UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, August 21
Airing: Friday, August 24
San Diego, California
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have a special treat for your this evening as you will see a world title defense! That’s right, here on ESPN, the new tag-team champions of the world, the Rock and Roll Express, defend their belts against the Army of Darkness. On the program you will also Jimmy Snuka, Jake Roberts and Junkyard Dog in action, as well as hearing from many of our great stars.
We are just over a week away from one of the biggest shows in wrestling history, the Last Battle in LA. This huge card being held at the world famous Forum in the Los Angeles has some great matches already announced, including World Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper taking on Jake Roberts in a steel cage, Magnum TA and Greg Valentine meeting in a loser leave town match, the Rock and Roll Express defending their titles against their rivals the Wild Samoans, and bitter rivals Junkyard Dog and Colonel Debeers meeting in what is sure to be a wild encounter. I am proud to announce three more matches for this blockbuster card: Tommy Rich against Cowboy Ron Bass, Jimmy Snuka takes on Adrian Adonis, and Billy Jack Haynes will battle the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez. What a card this is turning out to be!
Last week, Tommy Rich was seconds away from winning the Hollywood Television Title until interference by Ron Bass cost him the match. He gets a chance for revenge at the Last Battle in LA. Joining us now is “Wildfire” Tommy Rich.
Tommy Rich: Thank you Gene, and thank you to all the great fans of the Universal Wrestling Enterprise. Last week, I had Adrian Adonis beat, I was about to win that title belt for all of you people watching on ESPN. Then ‘ol Ron Bass decided to get involved. He cost me the match. He and I have been through some wars in the past. Wars that I’ve won. He wants to come back for more? This next war is going to last about as long as that war in Granada. Like those ‘ol boys who thought they could stop the US troops, stop our finest men and women in uniform, they didn’t stand a chance. You Ron Bass, at the Last Battle in LA, you don’t stand a chance either.
Gene Okerlund: Tommy Rich is ready to take revenge on Ron Bass for costing him the television title! Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening as Jimmy Snuka is in action against Matt Bourne. Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage are on the call.
Match #1
Jimmy Snuka defeated Matt Bourne via pinfall.
An impressive victory by Jimmy Snuka. We are joined by the man he will be taking on at the Last Battle in LA, Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis and his manager Classy Freddie Blassie.
Freddie Blassie: Tommy Rich must have taken too many shots in the head if he thinks he almost beat my man here for the television championships. We had things in control and decided to let our buddy Ron Bass get in on the action. Jimmy Snuka must have drawn the short straw to be booked against the great Adrian Adonis. This man has not been dominating the UWE since he arrived and that sure ain’t gonna get changed by Jimmy Snuka. These pencil-neck geeks watching are going to see Snuka go down.
Adrian Adonis: Look here boy. This ain’t the beaches of some island. This is big-time professional wrestling. Your little act may win over some fans, but it don’t do nothing for me. I’ve seen your type before, flying around the ring thinking you own it. Here’s the truth: it’s my ring and when we step into it at the Last Battle of LA, you’re going to get a taste of this New York attitude.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: At the Last Battle in LA, either Magnum TA or Greg Valentine will be fighting his last match in the UWE. This is a feud that has raged on all year, and it comes to a dramatic conclusion in Los Angeles. Here to talk about the big match is Greg Valentine.
Greg Valentine: All you people out there need to get your cameras and take a picture of the television set when he comes out later tonight. Why? Because you won’t be seeing Magnum TA much longer. His career is in my hands at the Last Battle in LA. What that means is that his career is over at the Last Battle in LA. I’m going to get rid of that little pest, then focus my attention on winning the world heavyweight championship. There is no one in this promotion who can match up to me, who can stop me.
Gene Okerlund: Greg Valentine sounds confident as he heads into the Last Battle in LA. Let’s head to the ring as the man who will be challenging for the world heavyweight title on September 2, Jake Roberts, is in action.
Match #2
Jake Roberts destroys Kendall Windham, winning via pinfall, then drapes his snake over Windham’s prone body until security intervenes.
