UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, February 26, 1985, San Diego, California
Airing: Friday, March 1, 1985, ESPN
Interviewer: Gene Okerlund
Announcers: Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage
Referee: Joey Marella
Ring Announcer: Joe Blancard
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring! We have a huge show for you this evening. On our program, you will see Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers in action, the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez will be in the ring, Junkyard Dog takes on Ron Bass, and in our main event the Bulldogs take on Buddy Rose and Doug Sommers. In addition, we have a very special presentation later in the show as famed wrestling journalist Bill Apter will be here to present an award to Magnum TA.
There are so many amazing happenings going on here in the Universal Wrestling Enterprise. We are just days removed from the big show in Los Angeles where Roddy Piper successfully defended his belt against Big John Studd, while Magnum TA and Jake Roberts engaged in another brutal war. We’ll hear reaction from the wrestlers who were part of that big card throughout the program. At this time, it is my pleasure to welcome the Commissioner of the UWE, Lord James Blears.
Lord James Blears: The Universal Wrestling Enterprise strives to put on the most entertaining, action-packed wrestling television program in the business. Every Friday night, we bring the best wrestling action in the world right to your living room. I am thrilled to announce that we have re-signed an agreement with ESPN that will allow us to continue to bring you great programming every Friday night. We are grateful for our partnership with ESPN and thank them for their support. I can also announce tonight, that on Friday, March 29, ESPN will broadcast a live, blockbuster card on this very time slot. This two hour live-show from Portland, Oregon will be called Prime Time Classic. This is a first of its kind event, a live wrestling card shown live nationwide. We will have an amazing card that evening, but I can announce tonight that Roddy Piper and Magnum TA will team up to take on Big John Studd and Jake Roberts in the main event.
Gene Okerlund: What an incredible announcement! A blockbuster wrestling card, broadcast LIVE to your home on March 29. Let’s welcome the world champion and hear what he has to say about this announcement.
-Roddy Piper arrives at the interview center---
Roddy Piper: Mean Gene, what a day for the Universal Wrestling Enterprise! There should have been no doubt that ESPN would want to keep us here. You have the hottest promotion the sport right here, and you have the most respected world champion in the business holding the belt. I’ve taken down Big John Studd, I’ve taken down Jake Roberts, and I’ve done it all on my own. No tag partners, no one helping. Just me jack, taking on anyone who wants to take this belt. I’m your world champion, the only world champion the UWE has ever had, don’t you forget it.
Gene Okerlund: Roddy Piper sounds as confident as ever. Lets head to ring as Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage have the call for our first match.
Match #1: Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers defeat Buddy Lane and Art Crews via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: The UWE front office continues to sign new wrestling talent to make sure we bring you the top action in the business. We have a number of new wrestlers debuting over the next few weeks, and I’m thrilled that our next guest is one of them. Please welcome one of the most rugged wrestlers in the business, hand of stone Ronnie Garvin.
Ronnie Garvin: Thank you Gene, and thank you to all the amazing fans watching out there in tv land. Word has spread quickly around the wrestling world, that the Universal Wrestling Enterprise is the place to be. This is where the best names in the sport compete, this is where you can truly find out who you are as a wrestler. I’ve fought all over the world, I’ve met some of the toughest competition there is. I’m ready to get down to work and fight for all you great fans. These hands of stone will always be used to fight for what’s right, to fight for you.
Gene Okerlund: Hands of Stone Ronnie Garvin has joined the UWE and he’s ready to make a name for himself in this promotion. We’ll see him in action next week. Let’s head to ring for our next contest as the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez is in action.
Match #2: Al Perez defeats Sal Bellomo via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: As I mentioned before, we have wrestlers from all the world that want to be a part of the Universal Wrestling Enterprise. And I do mean all over the world. We received this video tape from a man who will be debuting in the promotion soon. Let’s take a look.
Video: A voice with a thick Russian accent begins speaking while we see images of a man working out in a dimly lit warehouse, with ice on the walls and snow blowing around the floors. The narrator begins, “Your President says that Russians want to destroy your way of life. He says that we hate Americans and want to see your country destroyed. He says you must show strength because we will attack at the smallest sign of weakness. He says you should fear us because we’re evil…HE’S RIGHT”. Nikita Koloff comes rushing towards the camera. The narrator continues, “A nightmare is coming to America. A Russian Nightmare.”
Gene Okerlund: Someone call the CIA because we’re about to be invaded. The Russian Nightmare is headed to the UWE and people better be ready, because from the sound of it, he’s coming to cause nothing but destruction. Let’s go to the ring for our next match.
Match #3: Junkyard Dog defeats Ron Bass via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: As I mentioned at the top of the show, we are proud to be joined by wrestling journalist Bill Apter, who has a special award to present to our own Magnum TA. Let’s welcome Bill Apter and Magnum TA.
Bill Apter: Thank you for having me and thank you to all the great fans out in wrestling land for loving our sport. We asked our readers to vote on their favorite wrestling in the Universal Wrestling Enterprise. We had an overwhelming number of votes, and a majority of those went to Magnum TA. Congratulations Magnum on behalf of Pro Wrestling Illustrated and all the fans who voted. We have this plaque commemorating your accomplishment.
Magnum TA: Thank you Bill. I can’t tell you how much this means to me. Everything I do is for the wrestling fans…
---As Magnum is speaking, World Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper arrives at the interview center—
Roddy Piper: Hold on, hold on. Let me make sure I understand. I’m the heavyweight champion of the world, I’m the one who’s beaten every opponent they put in the ring win me. I take them all down. And the fans still chose someone else?!?
Magnum TA: Roddy, calm down man. I’ve teamed with you, I’ve heard the way the fans cheer you. You’re the face of this promotion. I know you deserve this award as much as I do.
-Magnum hands the award over the Piper. Piper knocks it out of his hand, sending the plaque to the floor.
Roddy Piper: Don’t ever try and give me charity man!
-Piper storms off, leaving a bewildered Apter and Magnum at the interview center.
Gene Okerlund: Fans, I’m not exactly sure what just happened here. We’ll try and get to the bottom of it. Let’s go to our main event.
Match #4: The Bulldogs defeated Buddy Rose and Doug Sommers via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Another impressive victory by the Bulldogs. We’re out of time, but we’ll get to the bottom of the situation between Piper and Magnum and have a complete report next week. Also, you’ll see some more top talent debut. Till next week wrestling fans!
