THE LAST BATTLE IN LA
September 2, 1984
The Forum
Inglewood, California
Before the match, Ray Parker Jr. came to ringside to sing the national anthem. Afterwards, the crowd chanted for him to sing his hit song “Who you gonna call – Ghostbusters”. To the crowd’s delight, Parker complied and sang a few verses to his hit song.
-Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita then came to the ringside as the ceremonial timekeepers. Before they could ring the bell to start the evening’s card, Playboy Buddy Rose and Doug Sommers ran to ringside. They grabbed the mic and insulted Macchio and Morita. They started to come towards the duo when Macchio got into his now famous pelican kick pose from Karate Kid. As Buddy Rose approached, Macchio laid him out with the kick made famous in the Karate Kid movies. The Sheepherders exited ringside quickly as the crowd applauded the popular duo. The bell was finally rung indicating it was time for the night’s matches to begin.
Match #1
Army of Darkness (Kevin Sullivan and Maha Singh) w/ Brett Sawyer defeated the Killer Bees when the newest member of the Army of Darkness, Sawyer, struck Brunzell out of the ref’s view, leaving him easy prey for a Sullivan golden spike and pinfall. (8:01)
Match #2
Junkyard Dog defeated Colonel Debeers in a brutal encounter when JYD wore down his opponent, eventually administering The Thump and quickly covering Debeers for the pin. (7:08) With the victory, Debeers has to spend a day as JYD’s “servant”. Debeers protested mightily to referee Joey Marella before being escorted to the back by security.
Match #3
Al Perez defeated Billy Jack Haynes when the Latin Heartthrob used a foreign object out of view of the ref, leaving a stunned Billy Jack easy-pickings for a helicopter spin and pinfall. (8:13)
Match #4
Jimmy Snuka and UWE Television Champion Adrian Adonis fought to a double-countout when Classy Freddie Blassie interfered in the match, leading to Snuka going to the ring apron to confront the bombastic manager. Adonis gave chase and the two men fought at ringside, ignoring the ref’s admonitions to return to the ring. (9:32)
Match #5
UWE World Tag-Team Champions Rock and Roll Express defeated the Wild Samoans w/ Captain Lou Albano when attempted interference by the Captain backfired. He accidentally struck Afa, which allowed Morton to tag Gibson, who came in and landed a series of dropkicks, followed by a flying press and pinfall. (10:24) The Rock and Roll Express retain the world tag-team championship.
---Intermission---
Match #6
Cowboy Ron Bass defeated Wildfire Tommy Rich via pinfall. (13:46) Rich was in control of the match when he accidentally threw Bass into referee Joey Marella. As Rich went to check on Marella, Bass grabbed his ever-present bullrope Bessy. He struck Rich with the bullrope, tossed it out of the ring, then shook the ref until he came to. With Bass now covering Rich, a groggy Marella made the three count. Bass celebrated his victory by attacking the prone Rich again until security intervened.
Match #7
Magnum TA defeated Greg Valentine by TKO when Valentine became unresponsive to TA’s sleeper hold. (26:53) As a result of the defeat, Greg Valentine has to leave the territory. This match was everything you’d expect from two wrestlers who despise each other. With there being a No-DQ stipulation in place, the battle took place outside of the ring as much as it did inside. Anything that wasn’t nailed to floor was picked up and used. Magnum suffered a gash on his head and looked to be in serious trouble. Valentine grabbed the timekeepers bell and attempted to strike TA. Magnum moved at the last second and Valentine instead struck the ring post. TA then quickly kicked Valentine in the gut and landed an atomic drop….on the floor! An exhausted Magnum then locked in a sleeper hold. Valentine flailed for a while but eventually his movement grew less and less. Joey Marella raised Valentine’s hand once. No movement. Twice. No movement. Three times……NO MOVEMENT. Marella called for the bell and Magnum was declared the winner. Thunderous applause rained down on a dog-tired Magnum as he slowly walked to back, knowing he had just vanquished his hated enemy.
---Second Intermission---
Main Event
UWE Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper defeated Jake Roberts via pinfall to retain the world championship. (16:49) Two more rivals looking to settle their long-simmering feud. They traded the momentum before Roberts gained the upper-hand. He landed a gut-buster on Piper then covered for the pin. Marella got to 2 ¾ second before Piper kicked out. Roberts was furious believing Marella had counted too slowly. He let Marella know of his displeasure. He then hit Piper with a knee lift. Instead of going to his DDT finishing move, he instead chose to argue with Marella some more. He then picked up Piper to deliver a DDT, but the extra time Roberts had spent arguing with Marella allowed Piper needed time to recover. Piper landed a series of elbow’s to the gut of Roberts, landed a number of jabs to his opponent’s face, then landed his own DDT! Piper quickly covered for the pin as he retained his heavyweight title!
