Airing: Friday, June 22, ESPN
Las Vegas, Nevada
---The show begins with a highlight package from the Festival of Champions in Phoenix, Arizona----
Gene Okerlund: welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. Last Sunday evening was one the wildest nights of wrestling we’ve witnessed in many years. As you saw from the video montage, Roddy Piper retained the world heavyweight championship in a very controversial match in which Jake Roberts pinned Roddy Piper but the referee was knocked out and unable to make the three count. Roddy Piper then rallied and was able to retain his title. After the match, Jake Roberts, in a fit of rage, attacked the referee and ring personnel. While Roberts had reason to be upset, he crossed the line by assaulting a licensed UWE referee. Here to talk about that match and many other happenings in the UWE is Commissioner Lord James Blears.
Lord James Blears: The first Festival of Champions was an incredible success and the good news for wrestling fans is that we have three more Festivals planned for this Summer. The next Festival will be in Portland, Oregon on July 15, then Denver, Colorado on August 12, and we end the series in Los Angeles on September 2. We have some great matches lined up for our Portland card. Let me announce some of those matches today:
· Greg Valentine will get a rematch against his hated rival Magnum TA, this time in a no-disqualification matc;
· With their victory over the Sheepherders, the Killer Bees have earned a shot at the world tag-team champions the Wild Samoans;
· Junkyard Dog and Colonel Debeers will meet again in a continuation of their war from Phoenix;
· Portland star Bully Jack Haynes meets Bad News Allen;
· Tito Santana will face Al Perez
· Jimmy Snuka meets the tough cowboy Ron Bass;
· The Rock and Roll Express and the Sheepherders will try to get back into the world title picture as they face each other;
· Roddy Piper will defend his title against an opponent we will reveal on next week’s program.
Let me address one more matter. The UWE Competition Committee was at the Phoenix card and we have also reviewed video replays of the matches. During the course of the world heavyweight title match, Jake Roberts pinned Roddy Piper in the ring but there was not a referee to make the count. Jake Roberts does have a point of contention as he arguably should be world champion right now. We can’t go back in time but we can look forward to the future. Based on what happened in Phoenix, Jake Roberts will maintain his status as the #1 contender for the world heavyweight title. However, Jake Roberts will also face disciplinary actions for his attack on a UWE referee. That is simply not allowed and there must be consequences to protect the brave men who officiate our matches. As Commissioner, I am giving Jake Roberts a 30-day suspension from UWE competition. Mr. Roberts is banned from competing at Festival of Champions II in Portland on July 15 as it will still be during his suspension period.
Finally, we are scheduled to host Festival of Champions III in Denver, Colorado on August 12. We are going to do something a little different for this card. At the Festival in Denver, UWE will promote the first BLOCKBUSTER BATTLE, an innovative match like nothing you’ve seen before in pro wrestling. We will announce details of this big match on our program next week.
Gene Okerlund: Our Commissioner with a number of huge announcements and so many questions left to be answered. Who will face Roddy Piper in Portland on August 12? What is the BLOCKBUSTER BATTLE? Never a dull moment here in the UWE! Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening. Take it away Rod Trongard and Dutch Mantell.
Match #1
Playboy Buddy Rose and Doug Sommers defeat Los Villanos (FA) via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: An impressive win for the duo of Rose and Sommers who are working hard to get in the tag-team title picture. On last week’s program, Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis had a tough match with Billy Jack Haynes where he retained the title with help from Freddie Blassie. This is becoming a common occurrence, Adonis gets in trouble and Blassie interferes. Joining us now is Hollywood Televisions Champion Adrian Adonis and his manager Classy Freddie Blassie.
Champ, next week you are scheduled to defend your title against a newcomer here in the promotion who is already making a name for himself, Jesse Barr. How will prepare for this tough contest?
Classy Freddie Blassie: He’s going to prepare the same way he always does, he’ll prepare to win. Too many people out here making excuses, saying they would have won the match if not for this or that. The only people who make excuses are losers, the pencil-necked geeks. Anyone who comes and tries to take the title off this man, you will suffer the fate of all those who have come before you: you will leave the ring as nothing but a loser.
Adrian Adonis: I don’t care if it’s Billy Jack Haynes, Jesse Barr, it don’t matter to me. None of those boys has what it takes to compete with this East Coast attitude. Next week on this card, Jesse Barr and you people watching on television are going to see: there ain’t no one who can beat the man from New York City.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: As we learned in our last segment, Junkyard Dog and Colonel Debeers are booked to meet again at the Festival of Champions in Portland. The two fought to a double-countout in Phoenix. Here to talk about his rematch is Junkyard Dog.
Junkyard Dog: During our fight down in Phoenix, Colonel Debeers tried to use my dog collar and chain. Tried to take my stuff and use it against me. You like this chain so much Debeers, then I have a challenge for you. You and I in a dog collar match at the Festival in Portland. Strapped together by this chain, there will be no more running, no hiding, it’s you and I tied together till the last man is left standing. There ain’t no way you’re beating the dog in his own match. You man enough to back up all that talk, Debeers?
