UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, July 24
Airing: Friday, July 27, ESPN
Sacramento, California
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have a huge card for you this evening as Billy Jack Haynes takes on Matt Bourne, the Wild Samoans meet Steve Simpson and Scott Casey, Playboy Buddy Rose and Doug Sommers face the Rising Stars Kendall Windham and Brett Sawyer, and in the main event, Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis defends his belt against Junkyard Dog.
We are just weeks away from the Blockbuster Battle in Denver, Colorado on August 12 at McNichols Arena. This massive two-ring, battle royal will see the winner earn a quarter million dollars. Wrestlers from all over the world are clamoring to be a part of this historic event. We will see one of these wrestlers make his debut on the program later tonight. Also, we have received confirmation from the UWE Board of Directors that there will also be two title matches this night, Jake Roberts will return from suspension to challenge world champion Roddy Piper, and the popular Rock and Roll Express will meet the tag-team champion Wild Samoans.
Returning to the program after his tough loss against Greg Valentine at the Festival of Champions in Portland is Magnum TA. Magnum, we know you still have your sights set on Greg Valentine, but the Blockbuster Battle is just around the corner. Where is your attention?
Magnum TA: My attention is right where it always is, Gene, with the fans. I let you all down at the Festival of Champions. I let that punk Greg Valentine get the better of me and for that I apologize. I make this promise to you: that’s the last time Valentine will beat me. Ever. I beat him at the first Festival of Champions, he got me at the second. Let’s settle this once and for all. At the final Festival of Champions, on September 2 in Los Angeles, you and me one more time. This time for all the marbles. Winner take all. The person who get his hand raised that night in LA, that person ends the loser’s career. You man enough to meet me again Valentine?
Gene Okerlund: Magnum TA issues a winner take all challenge to Greg Valentine for September 2 in Los Angeles at the final Festival of Champions card! We’ll hear a response from Greg Valentine next week. Let’s head to Rod Trongaard and Dutch Savage for our first match of the evening.
Match #1
Billy Jack Haynes defeats Matt Bourne via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: An impressive win for Portland’s own Billy Jack Haynes. A UWE star who has been making a name for himself recently is the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez. He had a big win against Tito Santana at the Festival in Portland and hopes to keep his streak going.
Al Perez: There’s no “hope”, brother. I know I’ll keep the streak going. They put that wanna-be Tito Santana against me in Portland and I sent him packing back to Tijuana or wherever he’s from. The wrestling fans around the nation are finally realizing that I am the best looking, most talented, wrestler in the sport today. The women scream my name, they send me pictures begging me to take them away from their miserable lives and fat, slob husbands. Don’t worry sweethearts, you’ll get your escape, every Friday night you get a chance to most chiseled body in all of wrestling. And if you’re lucky, real lucky, we may come to your town and you get to see this in person.

Gene Okerlund: As I mentioned during our opening segment, we have new stars coming into the UWE every week. We are proud to welcome one of these new stars tonight. He’s a former world champion, a man who has won titles all over the country, and someone who has been involved in legendary matches. Please welcome to the program “Wildfire” Tommy Rich!
Tommy Rich: Thank you Gene and thank you to fans for the warm welcome. News is spreading all over the world that the best action in professional wrestling is right here in the UWE. From top to bottom, the competition can’t be match. Some wrestlers shy away from the competition, afraid they won’t be up for the challenge. Not me, daddy. I’ve fought the toughest men in the sport and I’ve beat the toughest men in the sport. I’m ready to prove myself here in the UWE in front of the greatest fans our industry has ever seen. You all are put on notice: Wildfire is running through the UWE!
Gene Okerlund: Tommy “Wildfire” Rich is in the UWE! We’ll see him in action next week. Let’s head to the ring as the world tag-team champions the Wild Samoans meet Cowboy Scott Casey and Steve Simpson.
Match #2
UWE World Tag-Team Champions the Wild Samoans w/ Captain Lou Albano defeat Scott Casey and Steve Simpson in a non-title bout.
Gene Okerlund: Another impressive victory for the Wild Samoans who have an impending battle with the Rock and Roll Express in Denver on August 12. Joining us now is the man they call the Outlaw, the toughest cowboy you’ll ever meet, Ron Bass.
Ron Bass: I ain’t just the toughest cowboy you’ve ever seen, I’m the toughest man you’ve ever seen. I see the UWE is letting anyone step into the ring these days. I know Tommy Rich and I’ve whooped him before. He thinks he can come into this promotion and get a fresh start? The only difference is I’ll be beating the tar out of him on national TV this time. I beg the UWE Board of Directors to give me five minutes in the ring with Tommy Rich. When you do, Rich’s stay in the UWE is going to a short one.
---Commercial Break----
Gene Okerlund: In our last segment we heard that Ron Bass and Tommy Rich may have some unfinished business. Our next guests always manage to leave us a little bewildered when they come on the program. Please welcome the Army of Darkness, Kevin Sullivan and Maha Singh.
Kevin Sullivan: The fire from the underworld is bright and ready to engulf the land that you call home. We are lead by a spirit that guides us on a different path, a path of mayhem and destruction. When you join with us, the weak-minded become the strong, the frail become the resilient. We have the power of millions of fallen angels by our side. Those who are wandering, this is your invitation, the spirits have guided us and we have our next target who will be coming home.
Gene Okerlund: Interesting comments from Kevin Sullivan as he claims to have a new member joining them soon. In action in our next contest is the team of Playboy Buddy Rose and Doug Sommers.
Match #3
Playboy Buddy Rose and Doug Sommers defeat Kendall Windham and Brett Sawyer via pinfall. After the match, Brett Sawyer is particularly despondent and argues with Windham.
Gene Okerlund: An impressive win for the team of Rose and Sommers. We are now joined by the man who will be challenging for the world title on August 12 in Denver, Jake Roberts.
Jake Roberts: When we get to Denver you are going to pray to the Lord James Blears himself that they put me back on suspension. If I get you in the ring in the Mile High City there will be no mercy shown. You have run from me, you have hid from me, you have cheated me out of the title that is rightfully mine. In Denver, the paper champion, the cardboard cutout of a champion known as Roddy Piper, is going down. The end of my suspension will mean the end of your title reign Roddy Piper.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Before we get to our main event, we are joined by the heavyweight champion of the world, Roddy Piper. Champ, you will be defending your title against Jake Roberts again at the next Festival of Champions in Denver.
Roddy Piper: You got that right, Mean Gene. Another title defense, another battle against Jake Roberts. Here’s the thing about Snakes. They like to slither around, they like to sneak up on people. There will be no more sneak attacks Jake Roberts. You and I will in the ring, there will be no hole to slither away to, there will just be your day of reckoning. I’m getting tired of your insults, of you running your mouth over and over. Claiming I’m not a real champ. Look here pal, this the heavyweight championship of the world, the most prestigious belt in the business. It’s around my waist, jack. And you can come out here and throw all the insults you want, but after we meet in Denver, it will still be around my waist.
Gene Okerlund: The world champion is ready for his big title defense as the Festival of Champions in Denver. Let’s head to the ring for our main event.
Match #4
Junkyard Dog defeats Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis w/ Classy Freddie Blassie by disqualification for outside interference when the Classy One uses his cane on Junkyard Dog. After the match, Colonel DeBeers comes to ringside and a brawl with JDY ensues.
Gene Okerlund: The feud between JYD and Colonel Debeers appears to be far from over. Join us next week as “Wildfire” Tommy Rich will make his in-ring debut and Jake Roberts will be in action against Tito Santana. Till next time wresting fans.
