Sanctioned by the Canadian Wrestling Federation
“CANADIAN ALL-STAR WRESTLING”
Broadcast on Saturday, May 5, 1984 on CBC affiliates across Canada
Taped on May 1 at the Civic Centre in Brantford, Ontario
Billy Red Lyons, Ed Whalen and Pat Patterson are seated at the announce desk. They welcome us to “Canadian All-Star Wrestling”!
Lyons says that it’s the dawning of a new era in Canadian professional wrestling! As we heard Gene Kiniski talk about last week, when the World Wrestling Federation closed it’s doors, it left most of Canada without big-time professional wrestling. Well, that is no longer the case, as the Canadian Wrestling Federation can be seen right across Canada, right here on the CBC, and fans across the country will have the opportunity to see the stars of the CWF live when they come to their city!
Last week, we heard the announcement, that four tournaments will take place across Canada . . . one each in Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. The winners of those four tournaments will move onto semi final matches that will air right here on TV in June. The winners of those matches will meet one on one at Lansdowne Park in the nation’s capital on July 1 to crown a new Canadian heavyweight champion!
The first tournament will take place next Saturday night, May 12, at the Forum in Montreal, and among the participants in that tournament will be former International champion Rick Martel, as well as the Rougeau brothers, Jacques and Raymond, Tully Blanchard and Mad Dog Lefebvre!
Whalen says that, to ensure we get four different winners from the tournaments, the winner of each tournament will not take part in the remaining tournaments, so for instance, if Rick Martel is victorious in the tournament in Montreal next Saturday, he won’t be a part of the remaining three.
Lyons says that we’ll also have news in the coming weeks regarding the Canadian Tag Team titles, and as we saw on the debut show last week, Dino Bravo has been named the inaugural CWF International heavyweight champion. Bravo was the reigning International champion in Montreal prior of the WWF taking over, and since he was never defeated for the belt, the CWF promoters and championship committee felt he deserved to continue his reign as champion.
At that point, they’re interrupted by Bobby “the Brain” Heenan. Bobby says that for the fans up here who don’t know who he is, he’ll enlighten them. He’s the Brain, the smartest man in this sport and the greatest manager professional wrestling has ever seen. He’s had more success, and managed more champions than any other manager in the history of the sport, and he’s about to add the International champion to that list!
Lyons is confused, and asks him if that means he’s managing . . .
Heenan cuts him off, and says that’s right, he’s out here to bring the International champion DINO BRAVO into his “Family”!
Lyons and Whalen are speechless, but Pat Patterson says he’s known Dino Bravo for years, and he knows that Bravo is a man of honour and integrity, he would never have anything to do with the likes of Heenan.
Dino Bravo makes his way out, though he looks just as confused as Whalen and Lyons.
Heenan says that he will make Dino Bravo the cornerstone of his Family, and with Heenan’s guidance, there’ll be no stopping Bravo! He says Bravo can reach a level of success and popularity that those old dinosaurs like Gene Kiniski, Yvon Robert and Whipper Billy Watson could only dream about!
Bravo doesn’t even consider it, he tells Heenan that he’s done just fine on his own, and as long as he’s got these fans in his corner, that’s all he needs.
Heenan, visibly flustered, tells Bravo he doesn’t have to make up his mind right now, take some time to think it over, and Heenan will have the paperwork drawn up and all ready for Bravo to sign next week.
Heenan then leaves the announce area as we head to a commercial break.
TULLY BLANCHARD defeats NICK DECARLO (FA). DeCarlo is no slouch, and he holds his own against Blanchard early on, but Tully soon takes over, and eventually connects with the Slingshot Suplex for the pinfall victory.
After the match, Pat Patterson comes over and joins Tully at ringside. Blanchard talks about the Canadian title tournament and says none of the other wrestlers in the CWF are even in his league, and his winning the title is a foregone conclusion. Patterson says that this arrogance certainly won’t endear him to the Canadian fans. Tully asks him if he really thinks Blanchard cares what a bunch of moose farmers and lumberjacks think of him? He says that these fans should consider themselves lucky if, after he wins the Canadian title, he doesn’t take it and head home to Texas!
JAY YOUNGBLOOD defeats TITO SENZA (FA). Youngblood is impressive here, as he soundly defeats Senza, pinning him after the flying tomahawk chop.
After the match, Patterson talks with Youngblood at ringside. Youngblood says that he’s a lot of Native brothers and sisters in Canada, and he hopes that they’ll come out and support him, along with all the great Canadian fans, when he takes part in the Canadian title tournament. Youngblood then talks about Tully’s comments earlier, and says that if he ends up facing Tully in the tournament, he’d be more than happy to shut him up!
Lyons, Whalen and Patterson are joined by Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express: Bobby Eaton & Dennis Condrey. Cornette, in his inimitable, machine-gun style, runs down Canada, the fans, and the Canadian wrestlers. He then introduces his team, “Beautiful” Bobby and “Loverboy” Dennis, the Midnight Express! He says that, normally, Bobby and Dennis enjoy the attention of all the women around the world who regularly throw themselves at them, but these Canadian women, they’re bigger and hairier than Bobby and Dennis! He says that looking around at these women here today, they remind him of another Canadian, Jos LeDuc . . . only uglier!
Cornette says that his team have revolutionized tag team wrestling, they’ve won so many tag team titles that he’s lost count, and says that the CWF might as well save these other tag teams around here the embarrassment, and just give them the Canadian Tag titles right now!
Cornette sticks around and continues to insult the Canadian fans, while Eaton and Condrey head to the ring for the next match.
THE MIDNIGHT EXPRESS: BOBBY EATON & DENNIS CONDREY defeat BOB & JOE MARCUS (FA). The MX dominate the match, and put Joe Marcus away with the Veg-O-Matic.
DEWEY ROBERTSON & “SOULMAN” ROCKY JOHNSON & GEORGE WELLS defeat MAD DOG LEFEBVRE & THE MASKED TERRORISTS. On commentary, they really hype the popular babyface team. Lyons talks about Dewey and Rocky growing up in Hamilton and Toronto respectively, and says that they’ve both been very successful across Canada.
Patterson talks about Wells’ career in the Canadian Football League, where he played for both Toronto and Hamilton, winning a Grey Cup with the Ti-Cats (BOOOO!), and was a CFL All-Star in ’74. Lyons compares Wells to another CFL great, and former Ti-Cat, Angelo “King Kong” Mosca.
The match is a wild one, as Mad Dog Lefebvre lives up to his name, tearing into Dewey as soon as the match starts, even biting his forehead at one point! The face trio eventually turns the tables, and in the end, they get the win when Dewey forces one of the masked Terrorists to submit to the Figure-4 Leglock.
Gino Brito is backstage with Jacques & Raymond Rougeau. Brito mentions the comments made earlier in the show by Jim Cornette, and his statement that none of the other teams in the CWF can compete with his Midnight Express.
Raymond laughs, and says that there are plenty of great tag teams coming to the CWF, the Hart boys from Calgary for one, and says that Jim Cornette might want to watch his mouth because there are plenty of people around here who would be more than happy to shut it for him!
Jacques says if Cornette wants competition for his team, he and Ray would be happy to get in the ring with them.
Lyons, Whalen and Patterson wrap things up, and hype next week’s show.
