ARIZONA VETERANS MEMORIAL COLISEUM in PHOENIX, ARIZONA
Ring announcer Larry Nelson welcomes us to the NAWF’s debut in the Southwest, here in Phoenix! He runs down the matches that we’ll be seeing tonight, including the big one, as Mil Mascaras defends the IWA World title against Greg Valentine!
TOM ZENK battles BRAD ARMSTRONG to a time-limit DRAW at 15:00. Zenk and Armstrong put on an exciting opening match, and show why many consider them future superstars. Neither man can put the other away before the 15-minute time limit expires, and the match is declared a draw. Armstrong and Zenk shake hands afterwards.
HARLEY RACE beats KOKO WARE. Koko gives a valiant effort, however, the grizzled veteran gives Koko a beating, and connects with the diving headbutt for the 1, 2, 3.
THE FANTASTICS: BOBBY FULTON & TOMMY ROGERS defeat BLACK GORDMAN & GREAT GOLIATH. Gordman and Goliath are well-known in the Southwest, and they give the Fantastics all they can handle. In the end, though, the Fantastics get the win when they hit Gordman with a double dropkick, and Rogers covers him for the pinfall.
THE BRITISH BRUISERS: DYNAMITE KID & MARC “ROLLERBALL” ROCCO defeat JAY & MARK YOUNGBLOOD. Rocco wears the remains of Jay’s ceremonial headdress to the ring, and that infuriates the Youngbloods! They don’t even wait for the bell, as they charge the ring and tear right into DK and Rocco! The first few minutes see referee Tommy Young trying desperately to get some order restored, but the wrestlers pay no attention to him, and all four men continue to brawl in the ring. Finally, the ref gets DK and Mark Youngblood out, leaving Jay and Rocco in the ring. Jay goes right after Rocco, pummeling him, then tags Mark in, and they double-team him, taking advantage of the 5-count to leave the ring. The Youngbloods quickly tag in and out, keeping the fresh man in, and keeping Rocco in their corner.
Eventually, Rocco tags Dynamite in, and he uses a series of vicious European uppercuts to put Jay Youngblood on the mat. From there, DK works Jay over, keeping him in the Bruisers’ corner. This goes on for several minutes, until Jay is able to make the hot tag, and Mark comes in and cleans house! Mark hits dropkicks on both DK and Rocco, sending them both through the ropes and to the floor.
As the match progresses, the Youngbloods have things well in hand and look to be on their way to victory. But, with Jay in the ring with DK, Rocco goes and picks up what’s left of Jay’s headdress, and starts pulling the remaining feathers out, then throws it on the floor and stomps on it!
Jay just watches in horror inside the ring, but before he can leave the ring to stop Rocco, Dynamite Kid rolls Jay up from behind. Jay is caught completely off-guard and can’t kick out! DK gets the 1, 2, 3, and the British Bruisers have picked up a victory here over the Youngbloods.
PHOENIX STREETFIGHT:
TONY “CANNONBALL” PARISI beats BRUNO SAMMARTINO JR.
Things have continued to escalate between former tag team partners Parisi and Sammartino, to the point where Parisi asked for this Phoenix Streetfight, an anything-goes, come as you are match, in the hopes that he can put an end to this rivalry. Earlier in the feud, Parisi was a relunctant participant, instead hoping that they could work through their differences, but since Junior used a foreign object to knock him out in a Lumberjack match last Friday night in Pittsburgh, Parisi has forgotten all about trying to sort things out peacefully.
Parisi tears into Bruno Jr to start things off, and Junior seems surprised by the level of aggression from Parisi, so he bails out of the ring and takes a moment to compose himself. Back inside, Parisi continues to dominate the match, but a low blow from Junior stops Tony in his tracks. From there, Sammartino takes over. Junior becomes more and more arrogant as he continues to pummel Parisi. At one point, with Tony on the mat, Junior just stands over him, and every time Parisi tries to get up, Bruno puts a boot against Tony’s head, and shoves him back down to the mat. The blatant disrespect from Junior angers Parisi even more, and he grabs Sammartino’s leg, dragging him to the mat, then he starts wailing away on Junior with a flurry of rights and lefts!
