Reynolds and Montez welcome us to Tucson, Arizona and the Tucson Community Center for this week’s episode of “Outlaw Championship Wrestling”!
This week we’ll see the footage from February 1, where Greg Valentine defeated Mil Mascaras to capture the IWA World heavyweight title, the first time in over a decade that title has changed hands!
Plus, we’ll see the first semi-final match in the “Road to the Gold” tournament for the North American title, as Rocky Johnson faces Abdullah the Butcher! Next week, we’ll see Paul Orndorff face Jay Youngblood in the other semi-final match.
Reynolds and Montez talk about a shocking encounter that took place on last week’s show.
VTR: Last Week On Outlaw Championship Wrestling:
After the clip airs, Reynolds and Montez are joined by Bruno Sammartino Jr. Sammartino complains about the way the match ended, to which Reynolds reminds him that HE brought the chair in the ring, and it was him trying to use the chair on Parisi that led to his losing. Sammartino claims that Parisi had been cheating, again, and that’s why he brought the chair into the ring, to fight fire with fire.
Suddenly, there’s some commotion . . . and out walks BRUNO SAMMARTINO SR!!!!!!
Junior is shocked to see his father, but then says that Senior must have saw the footage, he knows that what Junior is saying is true! He says that his father must realize by now that Parisi is a no-good cheat!
Bruno Sammartino Sr tells his son that he didn’t raise him to act like this, he doesn’t even recognize the man standing in front of him.
Junior is taken aback, then composes himself . . . and says that his father is just jealous, because his son is on his way to being more successful than he could have ever been! Junior says his father was a chump, because he let people like Tony Parisi and Dominic DeNucci hold him down. If he had kicked them to the curb, who knows what heights Bruno Sr could have reached!
Senior says that those men he mentioned are like family to him, to both of them, they’ve always treated Junior with respect, there’s no reason for him to be acting the way he is.
Junior loses his temper . . . and SLAPS HIS FATHER ACROSS THE FACE!!!!!
Bruno Jr then storms off, leaving Senior just shaking his head.
Senior tells Reynolds and Montez that he doesn’t know what’s got into his son, then walks off the set.
END VTR
Reynolds says that he never, in a million years, thought he would see a confrontation like that between Bruno Sammartino and his son, Bruno Jr!
Bruno Sammartino Sr comes out and joins Reynolds and Montez.
Senior says that he never thought he would find himself in a situation like this either. He says he didn’t raise Junior to act like this, and he doesn’t know what’s got into him.
Suddenly, Bruno Sammartino Jr storms out onto the set!
Junior says that he’s tired of living in his father’s shadow, he says that he’s twice the wrestler his father ever was, but everyone just thinks of him as Bruno Sammartino’s son, and nothing more.
Senior says that he’s acting like a spoiled brat. He says that he’s never doubted Junior’s talent or abilities, but he needs to go out and prove to everyone that he’s a talented wrestler, he can’t just say it and expect everyone to believe him.
Junior gets mad, saying that he’s through listening to Senior, he’s not going to take career advice from someone who’s peak was 20 years ago, but still clings to past glory, unable to realize that his time has passed!
Junior goes to slap his father again, like he did last week . . . but this time Senior catches his hand!
Bruno Sr says that he’s had enough of his son’s attitude, but Junior launches himself at Bruno and starts throwing rights and lefts!!!
Reynolds and Montez are momentarily speechless, watching Bruno Sammartino Jr hit his father with rights and lefts!
Bruno Sr fights back!! He nails Junior with a haymaker, and the two brawl all over the place before they’re finally separated.
Reynolds and Montez talk about the IWA World heavyweight title match that took place in Phoenix on February 1, and as promised last week, they have footage of the match to show the fans.
VTR: Mascaras vs Valentine, 2-1-85, JIP:
Almost 20 minutes of the match is shown, we come in in the early going, as Valentine has the advantage. Mascaras suffered an injury to his knee when he got involved in the previous match, and when we join the match, Valentine is focusing on that knee, looking to soften Mil up for the Figure-4 leglock.
