Announcers: Jack Reynolds, Dick the Bruiser and Tito Montez
Ring Announcer: Larry Nelson
Referees: Tommy Young, Jack Lotz and “Dangerous” Danny Davis
JACK REYNOLDS and “the world’s most dangerous wrestler” DICK THE BRUISER are standing at the announce podium, the NAWF logo behind them.
Reynolds and the Bruiser welcome us to the first episode of 1985, and with the new year comes some changes!
Reynolds says that the show is now available in the southwestern US, in cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Tucson, Santa Fe, Las Cruces and El Paso! For their Spanish-speaking friends in those areas, Rapido Rodriguez will be hosting a Spanish version of the show.
Reynolds says that at this time, he’d like to introduce the newest member of their announce team, a man that the fans in the Southwest know very well . . . Tito Montez!
Montez comes out and joins Reynolds and the Bruiser and says that he’s happy to be a part of the North American Wrestling Federation, and he’s excited to see professional wrestling back in the southwest!
Reynolds hypes tonight’s show, which will feature a huge tag team main event, a rematch from the finals of the Christmas night tournament, between new North American tag champs the Fabulous Freebirds, and the team they beat for the belts, Tony Parisi and Bruno Sammartino Jr!
Reynolds, Bruiser and Montez then talk about the big grudge match that took place on Christmas night between “Soulman” Rocky Johnson and Abdullah the Butcher.
VTR: Johnson vs Abby, 12/25/85, JIP:
Abby repeatedly jabs the taped thumb into Rocky’s throat, always making sure that the referee isn’t in a position to see it. Rocky rolls out to the floor, gasping for air, but the Butcher follows him out, and pulls out his trusty fork!
The two men brawl on the floor, with Abby jabbing Johnson in the head with the fork, and Rocky trying desperately to take the fork away from the Butcher. Finally he does, and he starts jabbing the Butcher in the head with the fork, much to the delight of the Pittsburgh fans, but neither man has paid any attention to the referee, who reaches the count of 10 and declares the match a double count-out!
Both men are bleeding before NAWF officials and security personnel are finally able to separate them.
END VTR
Reynolds says that nothing was settled, though as we saw, Rocky did get a measure of revenge, using Abby’s own fork to bloody the Butcher.
Bruiser says that Heenan’s other goon, the Masked Superstar, was in action on Christmas as well, against Dino Bravo.
VTR: Superstar vs Bravo, 12-25-84, JIP:
Heenan trips Bravo when he runs the ropes, and when Bravo turns his attention to Heenan, the Superstar has a chance to shake off the cobwebs, and drops Bravo with a vicious clothesline to the back of the neck. Bravo rolls around on the mat, clutching his neck, but the masked man pulls him up . . . and hits the corkscrew neckbreaker!
That’s all she wrote for Bravo, as the Superstar covers him for the 1, 2, 3.
The Superstar’s not done, though. After getting his hand raised, he repeatedly stomps Dino’s neck, and then hits a second corkscrew neckbreaker! A group of referees and other wrestlers rush to the ring to put a stop to the assault, and after clearing the Superstar and Heenan from the ring, Bravo is fitted with a neckbrace and taken from the ring on a stretcher.
END VTR
Reynolds says that this all leads up to next week’s main event, a match that could main event any arena in the country . . . Rocky Johnson and Dino Bravo face Abdullah the Butcher and the Masked Superstar!
Bruiser says those two teams met a few weeks ago on TV, but by the time the match started, we only saw about 5 minutes of it before the show ended. Reynolds says that, next week, Johnny Powers has told him the match will start much earlier in the show, so that we will, hopefully, be able to broadcast the entire match.
Montez says that he can’t believe it, a match of that quality airing on free TV! He says that he’s been in the ring with the Butcher, and he’s seen the other three men on TV, and says that these are four of the roughest, toughest men in the sport today!