Sammartino manages to get away from Parisi, and rolls to the outside, but Parisi follows him out. Tony grabs Junior by the hair, but Bruno picks up a chair and drives it into Parisi’s stomach! Sammartino then tosses Parisi back into the ring, and follows him in, with the chair still in hand!
Sammartino batters Parisi with the chair, but when he covers Parisi, Tony is able to drape a leg over the bottom rope to stop the count. Frustrated, Sammartino pulls Parisi up, and whips him into the corner. Parisi is slumped against the turnbuckles, battered and bloodied, but when Sammartino goes to smash him again with the chair, Parisi ducks out of the way, and the chair rebounds off the top turnbuckle . . . right into Sammartino’s face! The impact from the chair knocks Sammartino senseless, and he falls to the mat.
Parisi, still dazed, falls on top of Sammartino, and referee Tommy Young makes the three-count! Tony Parisi has defeated Bruno Sammartino Jr in this Phoenix Streetfight!
ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER & PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeat “SOULMAN” ROCKY JOHNSON & “THE UNIVERSAL HEARTHROB” AUSTIN IDOL by DQ. We’re treated to a wild brawl here, as these two teams tear into each other as soon as the bell sounds. Heenan even gets involved in the fracas, taking a cheapshot at Rocky Johnson as Rocky’s back is turned, but this just makes the Soulman mad, and he drops Heenan with a right hand! Heenan goes down like he’s been shot, and rolls out of the ring. Heenan then spends the next few minutes sprawled out on the floor!
Inside the ring, Orndorff and Idol brawl in one corner, while Abby and Rocky battle in another. When Rocky had turned his attention to Heenan, Abby used the opportunity to attack him, and now Abby has Rocky in a bad way. Abby repeatedly chokes Rocky over the middle rope, then stomps him, and even BITES Rocky’s forehead at one point!
Idol and Orndorff take their fight to the floor, leaving Abby and Rocky alone in the ring. Rocky makes a comeback, stunning the Butcher with rights and lefts, until Abby rakes Johnson’s eyes, and then takes over again.
Outside, Idol has the upper hand, and whips Orndorff into the guardrail, then into the ringpost.
Inside the ring, Abby continues to pummel Rocky, but Johnson again fights back and turns the tide in his favour. When Rocky goes to slam Abby, one of the Butcher’s flailing legs connects with the referee, knocking him to the mat. Rocky momentarily turns his attention to the referee, allowing Abby to pull out his trusty fork! Abby repeatedly jabs Johnson in the head with the fork, opening up a cut over his eye.
However, Rocky kicks Abby in the gut, causing him to drop the fork. Johnson picks it up and starts jabbing Abdullah with it! Unfortunately for Rocky, the referee starts to stir, and as he gets to his feet, he sees Rocky using the fork on the Butcher, and calls for the bell!
The referee awards the match to Abby and Orndorff by DQ, due to Rocky using the foreign object. Johnson tries to explain to the ref that Abby had used it first, pointing to the cut on his head, but the referee didn’t see that.
At that point, Abby attacks Rocky from behind again, and takes possession of the fork again, and starts digging it into the cut on Rocky’s head!
Idol rolls Orndorff back into the ring, delivers a kneedrop, then goes to help Rocky fight off the Butcher.
But here comes the Masked Superstar! Superstar hits the ring, and pummels Idol, while Abby continues to use the fork on Rocky Johnson.
Suddenly, IWA World champion Mil Mascaras makes his way out! Mil had teamed up with Rocky and Idol last week in Pittsburgh to face the Heenan family, and he comes to their aid again here! Mascaras connects with dropkicks on Abby, the Superstar, and Orndorff, sending all three out of the ring.
When Mascaras goes to check on Johnson and Idol, the Masked Superstar slips back into the ring, and clips Mil’s knee! The World champion crumbles to the mat, and Superstar starts stomping away at the knee, until Rocky and Idol chase him off.
GREG VALENTINE (challenger) beats MIL MASCARAS (champion) to win the title. Mascaras comes to the ring favouring his knee after the attack at the end of the previous match, and Valentine targets the knee immediately! Despite the injury, Mascaras puts up a good fight, but Valentine is relentless, focusing on the knee, and in the end, he slaps on the Figure-4 Leglock for the submission victory!
After holding the title for almost a decade, Mil Mascaras has lost the IWA World heavyweight title!
