MAJOR LEAGUE WRESTLING
MLW: GENESIS
FRIDAY NIGHT, FEBRUARY 22, 1996
FROM BODYSLAMMERS GYM IN LIMA, OH
MATCH #1
HANDICAP MATCH:
911 vs. THE HEARTHROBS (Sean Casey & Allan Funk). 911 picked up the win in the very first MLW match, at 3:19, after hitting a double Chokeslam on both men, then pinning them both simultaneously.
MATCH #2
EAST v. WEST:
YUJI NAGATA & NOBUHIKO TAKADA (representing Japan) vs. ROBBIE BROOKSIDE (British Champion) & JODY FLASH (representing Great Britain). The fans in attendance are treated to their first glimpse of the “hybrid” style of MLW, with Takada and Nagata utilizing a submission style, with plenty of MMA-inspired strikes and holds mixed in with traditional wrestling moves. Brookside and Flash give a good showing, but in the end, the Japanese team get the win when Takada pinned Flash at 9:32 after hitting him with a vicious kick, catching Flash right under the chin, and knocking the Brit out cold.
MATCH #3
ROOKIES MATCH, ASSISTANT TRAINER TITO SANTANA IS THE REFEREE:
THE BAD STREET BOYZ (Christian York & Joey Matthews) & SHANNON MOORE vs. ADAM PEARCE & REY DRAGON & DARKNESS DRAGON. Most of these trainees of Bodyslammers Gym are wrestling in their very first pro match here, but they show the fans that even now, they have potential, and could become superstars down the road. The standouts here are Adam Pearce and Shannon Moore, as they put on a clinic for the fans. The end comes when the Bad Street Boyz drop Darkness Dragon with a double dropkick, then Shannon Moore comes off the top rope with a Senton for the pinfall at 8:34.
MATCH #4:
HAYABUSA & PARKA GUERRERA vs. PHI DELTA SLAM. Everyone’s favourite frat boys hit the ring and go right after their smaller opponents. Big Tilly and Bruno enjoy the advantage in the early going, but the masked men eventually turn things around, with Hayabusa getting the pinfall on Big Tilly at 6:19 after connecting with the Phoenix Splash.
MATCH #5:
ROB VAN DAM vs. AKIRA NOGAMI. RVD and Nogami give the fans their money’s worth here, as they hit each other with one high impact move after another. In the end, it’s RVD coming away with the victory after a spinning heel kick, followed by the Frog Splash for the pinfall at 11:03.
MATCH #6:
CACTUS JACK vs. BALLS MAHONEY. These two hardcore stars tear into each other as soon as the bell sounds. The referee gives them plenty of leeway, as they brawl in and out of the ring. They even brawl out into the seats at one point, and take turns clobbering each other with chairs. As we pass the 10-minute mark, Cactus gains the upper hand, and after pummeling Mahoney, he drops him with the Double-Arm DDT for the pinfall at 12:00.
After the match, the two men shake hands, with Balls then raising Jack’s arm.
MATCH #7
3-WAY 60 MINUTE IRONMAN MATCH
FOR THE VACANT NWA WORLD LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP:
RECKLESS YOUTH vs. TIGER MASK IV vs. CHRISTOPHER DANIELS. The stipulations for this match are that the match continues for 60 minutes, and for every pinfall or submission that a wrestler gets, he’s awarded 2 points. If a wrestler is pinned, forced to submit, counted out or disqualified, he loses a point. After the 60 minutes are up, the wrestler with the most points will be awarded the NWA World Light Heavyweight Title.
The first fall doesn’t come until the 18-minute mark, when Tiger Mask IV drops Reckless Youth with a vicious Tiger Suplex. Tiger Mask gets the pinfall, and is awarded 2 points, while Youth goes to -1. The second fall happens at the 26-minute mark, this time Reckless Youth gets the decision, forcing Tiger Mask to submit to the Stretch Plum. This brings Reckless Youth to 1 point, while dropping Tiger Mask to 1 point as well, with Christopher Daniels still without a point. The third fall comes 52 minutes into the match, when Christopher Daniels pins Tiger Mask with the Angel’s Wings. With that, Daniels takes the lead, with 2 points, Youth with 1, and Tiger Mask with 1. The final fall of the match happens at 57:39 when Youth pins Tiger Mask after dropping the masked man with the Fisherman’s Buster. That’s the last fall before the 60 minute time limit runs out.
The final standings look like this: Reckless Youth with 3 points, Christopher Daniels with 2 points, and Tiger Mask IV with -1 point.
Reckless Youth is handed the NWA World Light Heavyweight belt and that does it for the first Major League Wrestling event!
