“CANADIAN ALL-STAR WRESTLING”
Broadcast on Saturday, May 19, 1984 on CBC affiliates across Canada
Taped earlier in the day at the Civic Centre in Brantford, Ontario
Opening Clip:
. . . Bravo says that he thought he was clear with Heenan last week, that he doesn’t need, or want, him as a manager. He says that, sure Heenan’s been very successful, but he doesn’t agree with Heenan’s methods, the fact that he demands his men take every shortcut they can, and he doesn’t share Heenan’s opinion of these fans. He says that the support of these great fans is what drives him, and he could never stand for Heenan running them down.
The smile fades from Bobby’s face, and he gets angry!
He says that he knows Dino’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so he’ll lay it out for him, nice and simple, so Bravo can understand . . . Dino can either join him, or get steamrolled by the Heenan Family!
BRAVO SLUGS HEENAN RIGHT IN THE MOUTH, KNOCKING BOBBY TO THE FLOOR!!!!
Bravo then grabs the contract that Heenan was holding, and TEARS IT UP!!! He throws the pieces on the floor, then walks off.
Billy Red Lyons, Ed Whalen and Pat Patterson are seated at the announce desk. They welcome us to “Canadian All-Star Wrestling”!
Lyons, Whalen and Patterson talk about the altercation last week between International champ Dino Bravo and Bobby Heenan. Lyons says that Heenan’s charge, the Masked Superstar has challenged Bravo to a match, and the CWF promoters are working to get that match signed. As well, Bravo will be in action right here today.
Whalen wonders if Bravo has made a mistake. Not only does Heenan already have the Masked Superstar, a man who enjoys inflicting as much pain as possible on his opponents, in his stable, but men like Bobby Duncum and Ken Patera, who have had an association with Heenan in the past, have signed on to appear in the CWF. He says that Heenan may have deserved what he got last week, but if we know Bobby Heenan, he’s not going to let this go unpunished.
Lyons says that Whalen may be right, only time will tell. He then runs down some of the other wrestlers that we’ll see on today’s show, and sends us to the ring for the first match.
PAUL ORNDORFF defeats NICK DECARLO (FA). Orndorff makes his way out for the match . . . and look who he’s got with him . . . Bobby “the Brain” Heenan. Heenan gets on the house mic before the bell rings, and says that he’s building his stable, he’s got the Masked Superstar and now Paul Orndorff, and says that things are about to get very unpleasant for Dino Bravo! Orndorff pounces on DeCarlo as soon as the bell rings, and gives him a beating. A few minutes in, DeCarlo mounts a short comeback, but in the end, Orndorff drops DeCarlo on his head with the Piledriver, and gets the pinfall by placing one foot on DeCarlo’s chest!
Lyons, Whalen and Patterson talk about the first of four Canadian title tournaments that took place last Saturday night at the world-famous Forum in Montreal. We’ll see an edited version of the tournament final as our main event here today, between Rick Martel and Bobby Duncum!
The second tournament will take place tonight at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Next Saturday night they’ll be at the Olympic Saddledome in Calgary for the third tournament, and then the Saturday after that at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver.
NON-TITLE MATCH:
DINO BRAVO vs. THE MASKED TERRORIST. The match never gets started, as Bravo is jumped by the Masked Superstar before he can even enter the ring! Superstar pummels Bravo on the floor, sends him head-first into the ringpost, then rolls him into the ring.
Inside the ring, the Superstar picks up the dazed International champ, and drops him with the corkscrew Neckbreaker! From there, Superstar takes Dino’s International title belt, and repeatedly smashes Bravo in the head with it!
Superstar then pulls Bravo up, and Dino’s wearing the crimson mask! For the viewing audience at home, CBC puts a big “X” over Bravo’s face every time the camera gets close!
The sadistic masked man continues to pound away at Bravo, who’s covered in blood, and not even able to defend himself. At this point, Dewey Robertson, Rick Martel, Rocky Johnson and the Rougeau brothers hit the ring and chase the Superstar off.
The damage has been done, though, and Bravo has to be helped to the back, as he’s unable to stand on his own.
THE MIDNIGHT EXPRESS: BOBBY EATON & DENNIS CONDREY (w/ Jim Cornette) defeat TONY PARISI & TOM ZENK. Parisi and Zenk, the veteran and the youngster, give the MX a tough time here. Parisi very nearly gets the win after the Cannonball from the top rope on Condrey, but Eaton broke up the count. The MX eventually take over, and the get the win when Eaton pins Zenk after the Rocket Launcher.
Pat Patterson talks with Cornette, Eaton and Condrey at ringside after the match. Cornette brings up the comments made by the Rougeau brothers two weeks ago, and says that he got a good laugh, the Rougeaus actually think they’d be competition for the Midnight Express? He says it would be more like a warm-up before facing REAL competition! Cornette says that if the Rougeaus really want to get humiliated in front of all of their fellow Canadians, Eaton and Condrey would be happy to oblige them!
TAPED ON 5/12/84 IN MONTREAL, QUEBEC, JIP:
RICK MARTEL defeats BOBBY DUNCUM. We join the match at around the 8-minute mark. Duncum has the upper hand, and Martel is in a bad way. Duncum is just toying with Martel, every time Rick gets up to his knees, Duncum kicks him back down to the mat. The tables turn, though, when Duncum pulls Martel up, whips him into the ropes, and bounces off the opposite ropes, attempting a running clothesline. Martel ducks the move, and then rebounds off the ropes and as Duncum turns around, Martel catches him with a diving forearm smash! Before Martel can go for the pin, Duncum rolls out of the ring and takes a moment to clear the cobwebs on the floor. Martel goes out after him, and they trade punches on the floor. Duncum gets the upper hand, and sends Martel’s head into the ring apron.
Duncum then climbs back into the ring, and yells at the ref to count Martel out! Rick slowly climbs up on the apron. Duncum charges at him, but Martel slingshots himself over the top rope, over top of Duncum . . . and into a sunset flip! Duncum is caught completely off-guard, and Martel gets the 1, 2, 3!
Rick Martel has won the first Canadian title tournament!!!! He’ll move onto the semi-finals, which will take place on TV in June!
Lyons, Whalen and Patterson all congratulate Martel on being the first wrestler to move onto the semi-finals of the Canadian title tournament, and then wrap up the show.
