NWA SMW PRESENTS
SUMMER BLAST 1996
THURSDAY, JULY 4, 1996
FROM NEYLAND STADIUM IN KNOXVILLE, TN LES THATCHER is the ring announcer for the show, and he welcomes everyone to Neyland Stadium, home of the Tennessee Vols, for SUMMER BLAST 1996! Unabomb makes his way to the ring for the first match, but he’s not alone, as Dutch Mantell leads the monster to the ring. MATCH #1: UNABOMB (w/ Dutch Mantell) beats BOBBY WALKER via pinfall at about the 90-second mark after beating Walker to a pulp, and hitting him with a Powerbomb. Dutch Mantell gets on the house mic, and says that he’s responsible for bringing the Unabomb to SMW, and together, they will destroy everyone who gets in their way! MATCH #2: JESSE JAMES ARMSTRONG beats US Jr. Heavyweight Champ RIP ROGERS via pinfall after hitting a Pumphandle Slam. Jesse James Armstrong is the new US Jr. Heavyweight Champion!MATCH #3: “RAVISHING” RICK RUDE beats SCOTT ARMSTRONG via pinfall. Armstrong gives Rude all he could handle in Rude’s SMW debut. But in the end, Armstrong goes for a crossbody off the top rope, with Rude ducking out of the way, then delivering the Rude Awakening for the 1, 2, 3. MATCH #4: CHRIS CANDIDO beats STEVE ARMSTRONG via pinfall. Candido and Armstrong are pretty much evenly-matched here, and neither man can get an early advantage. Candido eventually takes over, though, and after wearing Armstrong down, he connects with the New Jersey Jam legdrop off the top rope for the pinfall. After the decision is announced, Candido stomps Armstrong a few times, before kicking him out of the ring. Candido then takes the house mic from Thatcher, and says that he know all of these fans are disappointed, because they don’t want to see some no-talent punk like Brad Armstrong challenge Funk for the NWA title, they want to see the Suicide Blond, Chris Candido, take the title from Funk! The fans let Candido know what they think about that, as a chorus of boos rain down from every corner of the stadium, but Candido just takes it all in stride, taunting the fans before leaving the ring. MATCH #5: SMW Tag Team Champions THE BRUISE BROTHERS (w/ Jim Cornette) defeat THE ROCK N’ ROLL EXPRESS. Morton and Gibson are hell-bent on regaining the SMW Tag Team Titles, but today would not be their day, as every time the Rock n’ Rolls were able to gain the upper hand, Jim Cornette would interfere and put a stop to it. The match ends when Ricky Morton whips Don Harris into the turnbuckle, then stands on the second buckle and punches Harris. Jim Cornette gets up on the apron, and throws powder in Morton’s face. This gives Harris a chance to lift Morton up, and deliver a running powerslam out of the corner. As Harris covers Morton, his brother makes sure that Gibson can’t break it up. After the match, Ron and Don Harris continue to pummel both Ricky and Robert. Cornette is joined outside the ring by Al Snow and Buddy Landel, and the three of them make sure that no one can get into the ring to help the Rock n’ Rolls. Several enhancement wrestlers try to break it up, but end getting a shot from Corny’s tennis racket for their trouble. Finally, two men storm the ring, and are able to fight their way past Cornette, Snow and Landel . . . It’s Rick and Scott, THE STEINER BROTHERS!!!Rick Steiner drops Jim Cornette with a Steinerline, then he and Scott knock Snow and Landel to the floor, before jumping into the ring. The Steiners brawl with the Bruise Brothers, eventually getting the upper hand, and running the Champions off. Rick and Scott then help Morton and Gibson up. Next up is the first of three big main events, as Terry Funk defends the NWA World Title against Brad Armstrong. MATCH #6: NWA World Champion TERRY FUNK beats BRAD ARMSTRONG via Count-out. The two men shake hands to start, and then wrestle a clean, scientific match. Late in the match, around the 20-minute mark, Chris Candido makes his way to ringside. He picks up the NWA title belt, which gets the attention of both Funk and Armstrong. Candido looks at the belt for a moment . . . and then puts it around his waist! Candido then taunts both Armstrong and Funk, with the Champion and challenger then jumping out of the ring and running Candido off. A few minutes later, Funk whips Armstrong into the ropes, with Brad ducking a clothesline attempt, but as he rebounds off the opposite ropes, but Armstrong and Funk have the same idea, and both go for a clothesline. Both men, and the referee, are knocked down. At that point, Candido makes his way back to