When Valentine looks to apply the Figure-4, Mascaras is able to kick him off, sending Valentine crashing into the turnbuckles. Mascaras gets back to his feet, though visibly favouring the knee, he goes on the offensive, hitting Valentine with some brutal knife-edged chops in the corner. The Arizona fans are solidly behind the Mexican superstar, as he continues to work Valentine over.
As the match progresses, whenever Valentine gets himself into trouble, he goes back to the knee of Mascaras. Eventually, Mascaras suffers too much damage to the knee, and can’t fight Valentine off. Greg gets him in the middle of the ring, and slaps on the Figure-4 leglock!
Mascaras fights desperately to break the hold, but it’s no use, the pain is too great, and Mascaras gives up!
Greg Valentine jumps to his feet, celebrating, then grabs the IWA title belt from the ref, holding it over his head as the boos rain down.
END VTR
We then go to pre-recorded comments from the new IWA World champion, Greg Valentine, in the locker room after the title win.
Valentine gloats about the victory, saying that the idea is that the World champion is supposed to be the very best, the cream of the crop, and now, with his victory over Mascaras, that is finally true! He says that wrestlers all over the world will be lining up for a shot at this title, but when they get in the ring with him, the result will be the same . . . Valentine will leave the ring, still the heavyweight champion of the world!
Reynolds says that they’ve got some BIG news! Next Friday night, February 15, the NAWF will hold their final show at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, before moving, full-time, to Arizona.
On that card, one of the main events is a match that nobody in Pittsburgh ever thought they’d see . . . father and son go one on one as Bruno Sammartino Sr makes his return to Pittsburgh against Bruno Sammartino Jr!
Montez says that he can’t believe it, and the Pittsburgh fans will definitely want to be at the Civic Arena for that one!
Reynolds and Montez then talk about three other matches that have been signed for the February 15 card:
Rocky Johnson teams up with Austin Idol to face Bobby Heenan’s duo of Abdullah the Butcher and Paul Orndorff!
Mil Mascaras will face the man that he holds responsible for Mil losing the IWA World title, the Masked Superstar!
And, Mark and Jay Youngblood have asked for another match with the British Bruisers, with the stipulation that the losing team must split up!
Reynolds says that it’s going to be a night to remember!
“MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Bobby Heenan) beats BRAD ARMSTRONG. Orndorff is preparing for his tournament semi-final match against Jay Youngblood next week, but he might be overlooking Armstrong here, as the youngster gets the upper hand on Orndorff and gives him several anxious moments early on. Orndorff soon takes control of the match, though, and a few minutes later, he drops Armstrong on his head with the Piledriver for the 1, 2, 3!
ROAD TO THE GOLD TOURNAMENT
SEMI-FINAL MATCH:
“SOULMAN” ROCKY JOHNSON battles ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER (w/ Bobby Heenan) to a No-Contest. Things are pretty evenly-matched early on. Abby uses his usual tricks to gain an advantage, but Johnson holds his own, giving just as good as he gets. As we near the 10-minute mark, referee Danny Davis gets knocked to the mat after a collision with the Butcher.
With the referee down and out, the Masked Superstar hits the ring! Superstar helps Abby double-team Rocky, until Austin Idol arrives on the scene to even things up!
The referee slowly gets back to his feet, and after shaking off the cobwebs, only to see Rocky and Idol brawling with Abby and Superstar. Davis calls for the bell, and throws the match out, declaring it a No Contest!
Reynolds and Montez inform us that, due to the match being thrown out, BOTH men are eliminated from the tournament! That means that next week’s match, which was supposed to be the other semi-final match, will now be the final, meaning that either Paul Orndorff or Jay Youngblood will become the very first NAWF North American champion and the top contender to the IWA World heavyweight title!
Reynolds and Montez then wrap things up. They hype next week’s show, which as we just heard, will now feature the finals of the North American title tournament! Reynolds also reminds the fans around Pittsburgh to get their tickets for the final NAWF event in Pittsburgh, on February 15, where we’ll see father and son collide, as Bruno Sammartino Sr and Jr go one on one!