MARK & JAY YOUNGBLOOD beat THE NIGHTMARES: KEN WAYNE & DANNY DAVIS. We’re treated to a wild, fast-paced match between these two teams. The Nightmares use the fact that the referee can’t tell them apart to their advantage, switching places several times throughout the match. Despite that, though, the Youngbloods eventually take control of the match, and Jay catches one of the Nightmares with a big Tomahawk chop off the top rope for the 1, 2, 3!
After the match, Jay and Mark stop by the announcer’s desk. Jay says that he and Mark feel they deserve a shot at the North American tag team titles, after Marc Rocco and the Dynamite Kid cost them their semi-final match against the Freebirds on Christmas night.
Reynolds says that he agrees 100%, and says that they’ve got footage from Christmas night, so the fans that weren’t able to be in Pittsburgh can see exactly what Jay is talking about.
The Youngbloods stick around the provide their thoughts on the clips as they air.
VTR: Youngbloods vs British Bruisers, 12-25-84, JIP:
Late in the match, it looks like the British team will be moving on, but when Rocco hits a crossbody block off the top rope on Mark, Youngblood uses Rocco’s own momentum to roll him over and into a pinning predicament for the 1, 2, 3!!
The Youngbloods pull out the win, but the Bruisers are none too happy about it, and they attack Mark and Jay as they’re getting their hands raised! DK and Rocco hit a pair of picture-perfect snap suplexes that leave Mark and Jay lying, then DK goes up top and connects with a diving headbutt on Jay, while Rocco pummels Mark!
Several referees are finally able to pull the Bruisers off their opponents, and force them to leave the ring before checking on the Youngbloods.
END VTR
Reynolds says that the Youngbloods advanced to face the Freebirds in the semi-finals, but we hadn’t seen the last of Dynamite Kid and Mark Rocco.
VTR: Freebirds vs Youngbloods, 12-25-84, JIP:
Poor Jay continues to take punishment from both Freebirds, but won’t stay down. When Hayes attempts to suplex Jay, he blocks it, and reverses it, dropping Hayes with a suplex instead. Jay then dives to his corner, tagging Mark, who comes in and immediately cleans house, sending both ‘Birds to the outside.
Hayes climbs back into the ring, and he and Mark continue the fight, but while that’s going on, the British Bruisers make their way down to ringside! DK and Rocco pull Jay off the ring apron, and pummel him on the floor, getting the attention of Mark.
That’s all the distraction Hayes needs, he spins Mark around, kicks him in the gut, and drops Mark on his head with a DDT! Hayes covers Youngblood, and three seconds later, the Freebirds are victorious and moving onto the finals!
Mark rolls out of the ring to help his brother, and the Youngbloods and Bruisers then brawl around ringside and eventually to the back, as the ‘Birds just watch from inside the ring.
END VTR
Mark says that Johnny Powers has already agreed to give them another match with the British Bruisers, so they can settle this thing once and for all, but they want a shot at the Freebirds and those titles as well, and they’ll prove to everyone that they deserve it.
“THE UNIVERSAL HEARTHROB” AUSTIN IDOL beats AL SNOW. The youngster from Ohio puts up a good fight, but in the end, the Universal Hearthrob gets the win by locking on the Las Vegas Leglock for the submission victory.
After the match, Austin Idol stops by the announcers desk to talk with Reynolds, Bruiser and Montez. Reynolds congratulates Idol on his victory, and says that, starting this week, the show is now airing in Idol’s hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Idol says he’s tickled pink that all his friends, family and fans back home in Vegas get to watch him wrestle each and every week, and says he can’t wait until he gets the chance to wrestle there live!
Suddenly, there’s some commotion, and Bobby Heenan and “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff make their way onto the set.
Orndorff admires himself in a small, hand-held mirror while Bobby Heenan picks up a microphone.
Heenan says that Idol comes out here and flaps his gums, trying to convince these humanoids that he’s something special. But Heenan says that all Idol is, is a cheap ripoff of the REAL Universal hearthrob, “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff!
Idol grabs the mic out of Heenan’s hand . . .
Idol: “Whoa, hold on a second, Jackson. Look at me, look at this sexy body, you think I’M the ripoff? These women out here, Heenan, and all around the country, they know who the real hearthrob is, and it’s Austin Idol darlin’! And another thing . . . “
Orndorff grabs the mic out of Idol’s hand.
