Reynolds and Montez welcome us to this week’s episode of “Outlaw Championship Wrestling”!
Reynolds starts off with a change to the previously announced card. He says that we’re scheduled to see the finals of the “Road to the Gold” tournament, between Paul Orndorff and Jay Youngblood, with the winner being crowned the first NAWF North American champion.
However, Jay Youngblood suffered an injury last night at the hands of the Dynamite Kid, and he hasn’t been cleared to wrestle here today.
This brings out Bobby Heenan and “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff.
Heenan says that suits him and Orndorff just fine, and says that means Gory Guerrero’s first act as the new NAWF Commissioner will be to come out here and award the North American title to Mr. Wonderful!
New Commissioner Gory Guerrero does indeed make his way out, but he says that he’s not going to just give the title to Orndorff. Instead, Orndorff will still have the opportunity to wrestle for the belt here today, just like he was scheduled to . . . but his opponent will be the Universal Hearthrob Austin Idol!
Heenan and Orndorff are livid! Heenan says that Idol wasn’t even entered in the tournament, and now Guerrero is putting him right into the final!?!?
Gory says that Idol’s impressive win-loss record since coming to the NAWF, as well as his ongoing issue with Orndorff, led the NAWF Championship Committee to determine that he would be a fitting replacement for Youngblood.
Heenan demands that Gory give the title to Orndorff, right here and now, and when Guerrero refuses, Heenan says that he’s going to contact his lawyers, and he and Orndorff storm off!
Gory says that Heenan can call his lawyers if he wishes, but the fact remains that our main event here tonight will be Paul Orndorff vs Austin Idol, and the winner will be crowned the NAWF North American champion!
Reynolds says Gory and the Championship Committee made the right decision, he feels that the belt should be won in the ring, not just awarded to someone.
THE MASKED SUPERSTAR (w/ Bobby Heenan) beats BRAD ARMSTRONG. Superstar gets the win over the talented youngster, connecting with a Corkscrew Neckbreaker before covering Armstrong for the 1, 2, 3.
DYNAMITE KID beats TOM ZENK. DK gets the pinfall victory after a snap suplex, followed by a diving headbutt from the top rope.
Reynolds and Montez talk about what took place last night in Pittsburgh, when the Youngblood brothers and the British Bruisers met in a match where the losing team would have to split up.
VTR: Youngbloods vs Bruisers, 2-15-85, JIP:
At one point, DK throws Jay out of the ring, then taunts Mark, which distracts the referee. While that’s going on, Rocco attacks Jay on the floor, lifting him up and dropping him throat-first across the steel guardrail! With Jay rolling around, clutching his throat, Rocco picks him up and rolls him back into the ring.
The next few minutes see the Brits continue to work over Jay, but despite the attack on the outside, and the beating that he’s getting from the Bruisers, Jay won’t stay down for a 3-count. DK and Rocco, frustrated that they can’t put Jay away, start double-teaming him again. They whip Youngblood into the ropes and go for a double clothesline, but Jay ducks it, then rebounds off the ropes, dropping both Bruisers with a double clothesline of his own. Jay then tags Mark in, and he clears both Brits from the ring.
A minute later, we’ve got all four men in the ring together. During the brawl, Mark comes off the top rope with a flying bodypress onto Rollerball Rocco for the 1, 2, 3!
The Youngbloods have won! The British Bruisers have to split up!
As Mark and Jay are getting their hands raised, DK and Rocco attack them from behind! They knock Jay out of the ring, then gang up on Mark. After laying Mark out, DK and Rocco jump out of the ring, and attack Jay on the floor. DK grabs a chair, and repeatedly drives it into the throat of Jay Youngblood!
DK and Rocco storm off, as medical personnel and Mark Youngblood check on Jay.
END VTR
Reynolds says that due to that attack on Jay Youngblood last night, he will not be competing against Paul Orndorff today, but as we saw earlier, NAWF Commissioner Gory Guerrero has announced that the Universal Hearthrob Austin Idol will take Youngblood’s place in the match today with Orndorff!