ringside. Brad Armstrong is close to the ropes, and Candido pulls him out of the ring, and after a few punches, he slams Armstrong head-first into the ringpost! Brad crumbles to the floor, blood starting to run down his face. Funk gets to his knees as referee Dave Hebner gets up and starts counting Armstrong out. Funk stands up, but he’s wobbly, and Hebner reaches the count of 10, and awards the match to Funk. After that, Candido, who’s still out at ringside, puts the boots to Armstrong on the floor, until Terry Funk jumps out of the ring and starts brawling with Candido. Candido gets the upper hand, as Funk is still groggy, but Armstrong is able to get to his feet a moment later, and he joins in, helping Funk run Candido off. After Candido heads for the locker room, Funk and Armstrong shake hands and leave ringside. MATCH #7 - STEEL CAGE MATCH: TRACY SMOTHERS & JERRY “THE KING” LAWLER beat SMW Champion BUDDY LANDEL & AL SNOW (w/ Leia Meow). This feud has raged on for months. Throughout the course of the feud, the SMW title has changed hands, plenty of blood has been spilled, Smothers was tarred and feathered, and most recently, Landel put a bounty on the head of Tracy Smothers. Both teams have said that the feud will be settled right here in this match. The match is a wild one, as both teams want nothing but the complete annihilation of their opponents. All four men are introduced to the steel mesh early on, and it doesn’t take long for the blood to start flowing. Leia Meow cheers her men on from ringside. Landel and Snow gain an early advantage, and they send Lawler head-first into each of the four sides of the cage, then they focus on Tracy Smothers and give him a vicious beating. Landel sets Smothers up for a Piledriver, with Snow going to the top rope, but before they can hit the spike Piledriver, Lawler falls into the ropes, causing Snow to fall and get crotched on the top turnbuckle. Lawler rushes Landel and clotheslines him, dropping the SMW champ to the mat. Smothers then punches Snow a few times, before climbing up to the second turnbuckle, then all the way to the top . . . and hits Snow with a Superplex! While that’s going on, Lawler picks Landel up and delivers a Piledriver, then covers Buddy for the 1, 2, 3! Jerry Lawler has pinned the SMW Champion! The bell rings, but suddenly there’s some commotion, and Dutch Mantell and the Unabomb hit the ring! Unabomb throws the door open, then climbs into the cage, while Dutch tosses a chair in behind him, then padlocks the door! Unabomb grabs Lawler, picks him up, and heaves him head-first into the cage, then delivers a Powerbomb. From there, Unabomb grabs the chair, charges at Smothers, and nearly takes Tracy’s head off with a vicious chairshot. Landel and Snow cheer the monster on, as he continues to hit Smothers with the chair. Tracy is already a bloody mess from the match, and Unabomb repeatedly drives the edge of the chair into Tracy’s forehead. Unabomb then drops the chair, picks Tracy up, and POWERBOMBS him onto the chair! Unabomb isn’t done, he picks Smothers up, and delivers a SECOND Powerbomb onto the chair! He’s still not done, and as several wrestlers are trying to get the door of the cage open, Unabomb delivers a jumping Piledriver, driving Smothers’ head right into the chair. Finally a group of wrestlers are able to cut the lock that Mantell had put on the door, and get into the cage. They chase Landel, Snow and Unabomb off before tending to Smothers. Tracy isn’t moving, and after several minutes a stretcher is brought through the door and into the ring. Smothers is fitted in a neckbrace, and strapped to the stretcher before being carried from the ring. MATCH #8 - STEEL CAGE MATCH: BOB ARMSTRONG beats JIM CORNETTE. Armstrong has finally had enough of Jim Cornette and his shenanigans, and had this match signed so he could teach Cornette a lesson. Corny gets some offence in, and gets a few shots in with the tennis racket, but other than that, this match is all Bob Armstrong. He gets ahold of the tennis racket and starts wailing away on Cornette. Jim tries to run away, but he’s stuck inside the cage. Armstrong beats Cornette to a pulp, and then locks on the Figure-4 leglock. Cornette quickly submits and Bob Armstrong is declared the winner. Armstrong leaves the cage after the decision is announced, with Cornette grabbing the house mic from Les Thatcher and telling Armstrong that Bob hasn’t seen the last of him, and he won’t rest until he’s got Armstrong’s job!