Gene Okerlund: A huge challenge from Junkyard Dog to Colonel Debeers, asking for him to accept the stipulation that the match in Portland will be a dog collar match. Wow! We’ll have to see if the Colonel is up to the challenge. In our next contest, we have a great tag-team match as the Rising Stars meet the team of Maniac Matt Bourne and Ron Starr.
Match #2
The Rising Stars (Brett Sawyer and Kendall Windham) defeat Matt Bourne and Ron Starr via pinfall. After the match, the Army of Darkness comes to the ring and Kevin Sullivan starts his odd chanting aimed at Brett Sawyer. Sawyer is obviously flustered as Windham forcefully moves him out of the ring and to the back.
Gene Okerlund: The Army of Darkness is targeting Brett Sawyer for some reason. We’ll see how this develops. It was announced earlier tonight that Jimmy Snuka will be taking on the despicable Cowboy Ron Bass at the Festival in Portland. We are joined now by Jimmy Superfly Snuka.
You had a big win against Bad News Allen in Phoenix. Things don’t get easier though as you are scheduled to meet Ron Bass at our next Festival?
Jimmy Snuka: Of course things don’t get easier. This is the UWE, the premier promotion in wrestling. If you expect easy, go wrestle somewhere else, brother. Bad News Allen is big, he’s tough, but he was no match for me in Phoenix. I studied and prepared, and then on match night, I executed my plan to perfection. The way that match ended, with a superfly splash and a pin count, that’s the same fate in store for Ron Bass. You’ll need more than your bullrope if you hope to keep up with me. I have something better, I have the fans, the inspiration they give me. And it’s that inspiration that will lead me to another victory in Portland.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: In our last segment, you heard Junkyard Dog challenge Colonel Debeers to a dog-collar match in Portland. Here to respond to that challenge is Colonel Debeers:
Colonel Debeers: So this savage wants to challenge me to a dog-collar match? He wants me to be linked by a chain to someone like him? Junkyard Dog is someone who has a lot of experience with these chains. That experience won’t matter. As much I hate to soil myself by being tied to someone like him, I’ve never turned down a challenge. This will be yet another opportunity to to put Junkyard Dog and his people in their place. I am superior and that will come through again when we meet in Portland.
Gene Okerlund: Colonel Debeers accepts the challenge and will meet Junkyard Dog in a dog-collar match at the Festival in Portland. Let’s head to the ring for our next match of the night
Match #3
Ron Bass defeats Scott Casey via pinfall when he uses his bullrope out of sight of the ref and covers for the pin.
Gene Okerlund: One the biggest feuds in wrestling is happening right here in the UWE between Magnum TA and Greg Valentine. Magnum got the better of Valentine in Phoenix but the two are scheduled to go at it once again in Portland. Joining us now to talk about his big matches is Magnum TA.
Magnum TA: Thank you Gene and thank you to all the fans out there who continue to support me. I knew that fight in Phoenix was going to be tough, Valentine is an accomplished wrestler. But like I said, I’m an accomplished wrestler and knew what needed to be done to take him down. He’ll be coming for revenge when we meet in Portland but I’ll be ready to take him down again….
---Greg Valentine appears out of nowhere and attacks Magnum. Gene Okerlund quickly backs away as Valentine assaults TA. Valentine grabs the mic from the floor.
Greg Valentine: You got lucky! Nothing but lucky! Your luck has run out, son.
--Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: What an outrageous attack by Greg Valentine on Magnum TA in our last segment. Magnum is being tended to by our medical staff. We’ll update you on his status next week. We are now joined by the heavyweight champion of the world, Roddy Piper.
Champ, an interesting match at the Festival of Champions in Phoenix. Now, you are facing a mystery opponent in Portland. What are your thoughts on all this?
Roddy Piper: My thoughts are this Mean Gene: I am still the world heavyweight champion. Jake Roberts put up a good fight, make no doubt about that, jack. But what he didn’t do was win this world title. Now he’s suspended for 30 days? That suspension is the best thing to ever happen o him. That suspension means he won’t have to keep losing those matches every time he challenges for this title. Now there’s some mystery opponent who will be challenging for this belt in Portland. Unless it’s Clyde Drexler himself, I ain’t worried about a thing. Being world champion means you take on all challengers, even mystery challengers from the mind of Lord James Blears. For Jake Roberts, for the mystery man, listen up and listen real good: no one is taking this title from me.
Gene Okerlund: The World Champion is making no excuses and is ready to take on all challengers. Let’s get to the ring for our huge main event as Tito Santana takes on Bad News Allen.
Match #4
Bad News Allen defeats Tito Santana when he grabs a handful of tights during a pinfall, giving him the advantage he needs for the three-count.
Gene Okerlund: That’s all for this week wrestling fans. Tune in next time as we will get more information about the Blockbuster Battle being held in Denver on ___, we will learn who is facing Roddy Piper for the world title at the Festival in Portland, and we have a big main event as Hollywood Television Champion defends his title against Jesse Barr.
---End of television show---
Matches not taped for TV.
Match #5
Billy Jack Haynes and Colonel Debeers battle to a double-countout
Match #6
Killer Bees defeat the Army of Darkness via pinfall.
Match #7
Rock and Roll Express and Jimmy Snuka defeat the Wild Samoans and Greg Valentine via pinfall when outside interference by Captain Lou Albano backfires.
