“CANADIAN ALL-STAR WRESTLING”
Broadcast on Saturday, May 12, 1984 on CBC affiliates across Canada
Taped earlier in the day at the Auditorium in Verdun, Quebec
Billy Red Lyons, Ed Whalen and Pat Patterson are seated at the announce desk. They welcome us to “Canadian All-Star Wrestling”!
We’re in Verdun, just outside Montreal, where in just a few hours, eight of the top stars in wrestling will square off at the world-famous Forum, in the first of four Canadian title tournaments! One of the favourites to win not only tonight’s tournament, but the Canadian title as well, Rick Martel, will be in action today!
We’ll also see the Hart brothers, Bret and Bruce, in action, and the Masked Superstar will be here!
.
Bobby Heenan joins Lyons, Whalen and Patterson at the announce desk.
Heenan has some papers with him, and says that he’s got everything written up, ready for Dino Bravo to sign. Lyons mentions that Bravo was quite clear last week, that he didn’t want anything to do with Heenan. Bobby says that Bravo’s had a week to think about it, and he knows that he’ll make the right decision.
International champion Dino Bravo then makes his way out to the desk.
Heenan is all smiles, and says that he’s got the contract here, all it needs is Bravo’s signature, and then he’ll go straight to the top of the wrestling world!
Bravo says that he thought he was clear with Heenan last week, that he doesn’t need, or want, him as a manager. He says that, sure Heenan’s been very successful, but he doesn’t agree with Heenan’s methods, the fact that he demands his men take every shortcut they can, and he doesn’t share Heenan’s opinion of these fans. He says that the support of these great fans is what drives him, and he could never stand for Heenan running them down.
The smile fades from Bobby’s face, and he gets angry!
He says that he knows Dino’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so he’ll lay it out for him, nice and simple, so Bravo can understand . . . Dino can either join him, or get steamrolled by the Heenan Family!
BRAVO SLUGS HEENAN RIGHT IN THE MOUTH, KNOCKING BOBBY TO THE FLOOR!!!!
Bravo then grabs the contract that Heenan was holding, and TEARS IT UP!!! He throws the pieces on the floor, then walks off.
The Masked Superstar comes out and helps Heenan up, and to the back.
RICK MARTEL[/b] defeats SCRAP IRON SCRANTON (FA)[/b]. The announcers put Martel over big-time on commentary, and call him one of the favourites to win the Canadian title. Martel makes short work of Scranton, locking on the Boston Crab for the submission.
THE MASKED SUPERSTAR[/b] defeats NICK DECARLO (FA)[/b]. Heenan isn’t with the Superstar, and the masked man is in a foul mood after what happened to Heenan earlier. He takes it out on poor Nick DeCarlo, throwing him around like a ragdoll before delivering the swinging neckbreaker for the pinfall. The Superstar hits a second neckbreaker after the bell, for good measure, and DeCarlo has to be stretchered from the ring.
The Superstar then takes the house mic from Norm Kimber, and says he hopes Dino Bravo was watching, because we just got a glimpse into Bravo’s future.
We go to CWF President Gene Kiniski seated behind a desk in his office. Kiniski has two championship belts on his desk in front of him, the brand new Canadian Tag Team title belts. Gene says that, as well as crowning a new Canadian heavyweight champion on Canada Day in Ottawa, there will be a match to crown the Canadian Tag Team champions as well! He says that they’re still working on which teams will be involved, but Canadian Tag Team champs will be crowned on July 1 at Lansdowne Park.
THE HART BROTHERS: BRET & BRUCE[/b] defeat THE MASKED TERRORISTS[/b]. Bruce got the win for the brothers, connecting with a diving clothesline for the pinfall. During the match, Whalen talks about his time with the Hart family in Calgary’s Stampede Wrestling, and says that they are fine, upstanding young men.
Gino Brito is backstage with Rick Martel. Martel talks about how great it is to have wrestling back on television in Canada, particularly in Quebec, and he hopes the fans will come out and support the CWF when they come to town. He then talks about the tournament tonight at the Forum, saying that he always tries his best every time out, but tonight will be special, as he’s in his home province, at the Forum, one of the most historic arenas in the world, and a place where he’s had some of his greatest matches! He believes that tonight is his night, and he wants all the fans to come out to the Forum and cheer him on.
Before the main event, we hear some pre-recorded comments from some of the other participants in tonight’s tournament, including Raymond Rougeau, Tully Blanchard and Bobby Duncum.
BOBBY DUNCUM[/b] defeat DEWEY ROBERTSON[/b] by Count-out. Dewey’s got a shaved head, and on commentary, Billy Red says that Dewey’s no longer “missing”, and says that the shaved head is a definite improvement from the hairstyle he had the last time Lyons saw him, wrestling down around Louisiana.
Dewey is a rugged veteran, who can hang with the toughest men in the sport, and he goes toe to toe with the big Texan here. Eventually the battle moves to the arena floor, where Duncum gets the upper hand, and connects with a vicious Lariat! With Dewey down and out on the floor, Duncum slides back into the ring, picking up the win by Count-out.
Lyons, Patterson and Whalen are joined again by Bobby “the Brain” Heenan. Heenan’s holding an icepack to his jaw. Bobby says that Dino Bravo made a grave mistake! Dino’s made a very powerful enemy, and he says that he won’t be happy with just taking Bravo’s International title . . . he’s going to end Bravo’s career!
Lyons, Whalen and Patterson wrap things up, and hype next week’s show.
