UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, June 26
Airing: Friday, June 29, ESPN
Anaheim, California
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring! Do we have an amazing show in store for you tonight. You will see the Killer Bees and the Sheepherders in action, Jimmy Snuka takes on Matt Bourne, and in our main event, Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis defends his belt against newcomer Jesse Barr.
Last week, Lord James Blear let us know about a number of huge happenings in the UWE, including the 30-day suspension of Jake Roberts from in-ring competition and the upcoming BLOCKBUSTER BATTLE in Denver, Colorado at the Festival of Champions on August 12. Here to give us more details is the Commissioner of the UWE, Lord James Blears:
Lord James Blears: As I announced last week, we here in the UWE pride ourselves on bringing to you the most innovative matches in wrestling. On August 12, in Denver, Colorado, we are hosting the first BLOCKBUSTER BATTLE, which will be a two-ring match featuring 20 UWE superstars fighting to be named the Blockbuster Battle winner and a prize of $250,000. Yes, you heard me right, a quarter of a million dollars. The competition will be fierce in this inaugural event!
The other outstanding business is announcing an opponent for UWE World Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper for July 15th. We are going to be at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, a community known for its passionate wrestling fans. A wrestler who invoked intense passion from those fans is Jesse “the Body” Ventura. Jesse Ventura is one of the most recognizable names in wrestling and a man who accomplished so much in the Portland area. On July 15, he will be have a chance to compete for the world title right there at the Memorial Coliseum. What a matchup that will be!
Gene Okerlund: You heard it here first, on July 15 in Portland, Oregon, Roddy Piper will defend his belt against Jesse “the Body” Ventura. You won’t want to miss it! We’ll hear from Roddy Piper and Jesse Ventura via video later in the program. Let’s send you to Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage who are calling our first match of the evening.
Match #1
Killer Bees defeated Black Bart and Lanny Kean (FA) via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: The Killer Bees show why they are the number one contenders to the Wild Samoans and have earned a title shot at the Festival of Champions in Portland on July 15. Our next guests are looking to get themselves back into the tag-team title picture with a big match against the Sheepherders at the Festival. Let’s welcome the Rock and Roll Express, Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson.
Ricky Morton: We ain’t done chasing those tag-team titles. We had a little setback at the first Festival of Champions. But that’s all it was daddy, a setback. The Wild Samoans and the Captain Lou Albano cheated their way to a victory. They cost us the titles and set us down the rankings. It isn’t fair but we’re not ones to sit around crying. Instead we’re going to beat whoever we need to beat to get another shot at the title gold.
Robert Gibson: Sheepherders, it’s not your lucky day. The powers that be in the UWE have decided that we are facing you in Portland. You are nothing but an obstacle preventing us to get back where we want to be. We’ve won world titles before, we plan on doing it again. In Portland, you better come to the ring prepared for a war, because there ain’t nothing that’s going to stop us from climbing back into to the title hunt.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Last week it was announced that Tito Santana will face the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez at the Festival of Champions in Portland. Here to talk about his big match is the heartthrob himself, Al Perez.
Al Perez: Since I got here to the UWE, I’ve been nothing but disrespected, put in matches that are below the prestige of a superstar like myself. You need to understand, I’m known around the world, women from continent to continent shout name of the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez. The only way to get respect is to take it. I have a match against the pretender, the wannabe Tito Santana. You’re an embarrassment to our people Santana. You are a sniveling, goody-too-shoes who has never been a real fight. On July 15, in Portland, Oregon, you are going to be a fight like you’ve never seen before.
Gene Okerlund: Al Perez looks to make the most of opportunity against Tito Santana at the Festival of Champions in Portland. Let’s head to the ring as the Sheepherders are in action.
Match #2
Sheepherders w/ Lord Jonathan Boyd defeats Steve Simpson and Gene Lewis (FA).
Gene Okerlund: The Sheepherders show that they too will do what it takes to remain in contention for the World Tag-Team Titles. They have a huge matchup against the Rock and Roll Express at the Festival of Champions in Portland. Last week on this program, we saw Greg Valentine attacked Magnum TA during his interview and administer a brutal beating of the popular star. Magnum TA is recuperating and will be on next week’s show. Here now, though, is Greg Valentine. Hammer, that attack was uncalled for…
Greg Valentine: Shut your mouth Gene or you’ll suffer the same as Magnum TA! I told you boy that you weren’t ready for Greg Valentine. You may think you’re some star of Hollywood now but as the people watching saw last week, you ain’t nothing compared to me. You got lucky down in Phoenix when you beat me at the first Festival of Champions. Your luck has run out. People saw you laying on the floor, getting the tar beat of you last week. The people in that arena in Portland, they’re going to see the same thing happen again on July 15.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: We learned earlier tonight that world heavyweight Roddy Piper will be defending his belt against Jesse Ventura in Portland. We have the incredible honor of being joined by the world champion.