Reynolds and Montez are then joined at the broadcast desk by North American tag team champions The Fabulous Freebirds: Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy.
Hayes wants to know why the NAWF hasn’t given them any competition? He says that ever since they won these belts, none of the teams they’ve faced have given them a challenge, he says that they haven’t even broke a sweat in their title defences! He says he understands why the top teams would be afraid to get in the ring with them, but this is getting ridiculous!
All of a sudden, The Fantastics: Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers make their way out! Rogers says that they’ve been undefeated since coming to the NAWF, and they definitely aren’t afraid to get in the ring with the ‘Birds! So, if Hayes and Gordy want competition, why don’t they get in the ring with him and Fulton . . . right now!
Hayes tries to talk his way out of it, but when the Fantastics call him a chicken, he agrees to the match . . . but says the titles won’t be on the line, they’re not going to give the Fantastics a title match until they prove they’re deserving of one.
Reynolds says that it looks like we’ve got an impromptu tag team match, as the Freebirds and Fantastics head to the ring!
NON-TITLE MATCH:
THE FANTASTICS: BOBBY FULTON & TOMMY ROGERS defeat THE FABULOUS FREEBIRDS: MICHAEL HAYES & TERRY GORDY. The Fantastics give Hayes and Gordy their first serious challenge since they won the belts, as they take the fight right to the ‘Birds when the bell rings. Hayes and Gordy find themselves on the offensive for the first few minutes, until Gordy is able to turn the tables on Rogers, and the ‘Birds then isolate him in their corner. The Freebirds control the match for the next few minutes, working over Rogers in their corner, but when Rogers makes the hot tag to Fulton, he comes in and cleans house!
Fulton works over Michael Hayes for the next few minutes, but Terry Gordy comes in as Fulton runs the ropes, and then nearly turns Fulton inside out with a vicious lariat! This gives the advantage back to the Freebirds, and they keep Fulton in their corner, double-teaming him every chance they get.
It looks like the ‘Birds are on their way to victory, but Fulton somehow manages a comeback, ducking under a clothesline from Gordy, then connecting on a clothesline of his own. Fulton makes a mad dash for his corner, and tags in Rogers, who tears into Gordy. When Hayes comes in to help Gordy, Fulton comes back in, and they hit him with a double dropkick, sending Hayes tumbling through the ropes and to the floor. The Fantastics then hit a double dropkick on Gordy, followed by the Rocket Launcher, with Rogers then covering Gordy for the 1, 2, 3!
The Fantastics have defeated the Freebirds in an impromptu, non-title match!
Bobby Heenan and Paul Orndorff come back out. Reynolds asks Heenan if his lawyers had any luck in getting Orndorff out of his match with Idol, but Heenan just tells him to shut up!
Heenan complains that Idol has no business in this match, they had been preparing for Jay Youngblood, and if Youngblood can’t wrestle, then the only FAIR thing to do is just award the title to Orndorff.
Reynolds says that the fans want to see the title won in the ring, not just given to someone. Heenan says he doesn’t care what the humanoids want to see, all he cares about is that the NAWF does the right thing by him and Orndorff, and that means awarding Orndorff the North American title!
Reynolds says that whether Heenan and Orndorff like it or not, the match with Idol is set and if Orndorff wants the North American title, he’ll have to beat Idol.
Heenan says that he’s not worried about Orndorff beating Idol, he knows Orndorff could whip Idol no problem, that’s not the point, it’s the principle of it. If it were anyone other than a member of the Heenan Family, you can bet your bottom dollar that Gory Guerrero would hand over the belt, the only reason he’s refusing is because it’s Paul Orndorff. THAT’S why he and Orndorff are upset.
FOR THE VACANT NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP:
“MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Bobby Heenan) battles “THE UNIVERSAL HEARTHROB” AUSTIN IDOL to a DRAW when TV time runs out. Orndorff and Idol go tooth and nail for about 15 minutes before TV time runs out and the match is declared a draw.
Reynolds says that we’re out of time for today, but hopefully they’ll have some word next week as to the status of the North American title, since neither man got the win here today.
