“CANADIAN ALL-STAR WRESTLING”
Broadcast on Saturday, May 26, 1984 on CBC affiliates across Canada
Taped earlier in the day at the Victoria Pavilion in Calgary, Alberta
Opening Clip:
. . . The match never gets started, as Bravo is jumped by the Masked Superstar before he can even enter the ring! Superstar pummels Bravo on the floor, sends him head-first into the ringpost, then rolls him into the ring.
Inside the ring, the Superstar picks up the dazed International champ, and drops him with the corkscrew Neckbreaker! From there, Superstar takes Dino’s International title belt, and repeatedly smashes Bravo in the head with it!
Superstar then pulls Bravo up, and Dino’s wearing the crimson mask! For the viewing audience at home, CBC puts a big “X” over Bravo’s face every time the camera gets close!
The sadistic masked man continues to pound away at Bravo, who’s covered in blood, and not even able to defend himself. At this point, Dewey Robertson, Rick Martel, Rocky Johnson and the Rougeau brothers hit the ring and chase the Superstar off.
The damage has been done, though, and Bravo has to be helped to the back, as he’s unable to stand on his own.
Billy Red Lyons, Ed Whalen and Pat Patterson are seated at the announce desk. They welcome us to “Canadian All-Star Wrestling”!
Billy Red says that we’re just over a month away from the big Canada Day show at Lansdowne Park in the nation’s capital. So far, we know that the finals of the Canadian title tournament will take place. Another match has been announced, Dino Bravo will face the Masked Superstar.
Plus, they were informed earlier in the week by CWF President Gene Kiniski, that there will be a match on July 1st to crown the Canadian Tag Team champions, between the Rougeau brothers, Jacques and Raymond, and Jim Cornette’s Midnight Express!
TONY PARISI defeats BOBBY BASS (FA). Parisi wins a tough match over Bass, another veteran, with the Cannonball off the top rope.
Lyons, Whalen and Patterson talk about the Canadian title tournament, and say that we saw the finals of the first tournament last week on this show, where Rick Martel advanced. The second tournament took place last Saturday night at the Mecca of professional wrestling, Maple Leaf Gardens. It was a wild and wooly night of pro wrestling, and in the end, Tully Blanchard and local Toronto favourite Rocky Johnson met in the finals. We’ll see that match right here today on television!
We see footage from the tournament. Short clips are shown of Tully defeating former Toronto Argonaut George Wells in the first round, and winning a hard-fought match against Jay Youngblood in the semi-finals. Rocky beat Mad Dog Lefebvre in the opening round, and Bobby Duncum in the semi-finals to move onto the match with Blanchard.
Lyons says that, in just a few hours, the third tournament will take place, just across town, at the Olympic Saddledome!
JACQUES & RAYMOND ROUGEAU defeat SCRAP IRON SCRANTON (FA) & CHRIS COLT (FA). Scranton and Colt give the Rougeaus some anxious moments, but in the end, Jacques got the win for the brothers, hitting Scranton with a missile dropkick for the pinfall.
THE MASKED SUPERSTAR (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeats TOM ZENK. Zenk is just starting out, but he’s already looking very impressive, even holding his own early on with the sadistic Masked Superstar. Eventually the Superstar takes control of the match, and hits the Corkscrew Neckbreaker for the pinfall victory.
After having his hand raised, Superstar decides he hasn’t inflicted enough punishment, and gives Zenk a second neckbreaker!
He then pulls Zenk up and signals that he’s going to give him a third! The referee tries to stop him, but Superstar just shoves him to the mat!
HERE COMES DINO BRAVO!!!
The International champ hits the ring. Superstar tosses Zenk aside as Bravo slides into the ring. Superstar goes at him, but Bravo blocks his punches, and stuns the Superstar with a flurry of rights and lefts!
Bobby Heenan pulls the Superstar out of the ring before Bravo can do any further damage. Superstar wants to get back in and fight, but Heenan convinces him to head to the back.
Bravo gets on the house mic and says that Superstar’s real tough when he jumps people from behind, but when it’s a fair fight, face to face, he runs with his tail between his legs!
As Bravo climbs out of the ring, the Superstar rushes back out!!!! They tear into each other again, but a group of referees and other wrestlers are right behind the Superstar, and they quickly get them separated!
BOBBY DUNCUM & KEN PATERA defeat JOHN BONELLO (FA) & RANDY SCOTT (FA). Bonello and Scott are at a big height and weight disadvantage here, but that doesn’t seem to matter to them, they tear right into Duncum and Patera early on, trying to stick and move and use lots of quick tags to keep Duncum and Patera off their game. It works for a bit, until Duncum catches Bonello with a knee to the gut, then things go downhill in a hurry for the face team! Duncum pummels Bonello, then throws him into corner, allowing him to tag his partner. Scott doesn’t fare much better, until Patera tags in, and Scott stuns him with a flurry of punches. It’s short-lived, though, as Scott bounces off the ropes and goes for a crossbody block. Patera catches him, then drives him into the mat with a slam. Patera methodically takes Scott apart, then tags in Duncum, who nails a Lariat for the pinfall.
On commentary, Lyons, Whalen and Patterson are impressed with Bonello and Scott, saying they gave up a lot to Duncum and Patera in terms of height, weight and experience, but they still gave a good showing of themselves, and Lyons thinks we’ll be seeing more of this team.
Pat Patterson interviews Bret Hart at ringside. Bret is happy to be back in his hometown, and hopes all the great Calgary fans will come out and support him tonight in the Canadian title tournament.
TAPED ON 5/19/84 IN TORONTO, ONTARIO, JIP:
TULLY BLANCHARD[/b] defeats ROCKY JOHNSON[/b]. We join the match already in progress. Tully has the upper hand, but when he attempts an elbowdrop, Rocky rolls out of the way. Tully is up quickly, though, and attempts another elbowdrop, and again Rocky rolls out of the way! This time, Johnson is up first, and as Tully staggers to his feet, Rocky shows off his boxing skills, peppering Tully with jabs, then a big right hook that puts Tully flat on his back, to the delight of the fans in Rocky’s hometown of Toronto. Tully is slow getting up, and he looks to be out on his feet, as he takes a couple of swings at Rocky, but he’s not even close to connecting. Rocky dances around, ala Muhammad Ali, and connects with the big knockout punch. Unfortunately for Rocky, before he can go for the cover, Tully rolls out under the bottom rope and to the floor.
Tully shakes off the cobwebs, and while he’s at it, he pulls what looks like a taped object out of his trunks, making sure to keep it out of view of the referee. Tully slides back into the ring, just in time to beat the referee’s count, and when Johnson moves in for the kill, Tully, with the object in his hand, clobbers Rocky! Johnson is out, he falls flat on his back on the mat, and Tully covers him for the 1, 2, 3!
Tully Blanchard has stolen a victory here, and as a result, he’ll move onto the semi-finals of the Canadian title tournament!
Lyons, Whalen and Patterson wrap up the show, and hype next week’s program.