THATCHER runs down what’s in store for us this week, including the tag team Steel Cage match from Summer Blast, and Brad Armstrong and Jerry “the King” Lawler will be the guests this week on Down & Dirty with Dutch! Tracy isn’t moving, and after several minutes a stretcher is brought through the door and into the ring. Smothers is fitted in a neckbrace, and strapped to the stretcher before being carried from the ring. **the match is edited down for TV, most of the clipping is done in the early part of the match, and about 25 minutes worth is shown on TV.**--- After the match, we see footage from the heel locker room at Neyland Stadium, where Jim Cornette and Buddy Landel give Unabomb the bounty money.--- In a pre-taped segment, STAN LANE runs down upcoming Smoky Mountain Wrestling shows, including a show tonight in West Liberty, KY at the Morgan County High School, which will include Steve Armstrong challenging for the Smoky Mountain title, and a big 14-man Battle Royal. This Tuesday night, July 13, SMW will be at the East High School gym in Morristown, and on that show there will be a huge main event, as international superstar Rick Rude teams up with Al Snow and SMW Champ Buddy Landel to face Brad Armstrong and the Steiner Brothers!--- DUTCH MANTELL is ringside, and it’s time for another edition of DOWN & DIRTY WITH DUTCH. This week, Dutch has a couple of Virginia state troopers with him, and he says that his guests this week are a couple of scumbags, and he wouldn’t put it past them to try something, so he’s brought a few of Virginia’s finest to the show, just to make sure Armstrong and Lawler don’t try anything. With that, Dutch introduces this week’s guests, BRAD ARMSTRONG and JERRY “THE KING” LAWLER. LAWLER and ARMSTRONG come out, and Dutch takes a step back, behind the state troopers. LAWLER taunts Mantell, saying that he’s not surprised that Dutch is hiding behind the police, after all of the times that Lawler’s beaten Mantell in the ring, Dutch knows he doesn’t stand a chance against the King. ARMSTRONG says that Dutch and Unabomb had better use the bounty money to get Unabomb a plane ticket somewhere far away, because Tracy Smothers is like family to him, and if Brad and the King get their hands on Unabomb, they’re going to tear him apart! MANTELL says that if they were smart, they’d look at what Unabomb did to Tracy Smothers, and realize that he could just as easily do the same thing to the two of them! He says that Smothers is nothing but a cripple now, he’s confined to a wheelchair, and if Armstrong and Lawler keep running their mouths, they’ll end up the same way! ARMSTRONG and LAWLER move towards Dutch, but the police officers stand between them and the Dutchman, with Mantell telling them that the interview is over, he’s tired of listening to them, and if they can’t act like civilized human beings, he’s not going to waste his, or the fans’, time by talking to them. ---LES and LANCE are joined at the broadcast area by Jim Cornette. Jim talks about the Steiner brothers showing up at Summer Blast, and says that these two meat heads have picked a fight with the wrong tag team, and says that he got a match signed for right here next week on TV, and says that the Bruise Brothers are going to destroy Rick and Scott Steiner! ---LES THATCHER and LANCE RUSSELL wrap things up. Thatcher hypes next week’s show, which will see new US Jr. Heavyweight Champ Jesse James Armstrong team up with his brother Steve, to take on Al Snow and SMW TV Champ Chris Candido, and in the main event, the Steiner Brothers will challenge the Bruise Brothers for the Smoky Mountain Tag titles!