Orndorff: “Let’s get something straight, I’m the greatest thing to ever hit this sport! Idol, I’ve got a better body than you, I’m smarter than you, and let’s face it, I’m a far better wrestler than you! Idol, I can’t blame you for wanting to be like me, honestly I can’t. Every man on the face of the planet wishes he was “Mr. Wonderful”. But Idol, it’s starting to get pathetic . . .”
Idol’s heard enough, and the Universal Hearthrob slugs Orndorff right in the mouth!
The two men brawl all around the announce area, until security and several referees get them separated. As Idol is dragged to the back, Orndorff screams at him, that he’ll be sorry for putting his hands on Mr. Wonderful!
Orndorff and Heenan then head to the ring for the next match.
“MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Bobby Heenan) beats NICK DECARLO. Orndorff is livid after what just took place, and he takes it out on poor Nick DeCarlo. Orndorff pounces on DeCarlo as soon as he gets into the ring, DeCarlo is still wearing his ring jacket, and Orndorff pounds him into the mat, then hoists DeCarlo up and drives him, head-first, into the mat with a brutal Piledriver. That’s all she wrote, and Orndorff gets the 1, 2, 3 in about 30 seconds!
Reynolds, Bruiser and Montez talk about a new tag team that’s on their way to the NAWF, Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers, known around the world as The Fantastics!
“SOULMAN” ROCKY JOHNSON beats SWEDE HANSON. Rocky has a tough match here with the rugged veteran Hanson, but in the end, Rocky catches him with a picture-perfect dropkick, then a big knock-out punch for the pinfall victory!
Reynolds, Bruiser and Montez are joined by the IWA World heavyweight champion Mil Mascaras. Mascaras shakes hands with all three men, with Reynolds saying that he has held that IWA World title since 1975, that’s unheard of, almost a decade as world champion!
Mil says that he’s been very fortunate to hold this prestigious title for as long as he has, but it hasn’t been easy, he’s defended it against the very best wrestlers all around the world.
Reynolds says that most recently, he defended the title on New Years Day in Los Angeles against former 7-time World heavyweight champion, and one of the toughest men in the sport, Harley Race!
Mascaras says that Harley is one of the toughest men he’s ever faced, and he believes that by beating him, he’s proven himself to be worthy of holding this title. Mil says that he will continue to defend the belt against the very best, and he looks forward to any opportunity that he gets to come out and wrestle in front of these great NAWF fans.
NORTH AMERICAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP:
THE FABULOUS FREEBIRDS: MICHAEL HAYES & TERRY GORDY beat TONY “CANNONBALL” PARISI & BRUNO SAMMARTINO JR. The challengers take the fight right to the Freebirds early in the match, and seem to be on their way to victory, but Michael Hayes has other ideas, as a thumb to the eye of Parisi turns the tables in the Freebirds favour. The next several minutes see Gordy and Hayes work Parisi over in their corner, keeping him cut off from Sammartino. Every time Parisi tries to make a comeback, he's double-teamed by the ‘Birds, and when Parisi is finally able to make the tag to Sammartino, Hayes distracts the referee so that he doesn't see the tag, and forces Sammartino back out!
As the ‘Birds continue to work over Parisi, we can see Sammartino getting more and more frustrated on the apron. Finally, Parisi makes it out of the Freebirds corner, and goes to make the tag . . . but Sammartino ignores him, hopping down off the apron and, shaking his head in disgust, walks down the aisle and back to the locker room!
Reynolds, Bruiser and Montez wrap things up. Reynolds can’t believe what we just witnessed! He knew that there has been some tension between Parisi and Sammartino, but he thought they’d worked it out! He says that we’ll try to get a word with Bruno Sammartino Jr next week, to get some clarity on what we just witnessed, and we’ll see a big tag team main event, as Rocky Johnson and Dino Bravo face Bobby Heenan’s duo of Abdullah the Butcher and the Masked Superstar.
