UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, August 14
Airing: Friday, August 17
Las Vegas, Nevada
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have a huge show for your this evening as the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez takes on Ron Starr, the Killer Bees team with Jesse Barr to take on the Sheepherders, Greg Valentine meets Steve Simpson, and in our huge main event, Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis defends his belt against “Wildfire” Tommy Rich.
Fans, last Sunday night in Denver, the wrestling world witnesses one of the most intense nights of action the sport has ever seen. With a quarter of a million dollars on the line, the men in the ring gave it everything they had. In a grueling contest, after almost 60 minutes of wrestling, Magnum TA won the first ever Blockbuster Battle. His victory celebration was short-lived though as he was immediately attacked by his rival Greg Valentine who used the winning trophy to knock Magnum unconscious. That wasn’t all though, as in the world title match, there was quite a bit of controversy as the Colorado Athletic Commission stopped the contest and ordered the match to immediately come to a halt. Both men took quite a bit of damage, but neither man seemed ready to call it quits. And in the world tag-team championship bout, the Rock and Roll Express are the new tag-team champions of the world as they defeated the Wild Samoans by pinfall. We’ll hear from many of the contestants throughout the program.
Joining us now to sort out the chaos of last Sunday is the Commissioner of the UWE, Lord James Blears.
Lord James Blears: The UWE Board of Directors was in attendance in Denver and has reviewed the footage of the matches in subsequent days. There was no clear winner in the Roddy Piper/Jake Roberts match. The state athletic commission stepped in to stop the bout, something we did not agree with. Our remedy at this time is to order an immediate rematch between Mr. Piper and Mr. Roberts. This match will take place at the Last Battle in LA on September 2. One of the reasons the Colorado Athletic Commission stopped the match is because too much of the action took place on ring apron and in the aisle way. There was a concern for fan safety. To make sure that this does not happen again, we are ordering that the rematch will take place inside a steel cage to ensure that the men stay inside the wrestling ring.
In addition, because the Wild Samoans have an automatic rematch clause in their contract, they will challenge the Rock and Roll Express for the world titles at the Last Battle in LA.
Gene Okerlund: Huge news from Lord James Blears. The Last Battle in LA on September 2 will feature World Heavyweight Champion Jake Roberts against Roddy Piper in a steel cage, the Rock and Roll Express will defend their newly won titles against the Wild Samoans, in addition to the matches previously announced: Greg Valentine against Magnum TA in a loser leaves town match, and Colonel Debeers against Junkyard Dog. This will be a memorable night of wrestling!
We have a great night of wrestling for you this evening as well. Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening as Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage are on the call.
Match #1
Al Perez defeated Ron Starr via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: An impressive victory for the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez who also performed well in the Blockbuster Battle. On last week’s program, there was controversy in our main event as Brett Sawyer struck his partner Kendal Windham leading to a victory by the Army of Darkness. Joining us now is the Army of Darkness.
---Kevin Sullivan, Maha Singh…and Brett Sawyer arrive at the interview area. Sawyer has a different appearance, with his hair now dyed and face make-up.
Kevin Sullivan: When darkness takes over, you are powerless to stop its force. The weak learn to become the strong, the hunted learn to become the predator. Those how have lead the sheltered life find their eyes open in a way they never thought impossible. Brett Sawyer was timid, he was fragile. That was before he took the darkness into his heart. You will now see a vicious warrior who will fight for the powers of the underworld. Under the spell of the great beyond, and my mentorship, Brett Sawyer will help lead the Army of Darkness to domination.
---Commercial Break—-
Gene Okerlund: Last Sunday night in Denver, the Rock and Roll Express achieved their dream and won the UWE world tag-team championship. They can’t rest on their laurels though as they have teams lining up to try and take the belts from them. Let’s welcome the new tag-team champions of the world, the Rock and Roll Express.
Ricky Morton: I told you we’d do it, daddy! For all the fans out there in TV land, for all the people who come to the arenas and pay their hard earned money to cheer us on, this one is for you! The Wild Samoans and Captain Lou Albano, they ain’t nothing but a bunch of cheaters. It finally caught up to them. We beat them fair and square and now we have these world title belts. It’s like living a dream, Rock and Roll is here to stay!
Robert Gibson: The Wild Samoans may want these title belts back. It aint’ gonna happen. We worked hard, we trained hard, we studied hard, to put ourselves in the best position we could to win these title belts. We aren’t going to let all that hard work just go away. We plan on defending these belts against anyone who wants a shot. A warning though, you better bring all you got, because these title belts are staying around our waists for a long, long time. Take that to the bank, jack.