Non stop action, no messin' around, pretty soon we're comin' to your town. The way you like it, the way it used to be...Smoky Mountain Wrestling's on TV"--- LES THATCHER and LANCE RUSSELL open the show in the broadcast area, in front of a large SMW banner, and welcome us to Newton, North Carolina for a special 90 minute edition of Smoky Mountain Wrestling. THATCHER says that next week’s episode of Smoky Mountain Wrestling will be the final one, as the show will be replaced by the nationally televised NWA Total Nonstop Action on TNT. He talks a little about some of the things that he’s witnessed while co-hosting the show, and says that the time he’s spent in SMW has been the best times of his career. He thanks the fans for tuning in, and says that both he and Lance will be staying on with the new NWA show in various capacities. LES then talks about what we’ll see on today’s program, which is 30 minutes longer than usual, to accommodate the matches. He says there’s been a slight change from what was announced at the end of last week’s show, instead of Terry Funk teaming with the Steiners to face the Bruise Bros and Unabomb, Jerry Lawler will take Funk’s place, and Funk will meet Smoky Mountain Champ Buddy Landel in a Title vs Title match! As well, NWA World Television Champion Chris Candido will face Brad Armstrong in a Best 2 out of 3 Falls match, and the winner will face the winner of the Funk – Landel match on next week’s show for the NWA title! --- A video montage is shown, highlighting Funk’s run with the NWA title, as well as Buddy Landel winning the Smoky Mountain Title, and turning back all challenges. The video highlights recent issues between Funk and Landel, leading up to the title vs title match today.---LES and LANCE are joined at the broadcast area by NWA President JERRY JARRETT. Jarrett talks about Smoky Mountain Wrestling being the flagship of the regional NWA system, and says that he hopes the fans will tune in to Total Nonstop Action on TNT, as the stars from SMW will be featured heavily on the new show as well. JARRETT says that he can’t wait for the Title vs Title match later today, as both Funk and Landel have been dominant Champions, and this match should be one for the ages. --- MATCH #1: US Jr. Heavyweight Champion JESSE JAMES ARMSTRONG beats AL SNOW (w/ Leia Meow) via Disqualification. Snow and Armstrong put on a wrestling clinic for the fans. Around the 8-minute mark, Snow gains the upper hand, but when he drops Armstrong with the Snow Plow, a move that is still banned in SMW, referee Earl Hebner immediately calls for the bell, and disqualifies Snow. The announcers mention that he’ll be fined as well for using a banned move. Snow throws a fit after the decision is announced. He grabs Hebner and tosses him to the mat, then hits Armstrong with another Snow Plow for good measure, before storming off. ---NWA World Heavyweight Champion TERRY FUNK joins Les and Lance at the broadcast podium. Funk talks about the match coming up with Buddy Landel later today, and says that he’s going to leave the ring with both belts. --- MATCH #2: JERRY LAWLER & THE STEINER BROTHERS fought THE BRUISE BROTHERS & UNABOMB (w/ Jim Cornette & Dutch Mantell) to a Double Disqualification. This match is a wild one, right from the opening bell. The six men brawl inside, and outside, of the ring early on. As Scott brawls with Unabomb on the floor, Dutch Mantell takes the chain that Unabomb carries to the ring, and prepares to hit Scott, but Rick comes up behind Mantell and drops him with a clothesline to the back of the head. However, this distracts Scott, allowing Unabomb to get the upper hand and pummel Scott until Rick makes the save and rolls Unabomb back into the ring. Within the next few minutes, the match has completely deteriorated, and the referee has lost all control. Not only has Unabomb’s chain made it’s way into the ring, but a chair and a table find their way into the action as well! Rick Steiner ends up being thrown through the table, as it is set up in the corner, while Lawler delivers a Piledriver to one of the Harris brothers, right into the steel chair! The referee realizes that there’s no way he’s going to get this under control, and he calls for the bell. The match has been thrown out, and both teams disqualified. That doesn’t matter to the wrestlers, though, they continue to brawl, eventually moving to the floor, and down the aisle to the back. ---LANCE and LES are joined at the broadcast area by Smoky Mountain Champion BUDDY LANDEL, along with AL SNOW and LEIA MEOW. SNOW talks about what happened earlier, saying that Smoky Mountain Wrestling can’t stop him from using the Snow Plow, they can fine him all they want, but it won’t change