UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, August 7
Airing: Friday, August 10, ESPN
El Paso, Texas
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have a great show for you this evening as you will see the world heavyweight champion in action. Also on the card, the Sheepherders meet Cowboy Scott Casey and Steve Simpson, Billy Jack Haynes is in action against Jonathan Boyd, and our main event, the Rising Stars meet the Army of Darkness.
This Sunday night is the biggest battle royal the wrestling world has ever seen. At McNichols Arena in Denver, Colorado, wrestlers from all over the world will compete in the Blockbuster Battle, a two-ring showdown where the winner received $250,000. As if that wasn’t enough, the card will also feature a heavyweight championship match as Roddy Piper defends against Jake Roberts and a tag-team championship match as the Rock and Roll Express try to take the titles from the Wild Samoans. If you are anywhere near Denver, Colorado this evening you need to make plans to get to McNichols this Sunday night.
Our first guest will be hoping for a Rocky Mountain High on Sunday night as he looks to become the world heavyweight champion. Please welcome Jake “the Snake” Roberts”.
Snake, you and Roddy Piper have had quite a battle raging this Summer. Do you hope to put that war to end on Sunday night in Denver?
Jake Roberts: Does a snake hope to take down its unsuspecting prey? Does a predator hope to go into the night hoping to take down his opponent? There is no hope involved. There is planning, there is skill, there is the unquenching desire to take what is yours. That title belt around your waist Roddy Piper, that belt is mine. You have convinced the fans, you have convinced the wrestling world, that you are an actual champion. You have not convinced me. All your pretending, all your fantasy, that is all going to come crashing down on Sunday night. You need to learn something about nature, the prey, it doesn’t outsmart the predator.
Greg Okerlund: Jake Roberts is determined to take the title belt off of Roddy Piper in Denver on Sunday night. Let’s head to the ring as you are in for a huge treat wrestling fans. We will see the world heavyweight champion in action in a non-title bout. Rod Trongard and Dutch Savege provide commentary as we go our first match.
Match #1
World Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper defeats Buzz Tyler (FA) via pinfall in a non-title bout.
Greg Okerlund: The world champ looks in prime form as he readies for this battle with Jake Roberts this Sunday. Joining us now fresh off his victory is Roddy Piper.
Roddy Piper: Jake Roberts, you think you’re some kind of predator, some of kind reptile that attacks people from behind. In Denver, jack, there won’t be no attacking from behind. There will be you and I, face to face in that ring. When there’s no sneak attacks, no element of surprise, snakes aren’t so bad, are they. You’ve wanted this world title for a long time, Sorry pal, it ain’t going anywhere. In Denver, the Snake gets crushed once and for all.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: In addition to the huge Blockbuster Battle, our next guests will be challenging for the world tag-team titles. Joining us now are the Rock and Roll Express, Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson.
Ricky Morton: Look here, this Sunday night, those world tag-team titles come home. The Wild Samoans, their cheat of a manager Captain Lou Albano, you’ve had your time. Now it’s time for Rock and Roll. The spirit of the fans, that rock and roll attitude, it flows through us. When the Rock and Roll gets going Sunday night, there ain’t nothing you can do to stop it.
Robert Gibson: The UWE has the greatest wrestling fans in the world. We promised we’d win those title belts for you all. We don’t break our promised. Wild Samoans, you’re mean, you’re tough, but come Sunday night, your time as world champions is over. For the great fans out watching on ESPN, for those who will be in the arena in Denver on Sunday night, we’re winning those titles for you.
Gene Okerlund: The Rock and Roll Express are confident as they head into their title showdown on Sunday. The tag-team in our next match will both be competing in the Blockbuster Battle on Sunday night, and they hope to get back into the tag-team title picture after that. Let’s head to the ring as the Sheepherders are in action against Cowboy Scott Casey and Steve Simpson.
Match #2
The Sheepherders w/ Jonathan Boyd defeat Cowboy Scott Casey and Steve Simpson via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: An impressive victory for the Sheepherders. We heard earlier from the Rock and Roll Express, their opponents on Sunday night join us now. Please welcome the world tag-team champions the Wild Samoans and their manager Captain Lou Albano.
Captain Lou Albano: Those pretty boys come out here each and every week, talking about how they are going to be beat these monsters. Let me tell you a secret, jack. This promotion may be based out of Hollywood, but this ain’t no Hollywood movie. The pretty boys don’t win in the end. This is real life. These beasts behind me, they don’t get beat in the closing. They keep their titles and make you pay for thinking you can challenge them. In Denver on Sunday, we end the challenge from those pretty boys once and for all, we turn McNichols Arena into the biggest horror show the Rock and Roll Express has ever seen.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: With $250,000 on the line this Sunday night in the Blockbuster Battle, wrestlers from all over the world will be bringing their A-game. Many experts have stated that our next guest is one of the favorites to bring home the big money payday. Let’s welcome “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka.
Jimmy Snuka: Thank you Mean Gene and thank you to the all the great fans here in the UWE. The Blockbuster Battle, $250,000 on the line. That’s life-changing money, brother. That’s the kind of money that can set up your family, make a lot of dreams come true. That’s why the men in that ring are going to be giving it all they have. I know the intensity will be high, but that’s what I thrive. I’ve been in big-time battle before, and I’ve come out on top. This Sunday night, when I stare across those two-rings and see dozens of men in front of me. I’ll know they all want to take what’s mine, and they will soon pay the price for stepping in my way.
Gene Okerlund: Jimmy Snuka with a big reminder that the Blockbuster Battle is every man for himself. There are no friendships, no allies, just competitors trying to bring home a quarter of a million dollars. In our next match, neither of these men would ever be called friends or allies. It’s Billy Jack Haynes in action against Al Perez.
Match #3
Al Perez and Billy Jack Haynes fight to a double-countout when the contests heads to the ring floor.
Gene Okerlund: Last week on this program, Junkyard Dog issued a challenge to Colonel Debeers for a match at the Last Battle in LA on September 2. The stipulation for the match: the loser of the match as to serve at the winner’s valet for a day. Joining us now is Colonel Debeers.
You’ve heard the challenge made by Junkyard Dog last week on this program. Wrestling fans are anxious to hear whether you’ll accept his challenge.
Colonel Debeers: Do you have another imbecilic question to ask me Okerlund? Do I accept his challenge? Of course I accept. You need to know something about my people, we don’t back down from a challenge, we aren’t afraid of people like Junkyard Dog. I’ve always said that Junkyard Dog and his people need to learn their place in our society. When I win our match at the Last Battle in LA, Junkyard Dog will get to be put in a role he is all too familiar with. You see, we don’t serve him, his people serve us. Challenge accepted.

The fight for that money will be like nothing you’ve ever seen. Then we move to Los Angeles for the card they are calling the Last Battle in LA. It’s being called that because it’s the last time you’ll see Greg Valentine. The Universal Wrestling Enterprise is the most prestigious promotion in all of wrestling. Everyone wants to be here. Why then would I put my career on the line and be part of a loser-leave-town match? Because Greg Valentine needs to go, and he needs to go now. The thing with a war, there’s a winner and a loser. At the Last Battle in LA, you’re going to lose the war and you’re going to lose your place in this promotion.
Gene Okerlund: Magnum TA is ready for the big events upcoming. Let’s head to the ring for our main event. The Army of Darkness seems to have been in Brett Sawyer’s head lately. Let’s see if it affects their match.