Gene Okerlund: A jubilant Rock and Roll Express vow to be fighting champions. Let’s head to the ring as Greg Valentine is in action.
Match #2
Greg Valentine defeated Steve Simpson via submission. After the match, Valentine would not release the figure-four on Simpson. Security was forced to intervene to save the South African’s career.
Gene Okerlund: Greg Valentine’s behavior is simply unacceptable. His goal was not to win that match but to injure his opponent. Joining us on the program is the man who will compete for the world heavyweight championship at the Last Battle in LA, please welcome Jake “the Snake” Roberts.
Jake Roberts: How much did you have to pay that state athletic commission to save you, Piper? Once again, I was having my way with you, once again, I was about the win the world title. And once again, you had friends come and help you. You are a fraud Piper. I’ve been saying this from the beginning, you are nothing but a movie set, propped up to look special, but there’s nothing backing it up. Inside the steel cage, in Los Angeles, the place where stars are made, your time as champion will finally be over, something that should have happened a long time ago.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Joining us now is a man who is a whole lot richer after the Blockbuster Battle. The winner of a quarter million dollars, Magnum TA.
Magnum TA: Thank you Gene, and thank you to all the great fans in the UWE. The Blockbuster Battle was one of the most intense matches I’ve ever been a part of. You put that much money on the line there is no way people weren’t going to give it their all. I fought hard and I was honored to come away as the winner. Don’t get me wrong, winning that money is very nice. But I’ve always been told to share the good fortune when things go your way. I was proud to make a sizeable donation to the Boys Club of America to ensure that kids across the country can get their chance at success too. There will be plenty of time to talk about Greg Valentine, and our huge showdown at the Last Battle in LA. But for tonight, let’s focus on the positive. I fought hard to win that Blockbuster Battle and I’m blessed to be able to share that money with others in need.
Gene Okerlund: Magnun TA has a heart of gold! You have to think it’s not too much longer before he adds some gold around his waist. First he has to get through a career-on-the-line match with Greg Valentine at the Last Battle in LA. Let’s head to the ring for our next match of the evening, a big six-man tag contest.
Match #3
Killer Bees and Jesse Barr defeat the Sheepherders via pinfall when Barr pins Lord Jonathan Boyd.
Gene Okerlund: A huge win for Jesse Barr and the Killer Bees. Our next guests are likely not going to be in a very good mood as they lost their world tag-team titles in Denver. Joining us now are Captain Lou Albano and the Wild Samoans.
Captain Lou Albano: Not in a very good mood? That doesn’t even begin to describe what’s going on. We were robbed of our belts in Denver. Anyone can see that these two monsters can’t be beat by those pretty boy rockers. It was a conspiracy against my men because they’re afraid of us, they’re scared of us, they don’t want these beasts holding their precious tag-team titles. Your reign will be short-lived, at the Last Battle in LA, those belts come right back to us.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Before our big main event, we are joined by the heavyweight champion of the world, Roddy Piper. While Denver may not have gone as planned, you and Jake Roberts meet against in a few weeks in LA, this time inside a steel cage.
Roddy Piper: Since we’re going back to Hollywood, maybe it’s time for Jake Roberts to start a new career as a screenwriter. He comes out here and tells crazy stories every week. He claims I paid off the athletic commission to keep my title? He was seconds from losing when the suits stepped in. When we meet again in LA, in the steel cage, there will be no outside interference, no outside forces to mess with the match. When you start working on that screen play about Roddy Piper and Jake Roberts, let me ruin the ending for you: Jake Roberts loses again.
Gene Okerlund: The Champ is quite confident as he prepares for his rematch Roberts. We have another champ in action in our main event as television champion Adrian Adonis takes on the man who has taken the promotion by storm, “Wildfire” Tommy Rich.
Match #4
Tommy Rich defeats Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis via disqualification when Ron Bass comes to ringside and attacks Rich. He continues to assault him until security intervenes.
Gene Okerlund: Ron Bass said a few weeks ago that he and Tommy Rich had a history. Tonight, that history boiled over. We’ll hear from both men next week and learn about more matches for the Last Battle in LA. Till next week wrestling fans.
---Show ends---
---Matches not taped for television---
Match #5
Junkyard Dog defeated Kevin Sullivan via disqualification.
Match #6
UWE World Tag-Team Champions Rock and Roll Express defeated Playboy Buddy Rose and Doug Sommers.
Match #7
UWE World Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper, Magnum TA and Jimmy Snuka defeated Colonel Debeers, Ron Bass and Jake Roberts when Magnum TA pinned Debeers.
