“CANADIAN ALL-STAR WRESTLING”
Broadcast on Saturday, June 9, 1984 on CBC affiliates across Canada
Taped earlier in the day at the Garden City Arena in St. Catherines, Ontario
Opening Clip:
. . . After a few minutes of complete domination, Orndorff and the Superstar get the win when Orndorff drops Joe Marcus with a Piledriver, at the same time Superstar hits Bob Marcus with the Corkscrew Neckbreaker.
Superstar and Orndorff each cover a Marcus brother, with the referee counting the pin of Orndorff on Joe, as they’re the legal men.
After the decision is announced, Superstar hits Bob Marcus with a second Neckbreaker. As Heenan and his team left the ring, medical personnel checked on Bob Marcus, eventually fitting him with a neckbrace and taking him from the ring on a stretcher!
Billy Red Lyons, Ed Whalen and Pat Patterson are seated at the announce desk. They welcome us to “Canadian All-Star Wrestling”!
Billy Red hypes today’s program, and says that our feature bout was taped last Saturday night at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, where Jay Youngblood and Ken Patera met the finals of the last of the four Canadian title tournaments.
Lyons, Whalen and Patterson then talk a little bit about the clip we saw at the top of the program, where the Masked Superstar used his Corkscrew Neckbreaker maneuver to send Bob Marcus out on a stretcher. Billy Red says that, unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident, as the Superstar has left a trail of injured wrestlers in his wake.
Billy Red says that Bobby Heenan has pointed the Superstar in the direction of the International champion Dino Bravo, after Bravo rejected Heenan’s offer to manage him. The first time Bravo and the masked man crossed paths, things didn’t go well for Bravo.
VTR: CWF TV 5-19-84:
The match never gets started, as Bravo is jumped by the Masked Superstar before he can even enter the ring! Superstar pummels Bravo on the floor, sends him head-first into the ringpost, then rolls him into the ring.
Inside the ring, the Superstar picks up the dazed International champ, and drops him with the corkscrew Neckbreaker! From there, Superstar takes Dino’s International title belt, and repeatedly smashes Bravo in the head with it!
Superstar then pulls Bravo up, and Dino’s wearing the crimson mask! For the viewing audience at home, CBC puts a big “X” over Bravo’s face every time the camera gets close!
The sadistic masked man continues to pound away at Bravo, who’s covered in blood, and not even able to defend himself. At this point, Dewey Robertson, Rick Martel, Rocky Johnson and the Rougeau brothers hit the ring and chase the Superstar off.
The damage has been done, though, and Bravo has to be helped to the back, as he’s unable to stand on his own.
END VTR
Then, two weeks ago, Bravo hit the ring to stop the Superstar from permanently injuring young Tom Zenk.
VTR: CWF TV 5-26-84:
After having his hand raised, Superstar decides he hasn’t inflicted enough punishment, and gives Zenk a second neckbreaker!
He then pulls Zenk up and signals that he’s going to give him a third! The referee tries to stop him, but Superstar just shoves him to the mat!
HERE COMES DINO BRAVO!!!
The International champ hits the ring. Superstar tosses Zenk aside as Bravo slides into the ring. Superstar goes at him, but Bravo blocks his punches, and stuns the Superstar with a flurry of rights and lefts!
Bobby Heenan pulls the Superstar out of the ring before Bravo can do any further damage. Superstar wants to get back in and fight, but Heenan convinces him to head to the back.
Bravo gets on the house mic and says that Superstar’s real tough when he jumps people from behind, but when it’s a fair fight, face to face, he runs with his tail between his legs!
As Bravo climbs out of the ring, the Superstar rushes back out!!!! They tear into each other again, but a group of referees and other wrestlers are right behind the Superstar, and they quickly get them separated.
END VTR
Billy Red says that the International champ and the Masked Superstar are on a collision course, and the fans will definitely want to get out and see them when they come to town!
BRET HART defeats BOBBY BASS (FA). Bret rebounds after his loss to the Cobra that we saw on last week’s show. He methodically wears Bass down, eventually locking Bass in a submission hold, that Billy Red calls the Scorpion lock, a hold created by Japanese star Riki Choshu. Bass gives up, and Bret is victorious. Throughout the match, the commentary team puts Bret over as one of the most technically gifted competitors in the sport.
THE MIDNIGHT EXPRESS: BOBBY EATON & DENNIS CONDREY (w/ Jim Cornette) defeat BOB & JOE MARCUS (FA). Eaton and Condrey get the win after hitting the Rocket Launcher onto Joe, with Eaton then covering him for the 1, 2, 3.
After the match, Pat Patterson joins Cornette, Eaton and Condrey at ringside.
Patterson says that we’re about four weeks away from the MX facing Jacques and Raymond Rougeau for the vacant Canadian Tag Team titles. Cornette thinks it’s pointless to even have this match, the result is a foregone conclusion, the CWF might as well just give Eaton and Condrey the belts right now and save the Rougeaus the humiliation!
Cornette says the idea of a couple of Canadians, FRENCH Canadians no less, beating the greatest tag team walking the face of the earth is just ridiculous!
Patterson says that Cornette might be underestimating the Rougeaus, Patterson’s been in the ring with them, and he knows what they can do. Corny says that these men, Eaton and Condrey, have revolutionized tag team wrestling, they’ve won championships in every promotion they’ve been in, they’ve beat every team that’s been thrown at them. The Rougeaus are a fine team, but fine isn’t going to cut it against the very best, and that’s what the Midnight Express are!
Cornette, Eaton and Condrey then hang around at the announcer’s desk for the next match.
JACQUES & RAYMOND ROUGEAU defeat THE WILDMAN & THE HUNGARIAN WOLFMAN (FA). The unorthodox duo of the Wildman and the Wolfman give the Rougeaus a tough time early on. The Rougeaus eventually take control of the match, but Eaton and Condrey make their way from the announcers desk down to ringside. This distracts Jacques and Raymond, and almost costs them the match, as Raymond jaws with Eaton and Condrey, and the Wildman takes the opportunity to attack him from behind. Despite the distraction, the Rougeaus pick up the win, when Raymond makes a blind tag to Jacques, who then catches the Wildman by surprise with a bodypress from the top rope for the 1, 2, 3!
We then go to a video montage of Rocky Johnson.
TULLY BLANCHARD defeats LEO BURKE. Burke has been a top star in Canada for a number of years, having held titles from the Maritimes to the west coast. He gives Tully a tough match here, but in the end, Blanchard gets the win with the slingshot suplex.
TAPED ON 6/2/84 IN VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JIP:
JAY YOUNGBLOOD defeats KEN PATERA[/b]. We join the match already in progress. Youngblood finds himself at a disadvantage against the bigger, stronger Patera. Patera pummels Youngblood, but the youngster won’t stay down. Eventually, Youngblood battles back, and stuns Patera with several knife-edged chops, before coming off the top rope with a big flying Tomahawk Chop! That puts Patera flat on his back on the mat, and Youngblood takes advantage, covering Patera for the 1, 2, 3!
Jay Youngblood moves onto the final semi-final spot in the Canadian title tournament!
Billy Red announces that the semi-final matches will start next week, with Youngblood facing Tully Blanchard, and then the following week, Rick Martel takes on the Cobra!
Lyons, Whalen and Patterson then wrap up the show, and hype next week’s program.
