UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, July 3
Airing: Friday, July 6, ESPN
Oakland, California
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We are only a few weeks away from the Festival of Champions in Portland, Oregon on July 15. You’ll hear from many the participants in that great card tonight. Also, the world tag-team champions the Wild Samoans defend their belts against the youngsters who have shown much potential, the Rising Stars Brett Sawyer and Kendall Windham.
Last week, UWE Commissioner Lord James Blears announced that Jesse “the Body” Ventura, a name known all around the world, would be challenging Roddy Piper for the world heavyweight championship in Portland. In Ventura’s corner will be Piper’s longtime foe Jake “the Snake” Roberts. Even Piper’s biggest fans know he has tough odds to overcome to keep his belt. Here to talk about his big match at the Festival of Champions in Portland is the heavyweight champion of the world, Roddy Piper.
Roddy Piper: The odds are stacked against me?!? This is isn’t the lottery Mean Gene. This is professional wrestling jack. The only odds you need in your favor are the ones you create. I’ve spent my whole career taking on people like Ventura and Roberts. Now I get to take them on together. It’ll be like a double-feature, except the result will be the same each time: I’m walking out with the world title. All you fans in Portland, anyone in the Pacific Northwest, get to that arena on July 15 because you will see not one, but two men fall. That’s my guarantee.
Match #1
Al Perez defeated Scott Casey via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Al Perez gets a huge opportunity at the Festival of Champions as he takes on Tito Santana, and he showed us tonight why he’s earned that shot. Let’s hear from the man he’ll face on July 15, Tito Santana.
Tito Santana: Al Perez is a tough competitor, but he is very mistaken if he thinks he’ll make a name for himself at my expense. Perez is missing something that I have, something that drives me and motivates me, the cheer of the fans. When I pin Perez in Portland on July 15, I know the fans will be cheering loudly. Perez thinks he can make a name for himself, he’s right. He’ll be known as the guy who got beat again by Tito Santana. Arriba, Mean Gean!
---Commercial Break----
Gene Okerlund: One of the most intriguing matchups of the upcoming Festival of Champions is the contest between Superfly Jimmy Snuka and the Outlaw Ron Bass. Both men have been very successful since arriving in the UWE. Joining us now is one of the toughest cowboys you’ll ever meet, Ron Bass, and his trusty bullwhip Betsy.
Ron Bass: Gene, you would call what I’ve done here in the UWE as success? I have another word for it, devastation. Anyone of these pansy city-slickers that they’ve put in my path has suffered the same fate, they’ve been taken out on a stretcher. Jimmy Snuka, you like to jump and fly around the ring boy. This is wrestling, this ain’t gymnastics. Once you meet up with my friend, this here bullwhip, there won’t be no more flying around. The Superfly will be grounded once and for all.
Gene Okerlund: A confident Ron Bass promises to take the air out of the Superfly in Portland. Let’s go to the ring for our next match as the tough Bad News Allen is in action.
Match #2
Bad News Allen defeats Scott Simpson by pinfall. After the match, Allen continues his assault on Simpson until Billy Jack Haynes runs to the ring to make the save. Allen and Haynes fight until security intervenes.
Gene Okerlund: Bad News Allen and Billy Jack Haynes don’t want to wait for their match at the Festival of Champions, they are ready to go now! Another wrestler with a big match at the Festival of Champions is our next guest, Junkyard Dog. JYD, you are meeting your rival Colonel Debeers in a dog-collar match in Portland. That match is your specialty. You have to be excited for that.
Junkyard Dog: I’ll tell you what I’m excited about, I’m excited about kicking the tar out of that loud-mouth Colonel Debeers. You made the mistake of your life agreeing to face the Junkyard Dog in a dog-collar match. Dogs like me know our way around a dog-collar, we know our way around a chain, jack. Only a damn fool thinks he can beat a Dog as it’s own game. Colonel Debeers, you done run your mouth one too many times. At the Festival of Champions, this chain, I''ll shut that loud mouth for good.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Two weeks ago, Magnum TA was the victim of a vicious attack by Greg Valentine. Magnum has been cleared to get back in the ring and he’s here with us tonight. Magnum, you and Greg Valentine appear to have some unfinished business.