Gene Okerlund: Horrific acts by Jake Roberts who will be trapped inside a steel cage with Roddy Piper at the Last Battle in LA. Our next guest will be facing Billy Jack Haynes in a match that has the possibility to steal the show. Please welcome Al Perez.
Al Perez: Los Angeles, Hollywood, that’s the home of beautiful people. The home of people who look like me. There’s a reason that women flock to the arenas, that they tell their husbands they’re going out for a Mary Kay party, when they are really sneaking to get a chance to see the Latin Heartthrob in person. In Hollywood, among the stars and celebrities, I’m the one who rises to the top. Billy Jack Haynes, you're just someone who will be at the wrong place, at the wrong time. You’ll be the person standing in the way of all my admirers who came to see a real man. You’ll be the person laying on the ground defeated as the Hollywood press snaps their pictures and proclaims: The Latin Heartthrob takes Hollywood again!
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: We heard from Greg Valentine last segment, now it’s time to hear from the man who he will be facing at the Last Battle in LA, the popular Magnum TA!
Magnum TA: Greg Valentine, we’ve gone ‘round and ‘round since this promotion started. We’ve fought all over the country, in arenas big and small. You’ve got the better of me a few times but every single match has been a battle. All that comes to end on September 2. I know it’s going to be one of the most intense matches I’ve ever been a part of. I know you’ll be bringing everything you got. I also know it won’t be enough. I love the fans in this promotion, the people who cheer us on and watch us on tv. I’m doing this for them, and that extra inspiration is all I’ll need to send you packing for good.
Gene Okerlund: Magnum TA vows to rid the promotion of Greg Valentine for all the great fans of the UWE. The man in action in our next match has a huge contest at the Last Battle in LA as he takes on Colonel Debeers. Tonight though, he first has to get through Black Bart.
Match #3
Junkyard Dog defeats Black Bart via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Junkyard Dog is ready for the Festival of Champions! We are now joined by the toughest cowboy to come to town in a while, Ron Bass.
Ron Bass: Tommy Rich, you don’t know when to quit, do you boy. Don’t you remember those beatdowns I’ve given you over the years. Don’t you remember bleeding all over the arena floor? You say we’ve had wars in the past. I wouldn’t call it that. If you want to tell this fans the truth, let them know that I’ve pinned you, beat you, chased you out of promotions all across this country. The UWE, it will be just one more to add to the list of places where Tommy Rich has been beat.
---Commercial Break—
Gene Okerlund: Before our main event begins, in which World Tag-Team Champions the Rock and Roll Express are in action, we are joined by another world champion, Roddy Piper:
Roddy Piper: One week. We are one week away from the Snake’s title chances being put to rest once and for all. The Last Battle in LA means it’s the last time you get a shot at this title, Roberts. Every time we get in the ring, there’s always an excuse. The ref wasn’t on my side, the athletic commission wasn’t on my side. In Los Angeles, inside the steel cages, there’s no more excuses. You want this title Jake Roberts, try and take it. There will be no one but you and I, no one to blame your loss on. Inside that steel cage, the snake gets defanged.
Gene Okerlund: Roddy Piper is ready for his final confrontation with Jake Roberts. Let’s head to ring as the Rock and Roll Express have a tough title defense against the Army of Darkness.
Match #4
UWE World Tag-Team Champions Rock and Roll Express defeat the Army of Darkness when Robert Gibson pins Maha Singh.
Gene Oklerlund: A huge win for the Rock and Roll Express. Join us next week as we will get you ready for the Last Battle in LA. Till next time!
---Show Ends---
---Matches not taped for television---
Match #5
Killer Bees defeated Buddy Rose and Doug Sommers.
Match #6
Magnum TA and Tommy Rich fought Greg Valentine and Ron Bass to a double countout.
Match #7
UWE World Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper defeated Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis w/ Classy Freddie Blassie via DQ for outside interference. (*note: only Piper’s belt was on the line)
