UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, July 31
Airing: Friday, August 3, ESPN
Tacoma, Washington
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have a huge show for you this evening. “Wildfire” Tommy Rich makes his wrestling debut on the program against Black Bart, the Killer Bees will meet the Army of Darkness, Lord Jonathan Boyd takes on the Cowboy Scott Casey, and in our huge main event, Jake Roberts returns from his suspension to face Tito Santana.
We are just a little over a week away from the third Festival of Champions in Denver, Colorado at McNichols Arena on August 12. At this huge event, superstars from all over the world will compete in the Blockbuster Battle for a chance to win $250,000. In addition, fans will be treated to two world title matches, as Roddy Piper defends his belt against Jake Roberts while the Wild Samoans take on the Rock and Roll Express. If you live anywhere in the Rocky Mountain Region, makes plans to be in Denver next Sunday night for a night of wrestling action you won’t want to miss.
Joining us now to talk about the huge happenings in the UWE is Lord James Blears.
Lord James Blears: Next weekend, the wrestling world will see the most lucrative match in the history of our sport. A quarter of a million dollars is on the line for the winner of the inaugural Blockbuster Battle. That amount of money can change a person’s life. You will see the most intense, hard-fought match the sport has ever seen as wrestlers battle to take home this unprecedented prize. There will be two rings, and a wrestler will be eliminated if he is thrown over the top rope and his feet hit the ground.
There is another issue I need to address during my time this week. Last week, Magnum TA came on this program and asked for a winner-take-all match against Greg Valentine. These two have been involved in a brutal feud that has lasted for months. They have wreaked havoc all over the country and a number of jurisdictions won’t even sanction their matches any longer because of the brutality. This has to come to an end. On September 2, at the final Festival of Champions in Los Angeles, Magnum TA will face Greg Valentine in a loser-leave-town match. No disqualification, there must be a winner. This will truly be the Last Battle in LA for these two warriors.
Greg Okerlund: I can’t believe it! September 2, at the Last Battle in LA, Magnum TA and Greg Valentine will settle things once and for all. Will the Forum in LA be able to contain the culmination of this intense feud?! Let’s join Rod Trongaard and Dutch Savage for our first match of the evening.
Match #1
“Wildfire” Tommy Rich defeats Black Bart via pinfall.
Greg Okerlund: A successful debut for Tommy Rich who is sure to be in contention for a championship belt soon. Our next is another star who has his sights set on gold. Please welcome Billy Jack Haynes.
Billy Jack Haynes: Adrian Adonis, you’ve been running from me for too long, boy. The television title is suppose to be defended on this program and it is a disgrace that the belt is around your waist. The fans deserve a champion they can be proud of, someone they can look up to. That ain’t you Adonis. I will give the fans the kind of champion they deserve, and Freddie Blassie, you and your cane better stay out of my way. Lord James Blears, set the match, give the fans a real champion!
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: There’s a reason they are called the Rising Stars, they are one of the hottest young teams in all of wrestling. Please welcome Brett Sawyer and Kendall Windham.
Kendall Windham: Thank you Gene, it’s great to be out here in front of this national television audience. Both Brett and I grew up in the wrestling business. We know what it takes to be successful in the sport and how much work and determination goes into it. We’ve lost a few matches lately but we’re learning every single time we step in the ring. We’re building on the lessons learned from experience. Don’t count us out because we’re young, stay with us for the rise.
Brett Sawyer: Taking your lumps in this business is tough. Sometimes it makes you want to take the easy way out, to cut a corner or two. But we’re in this for the long haul. We’ve trained too hard, spent too much time in the gym. We will make a name for ourselves in this promotion and across the wrestling world. The Rising Stars are just getting started.
Gene Okerlund: Sounds like the learning curve is getting to the Rising Stars, but they vow to continue moving forward. Let’s go to the ring for our next contest, an exciting tag-team match between the Killer Bees and the Army of Darkness.
Match #2
Killer Bees defeats the Army of Darkness via disqualification. During the match, the camera catches Brett Sawyer in the audience watching the Army of Darkness and their odd rituals before the match.
