UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, July 10
Airing: Friday, July 13, ESPN
Boise, Idaho
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have a great show for your tonight featuring Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis defending his belt against Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and Jesse Ventura will make his debut on the program. You will also see the Rock and Roll Express in action and Tito Santana meets the tough Ron Starr.
We are just days away from the second Festival of Champions at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon. The wrestling world is buzzing about the incredible lineup for this card including the homecoming of stars like World Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper, Jesse “the Body” Ventura and Billy Jack Haynes. Also scheduled are main-event matches such as World Tag-Team Champions the Wild Samoans facing the Killer Bees, Al Perez battling Tito Santana. Colonel Debeers and Junkyard Dog in a dog-collar match, Ron Bass meets Jimmy Snuka, and the popular Rock and Roll Express takes on the Sheepherders. One of the most grueling matches at the Festival will be between hated rivals Greg Valentine and Magnum TA. The two have quite a history, including a sneak attack by Valentine on TA two weeks ago. Here to talk about his upcoming grudge match with Greg Valentine is Magnum TA.
Magnum TA: Thank you Mean Gene. Being a part of the UWE has allowed me to wrestle in front of an international audience, to win over a new group of fans. But that also means that I have a lot more people that I am fighting for. I get cards and letters from Maine down to Florida, from Texas to Oregon. All those fans asking me, begging me, to get rid of Greg Valentine. At the Festival of Champions, it’s time for Valentine to pay for his sins. I beat him fair and square at the first Festival. His response was to sneak attack me during an interview. That’s the response of a coward. Valentine, when you and I step into the ring, man to man, you will get beat again. And if you dare come back to the UWE after your beating, it’ll happen over, and over, and over again. You pushed it too far Valentine, now it’s my time to fight back.
Gene Okerlund: Magnum TA is ready for his big match with Greg Valentine at the Festival of Champions in Portland this Sunday. Let’s head to the ring for our first televised match of the evening as the Rock and Roll Express are in action. Take it away Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage.
Match #1
Rock and Roll Express defeat Los Villanos (FA) via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: The Rock and Roll Express are looking to get back into the tag-team title picture with a win over the Sheepherders at the Festival. Both teams are fighting to get a shot at our next guests, the duo who hold those world titles, the Wild Samoans. They join us now with their boisterous manager Lou Albano.
Captain Lou Albano: You’d be boisterous too Gene if you had an unstoppable, unbeatable team like the Wild Samoans. These two monsters are the most powerful tag team in all of wrestling, and ain’t no little bees going to stop them. We’ve beaten teams all over the world, we’ve retired wrestlers from coast to coast, jack. This Sunday night, in Portland, Oregon, you join that list Killer Bees. When we’re done with them, we dare anyone to come take us on.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: This Sunday night in Portland, Junkyard Dog will face Colonel Debeers in a dog-collar match. The way these two have been going at it lately, I can only image what’s going to happen Saturday night when they’re linked together by a steel chain. Let’s hear from Colonel Debeers and get his thoughts on Saturday night’s match.
---Colonel Debeers arrived at the interview station with a dog-collar and steel chain placed around a stuffed animal---
Colonel Debeers: You see this dog, it’s giving me more of a fight than you ever will, Junkyard Dog. This little dog here knows his role, he knows who he is, he knows his master. You on the other hand don’t want to accept your place. What happens to dogs that get out of line, they get punished. That is exactly what’s going happen on Sunday night. I’ve wrestled in Portland before, I know what those people want. They may not admit it, but those fans sitting in that arena are going to be hoping you get put back in your place. I will make sure that happens.
Gene Okerlund: Debeers may think that the Portland fans are going to root for him Sunday night but we all know better. In our next match we are thrilled to welcome to the program the man who will be challenging for the world heavyweight title, Jesse “the Body” Ventura.
Match #2
Jesse Ventura defeats Scott Casey by pinfall. He then taunts and calls out Piper following the match.