anything. LANDEL then talks about the match coming up with NWA Champ Terry Funk. Landel says that this is the match he’s been waiting for, and says that by the time the show goes off the air today, the fans will have a World Champion that they can look up, instead of a piece of trash like Terry Funk. --- MATCH #3 BEST 2 OUT OF 3 FALLS: NWA World Television Champion CHRIS CANDIDO beats BRAD ARMSTRONG 2 Falls to 1. The first fall went back and forth early on, but Armstrong eventually gained the upper hand, and hit the Russian Legsweep for the pinfall at the 8-minute mark. In the second fall, Armstrong really turned up the pressure, looking to put Candido away in two straight falls, and earn another shot at the NWA title. It isn’t Armstrong’s day, though, as he was counted out after DUTCH MANTELL came out and posted Brad outside the ring, while Candido distracted referee Earl Hebner inside the ring. Mantell stays out at ringside for the rest of the match, cheering Candido on. Armstrong is still groggy when the third fall starts, and Candido takes advantage, taking Armstrong down to the mat, and wearing him down. Candido goes for a Figure-4 Leglock, but Armstrong kicks him off, sending Candido into the turnbuckles. Stunned, Candido staggers out of the corner, with Armstrong rolling him up for a VERY close nearfall! Dutch Mantell again proves to the deciding factor in this fall, as he gets up on the ring apron and distracts Armstrong. Brad goes over, and grabs Landel by the shirt collar. This gets the referee’s attention, allowing Candido to pull what looks like a roll of coins, wrapped in tape, and he clobbers Armstrong in the back of the head with the foreign object. He tosses the object out of the ring, to Mantell, before the referee sees it, then Candido goes to the top rope and hits the New Jersey Jam legdrop for the 1, 2, 3! Chris Candido wins the third fall, and has stolen a victory from Brad Armstrong! ---STAN LANE conducts a ringside interview with CHRIS CANDIDO and DUTCH MANTELL. Mantell congratulates Candido, and the two men shake hands, before Dutch offers his managerial services to Candido. Candido takes only a second to consider it, then tells Dutch he’s got a deal, and they shake hands again. Dutch says that next week, Candido will beat whoever wins in the main event today, and become the new NWA World Champion! VS. --- MATCH #4 TITLE VS TITLE, WINNER TAKES ALL: NWA World Heavyweight Champion TERRY FUNK VS. Smoky Mountain Champion BUDDY LANDEL. Prior to the start of the match, the referee sends AL SNOW and LEIA MEOW away from ringside, which causes Landel to throw a fit! The action is fast and furious, as both wrestlers give it their all, looking to leave the ring with the biggest prize in this sport, the NWA World Heavyweight Title. Landel uses some underhanded tactics to gain an early advantage, but Funk eventually turns the tables. Terry’s advantage is short-lived though, as Landel hits a low blow that stops the NWA Champ dead in his tracks, and Landel once again takes over. Late in the match, after a series of very close nearfalls from Landel, Funk avoids an elbowdrop, then pulls Landel up, and hits him with several jabs, that leave the Smoky Mountain Champ dazed, then Funk whips Landel into the ropes, runs the opposite ropes himself, and delivers a vicious Lariat. From there, Funk pulls Landel up, cinches him up, and drops the Nature Boy on his head with a Piledriver! The fans in attendance errupt as Funk goes for the cover, but Al Snow and Jim Cornette rush to ringside and distract both the referee and Funk. Snow gets up on the ring apron, but Funk knocks him back to the floor with a big right hand. Cornette then gets on the apron, and Funk grabs him, and flips him into the ring! As the fans cheer him on, Funk locks Cornette in the FUNK SPINNING TOEHOLD! Cornette screams in agony as Funk applies the pressure. Landel gets back to his feet, and runs the ropes, but Funk lets go of Cornette, and ducks Landel’s clothesline attempt, then spins Landel around, kicks him in the gut, and delivers another Piledriver! Cornette, still in agony, rolls out of the ring as Funk covers Landel for the 1, 2, 3! TERRY FUNK HAS BEATEN BUDDY LANDEL, AND UNIFIES THE NWA AND SMOKY MOUNTAIN TITLES!!!FUNK celebrates in the ring, then he’s joined by LES THATCHER at ringside for an interview. Funk actually praises Landel as one of the toughest challengers he’s ever faced. The entire babyface locker room comes out and celebrates with Funk. ---LES THATCHER and LANCE RUSSELL wrap things up, and hype next week’s show, which will be the final episode of Smoky Mountain Wrestling, and will feature NWA Champion Terry Funk defending the title against NWA TV Champ Chris Candido!