Gene Okerlund: Both of these tag teams look intent on getting back in the title picture. Our next guest was challenged by Billy Jack Haynes earlier in the program. Please welcome the Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis and his manager, Classy Freddie Blassie:
Freddy Blassie: Why do you all let that pencil-necked geek Billy Jack Haynes come out there and run his mouth? No one wants to hear what that wannabe has to say. I heard Billy Jack had to repeat Kindergarten…three times. I’m going to say this nice and slow so even you’ll understand Billy Jack: you are never going to defeat this man. Ever. Hollywood is well-represented by having Adrian Adonis as the television champion.
Adrian Adonis: Billy Jack, you’re from Portland, or Seattle, one of those places no one cares about. You know what they do care about: New York City, jack. The greatest city in the world that has now produced the greatest wrestler in the world. Hollywood may have the bright lights and the stars, but this New Yorker has the title belt, and there ain’t one think youse can do it about it.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Out next guess was the big winner over Colonel Debeers at the Festival in Portland. But last week on this program, the Colonel let the wrestling world know the war is far from over. Joining us now is the Junkyard Dog.
Junkyard Dog: How many times do you need to get whooped, Debeers? At the Festival, with the dog collars around our necks, I beat you like the dirty mule you are. I thought you’d be running back to South Africa by now. But here you are, ready for another whooping. You need to know something, the beating you got, it’s only going to get worse, and worse. I have an offer for you Debeers, at the Last Battle in LA, let’s go at it one more time, but this time with consequences: loser has to be the winner’s servant for the day. You think you’re superior to me, prove it in the ring.
Gene Okerlund: Quite the offer from Junkyard Dog! We’ll hear from Colonel Debeers next to hear whether he’s accepting JYD’s offer. Let get to the ring as Lord Jonathan Boyd takes on the popular cowboy Scott Casey.
Match #3
Scott Casey defeats Lord Jonathan Boyd when the Sheepherders rush the ring and attack Casey. This results in the Killer Bees and Jesse Barr running to make the save.
Gene Okerlund: The viciousness of the Sheepherders knows no bounds as they three-on-one attack Scott Casey. Thank goodness for the Killer Bees and Jesse Barr. Our next guest was informed earlier tonight that his match against Magnum TA at the Last Battle in LA is a Loser-Leave-Town match. Let’s see what Greg Valentine has to say about this development.
Greg Valentine: Magnum TA, once we get to Los Angeles, that TA is going to stand for “taken away”. Taken away from the UWE, taken away from ESPN, taken away from Hollywood. It’s obvious there isn’t room for both of us in the this promotion, and I can promise you I ain’t the one who is going to be leaving. All you high-pitched, pimple faced fans who scream Magnum’s name in the arenas, you better take a long look at your hero. You better ask your parents to go down to the store and get a new VHS tape and teach you how to press record. Because that tape, those memories, that’s all you’re going to have to remember Magnum TA by after I’m done with him in Los Angeles.
----Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Before we start our main event, it is my pleasure to welcome the heavyweight champion of the world, Rowdy Roddy Piper.
Roddy Piper: There’s a lot of talk tonight about Los Angeles, but the real action is going to take place next Sunday night in Denver, Colorado. While a bunch of wrestlers are going to be fighting in a two-ring, spectacle for a quarter million dollars, I’m going to be fighting for something even bigger: Jake Robert’s soul. The Snake has built his reputation on intimidation, on psychology, on getting in peoples’ heads. But you know the best way to get in someone’s head, you pin their shoulders to the ground 1…2…3. The Jake Roberts you know will seize to exist, but rather, in his place will be nothing but some leftover snake skin. Denver, Colorado, next Sunday night, you are about to be Snake-free
Gene Okerlund: Big words from the world champion! Jake Roberts likely won’t take too kindly to those comments. Let’s head to the ring and see the Snake in action.
Match #4
Jake Roberts defeated Tito Santana via pinfall then draped his snake Damien over Santana’s body.
Gene Okerlund: Jake Roberts shows yet again why he is the #1 contender to Roddy Piper’s world heavyweight championship. Be sure to join us next week as the Rising Stars will meet the Army of Darkness and heavyweight champion Roddy Piper will be in action. Till next week wrestling fans!
---End of Show---
---Matches not taped for television---
Match #5
Al Perez defeated Jesse Barr via pinfall.
Match #6
Magnum TA defeated Cowboy Ron Bass via pinfall.
Match #7
Roddy Piper and Junkyard Dog fought Colonel Debeers and Adrian Adonis to a double DQ.