Gene Okerlund: The Body shows us why he is a real threat to take the world heavyweight championship from Roddy Piper this Sunday night in Portland. It should be an amazing match! Another wrestler returning home at the Festival is our next guest, Billy Jack Haynes. Billy Jack, how does it feel to be going back to Portland.
Billy Jack Haynes: It feels great, brother. Portland has some of the best wrestling fans in the world, they love the sport and they love people who do it the right way. I’ve sweat, I’ve bleed, I’ve given my heart and soul in that Portland ring. This Sunday night will be no different. Bad News Allen is as tough as they come. He’s a monster. All the fans in the Pacific Northwest know that I ain’t afraid of monsters, I’m the monster-slayer, daddy.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: At the Festival of Champions, Al Perez will face Tito Santana. The Latin Heartthrob has a real opportunity to rise up the pecking-order in the UWE. Joining us now is the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez.
Al Perez: Lord James Blears and all his cronies in the UWE have kept me down for too long. They go around protecting people like Tito Santana. That protection ends Sunday night. You are just a stepping stone on my way to title gold. When I leave you on the ground, beat to a mess, all those ladies in the coliseum will be fighting to catch a glimpse of the Latin Heartthrob. They’ll be fighting to catch a glimpse of this chiseled frame. They’ll be fighting for a chance to see the future champion. Santana, arriba comes to an end in Portland.
Gene Okerlund: Al Perez is ready for his big match against Tito Santana at the Festival of Champions. Let’s get to the ring as the man he will be facing is in action in our next match.
Match #3
Tito Santana defeats Black Bart via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Tito Santana against Al Perez has to be one of the most underrated matches on the card at the Festival. It has a real chance to steal the show. Another wrestler whose match is one of the most anticipated at the Festival involves our next guest, Junkyard Dog.
Junkyard Dog: You see this steel chain, it means you can’t run from me, it means you can’t hide from me. You’re in my world now, chump. All that talking you’ve been doing, it’s going to end real quick on Sunday night. Nothing shuts up a loud-mouth like a steel chain up-side their head. Once they lock it in daddy, there is no way out. You better buy yourself a whole row of seats on that airplae, because when I send you back to South Africa, you’re going to go back laid out!
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: We are moments away from our huge main event tonight where Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis defends against Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka. Someone also in a main event match is our next guest, who headlines our big card on Sunday night in Portland. Please welcome the heavyweight champion of the world, the incomparable Roddy Piper.
Roddy Piper: Meano Geno. They’re searching the world trying to find someone who can take down the champ. They ain’t looked far enough, man. This muscle-head may have all the girls looking at him on Venice Beach. We ain’t going to be on Venice Beach this Sunday night. We’re going to be in Portland, Oregon, the place I got my start, the place that gave me what I needed to win this world title. I sure ain’t gonna lose it in there.
---Jesse Ventura rushes to the interview area----
Jesse Ventura: Listen here Piper, you take a real good look at that title, you sleep with it next to if you have to. Because Sunday night, that title won’t be around your waist anymore. These arms, you see these muscles, there ain’t nothing you and your skirt can do about it.
Roddy Piper: You may win the most popular guy at the beach, jack, but that don’t mean nothing in a wrestling ring. You’re in my home now.
---The two men start to tussle when security rushes to intervene---
Gene Okerlund: Save it for Sunday night gentleman. Thank goodness for security or who knows what might have happened. Let’s head to the ring for our main event of the evening.
Match #4
Jimmy Snuka defeats Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis via disqualification for outside interference when Cowboy Ron Bass interferes in the match.
Gene Okerlund: Ron Bass cost Jimmy Snuka the television title. I’m sure Superfly is going to try and make him pay for that at their big match on Sunday night. That’s it for us wrestling fans. Tune in next week as we’ll have a complete recap of the Festival of Champions. And for those of you who can’t wait, you can call 1-900-UWE-NEWS all Sunday evening to get up-to-minute updates. See you next week.