Roddy Piper: Ventura, you think you won the lottery. You think you got that golden ticket that gives you a chance to fight the world champion right here in the greatest wrestling promotion in the world. Take a closer look at that golden ticket, you’re going to see real quick, it ain’t a golden ticket at all, it’s a ticket to a horror show. They call you the Body because you’re big, because you’re strong, because you’re mean. Let me let you in on a little secret. So am I. Those fans in Portland know what you can do. They know what I can do. On July 15, we’re going back to the future, and that the city that smells like rses, it ain’t gonna smell like a rose garden much longer.
Gene Okerlund: The world champion does not seem intimidated by the prospects of facing Jesse Ventura. Let’s head to the ring for our next match of the evening.
Match #3
Jimmy Snuka defeats Ron Starr when Snuka lands a Superfly Smash and pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Jimmy Snuka is on quite a roll lately, and he’ll hope to keep the momentum going when he faces the tough Cowboy Ron Bass at the Festival of Champions in Portland. Our next guest knows Portland very well, having achieved much success in the Rose City. Joining me now is Billy Jack Haynes. Billy Jack, you have someone who wants to ruin your homecoming to Portland on July 15. That person is Bad News Allen.
Billy Jack Haynes: Thank you Gene and thank you to all the fans out there for your support. It’s no secret, I’m excited to be heading back to Portland, my home. Here’s the thing about your home. You protect it at all costs. This guy Bad News Allen thinks he can come to Portland, come into my ring in front of my fans? He really thinks he can beat me in front of the place I call home? Bad News Allen, it ain’t gonna happen. In front of the people who have given me my inspiration, who gave me my start, you are going to be beat. The only recipient of bad news that night will be you, when that ref is holding my hand in the air.
--Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: We heard it earlier in the evening, Jesse “the Body” Ventura will challenge for the world heavyweight title in July 15 in Portland. We have a video from the Body that we’ll show you now.
---Jesse Ventura is lifting weights when he stops to address the camera---
Jesse Ventura: I’ve heard a lot about you lately Piper. I’ve heard you’re a pretender champion who has to get the help of his friends to keep his belt. That you were so scared of Jake Roberts you pulled strings and got him suspended. That you ain’t nothing but a cheap, B-movie pretending to be the star of Hollywood. It’s time the people of the UWE had a real champion. A champion that people can envy, a champion they want to be. Look at this Piper, this is what’s coming for you on July 15 in Portland, and mark my words, you ain’t coming out of there with the title. The wrestling fans in Portland know what I’m capable of. Just to make sure there aren’t any shenanigans, that there is no one to mess with my night, I’ve hired a consultant, a manager to be at ringside with me. Let me introduce you to him. Come out here Snake.
---Jake Roberts appears on screen---
Jake Roberts: My goal was to win the world title. That goal has morphed into something else, a need to end your career once and for all, Piper. You crossed me one too many times. Whether it’s me doing it or the Body, the end result is going to be the same, you are going to be put out of wrestling for good. My 30-day suspension is very clear, it’s a suspension from wrestling. It’s not a suspension from managing. I will be in Ventura’s corner and I will help him do all I can to end your career Piper. Do you see this rose, do you see what happens when it’s crushed. That’s what is going to happen in Portland on July 15.
Gene Okerlund: Not only does Roddy Piper have to face Jesse Ventura at the Festival of Champions, he will have to do so with Jake Roberts in Ventura’s corner. The odds are definitely stacked against the world champ. Let’s head to the ring for our main event as Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis is in action against Jesse Barr.
Match #4
Jesse Barr defeats Hollywood Heavyweight Champion Adrian Adonis w/ Freddie Blassie via disqualification for outside interference when Lord Jonathan Boyd comes to the ring and attacks Barr during the match.
Gene Okerlund: Jonathan Boyd promised that Jesse Barr would pay for his role in the Sheepherders v. Killer Bees match at the first Festival of Champions. Tonight he carried out on that promise. Join us next week wrestling fans as the world tag-team champions Wild Samoans will defend their belts against the Rising Stars and we will hear from the returning Magnum TA. Until next week!