Magnum TA: First of all, I want to thank all my fans for the letters and the cards. As I was healing up those notes gave me inspiration and reminded me why I need to get back in the ring as soon as possible. It reminded me that I can’t let people like Greg Valentine win. I beat you fair and square in Phoenix. Your response was to attack me during an interview. You’re a coward, Valentine, and cowards always get exposed. When you have to step into the ring with me in Portland, you are going to get a taught a lesson you’ll never forget, son.
Gene Okerlund: Magnum TA is motivated and ready to get revenge against Greg Valentine. Let’s head to the ring as Colonel Debeers in in action.
Match #3
Colonel Debeers defeats Gene Lewis (FA) via pinfall. Debeers takes his own dog collar and chain into the ring and mocks Junkyard Dog after the match.
Gene Okerlund: Debeers better watch out as he’s playing with a dog who will definitely bite back. At the Festival of Champions in Portland, our next guests earned a shot at the world tag-team titles. Please welcome the Killer Bees, B. Brian Blair and Jim Brunzell.
B. Brian Blair: I know we have the chance of a lifetime. A shot at winning the world tag-team titles. This is an opportunity that every wrestler dreams about. We aren’t going to let this chance slip away. The Wild Samoans are as mean and as tough as they come. But we’ve been in this business for a long-time, we know about strategy, we know about exposing your opponent’s weakness. We’ll have a gameplan and we’ll be ready to take the belts on July 15.
Jim Brunzell: The fans deserve tag-team champions they can be proud of. They don’t have that now. The Wild Samoans don’t play by the rules, they have one of the dirtiest managers in the business in Captain Lou Albano. All that won’t matter in the ring in Portland. We’ll take you on at your own game and when it’s all said and done, we’re winning those belts for all the great wrestling fans who deserve champions to be proud of.
---Commercial Break----
Gene Okerlund: Before our huge main event, I want to let all you amazing fans know that next week, Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis defends his title against Jimmy Snuka in our main event. Before tonight’s main event, we have another video sent in from the man who hopes to become the world heavyweight champion on July 15, Jesse “the Body” Ventura. Ventura will be on the program next week.
---Video of Jesse Ventura walking down Venice Beach---
Jesse Ventura: You see all these people around, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Body. They ain’t out here looking for Roddy Piper, they’re out here for me. The most famous name in wrestling, the man with the chiseled body, I’ll be the one called world champion after we meet on July 15. Is it really him? Yes sweetheart, it’s me. The one you dream about, the one you wish your husband could be. I’ll be world champion soon, and all you lovely ladies around, you can take that to the bank.
With these muscles, and Jake Roberts in my corner, Roddy Piper ain't got a chance.
Gene Okerlund: There’s a reason that Jesse Ventura is such a big name in wrestling, because he can back up that talk in the ring. We’ll see him in action next week. It’s time for our huge main event as the world tag-team champions the Wild Samoans defend their belts against the Rising Stars.
Match #4
UWE World Tag-Team Champions the Wild Samoans w/ Captain Lou Albano defeat the Rising Stars (Brett Sawyer and Kendal Windham) via pinfall. The youngsters put up a tough fight but eventually fall to the veterans. After the match, Kevin Sullivan of the Army of Darkness comes to ringside and again performs a rather odd ceremony directed at Brett Sawyer. Windham rushes Brett to the back but it’s obvious that Sawyer is affected by these actions.
Gene Okerlund: Another great episode of wrestling action is in the books. Next week, you will see Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis defend his belt against Jimmy Snuka, and Jesse Ventura will be in action. You won’t want to miss it! Until next time.
---End of television program---
