FESTIVAL OF CHAMPIONS I
Sunday, June 17, 1984
Veteran's Memorial Coliseum
Phoenix, Arizona
Ring Announcer: Joe Blanchard
Referees: Dick Kroll, Joey Marella
Match #1
The Army of Darkness (Kevin Sullivan and Maha Singh) defeated the Rising Stars (Kendal Windham and Brett Sawyer) when Sullivan pined Sawyer. (8:03) After the match, Sullivan and Singh attempted to perform an odd ritual on Sawyer until Windham grabbed a chair and cleared the ring. Sawyer appeared dazed as he headed to the back with assistance from his partner.
Match #2
Tito Santana defeated Cowboy Ron Bass via disqualification when Bass grabbed his trusty bullrope and attacked Santana during the match. (10:24) The referee called for the bell but this didn’t stop Bass from continuing his assault on Santana. The popular Mexican star took an intense beating at the hands of Bass, who is finally escorted away by security.
Match #3
The Killer Bees w/ Jesse Barr defeated the Sheepherders w/ Jonathan Boyd via pinfall when Jim Brunzell pinned Luke Williams. (12:46) The match was a back and forth contest that saw the Bees gain the upper hand. Boyd attempted to get involved in the match but was prevented from doing so by Barr. This allowed Brunzell to land a running dropkick and cover for the pin. The Sheepherders were not thrilled with their defeat and let the Bees know this war is far from over.
Match #4
Colonel Debeers and Junkyard Dog battled to a double countout. (7:56) The two men have a wild match that saw the rulebook thrown out the window almost immediately. They each have a deep-rooted animosity for the other and it shows in the intensity of the battle. With the men battling at ringside, Debeers grabbed Dog’s dog collar and chain and attempted to strike him with it. JYD is able to get the chain back and chased Debeers to the back. He takes in the cheers from the crowd before leaving.
Match #5
Jimmy Snuka defeated Bad News Allen via pinfall. (9:06) Allen’s size and strength gave him the advantage from the outset of the match. Snuka, no slouch himself in the strength department, is able to gain a tactical advantage on Allen and eventually dropped the big man to the ground. Snuka climbed to the top rope and landed a superfly splash on Allen, then pinning him clean for the 1..2...3. An impressive outing for the Superfly who dispatched Allen with a clean pin.
---Intermission---
Match #6
Rock and Roll Express defeated the Wild Samoans w/ Captain Lou Albano via disqualification for outside interference. (13:40) The Samoans used their strength advantage to gain the upper hand. They worked over Ricky Morton hard, and it appeared the RRE were done. Morton managed to rally, and was able to make a hot tag to Gibson. Gibson came in and cleaned house. He had Afa on the ground when Captain Lou climbed to the ring apron and hit Gibson from behind. The referee had no choice but to ring the bell and call for a disqualification. Unfortunately, for the RRE, the belts stay with the Wild Samoans.
Match #7
Magnum TA defeated Greg Valentine via pinfall in a brutal match that saw TA land a belly to back suplex then pin Valentine. (22:56) The match saw both men gain periods of momentum. At one point, Valentine locked the figure four on Magnum. The referee checked on TA as he started to fade. Magnum was finally able to muster enough strength to make it the ring ropes, forcing Valentine to break. As he did he dropped another knee on Magnum's right leg. Valentine tried to put on the figure four again but Magnum managed to throw Valentine through the middle and top ropes to the outside. Magnum was pulled to the outside as well and the two men began to slug it out. Valentine hit Magnum with a right and he fell back against the ringpost. Valentine charged but Magnum moved and Valentine hit the post head first. Magnum picked up Buddy and threw him back into the ring. He climbed up on the apron and stepped through the ropes just as Valentine was making it to his feet. Valentine tried to hit TA with a right but Magnum ducked and delivered a dropkick knocking Valentine down. Magnum then delivered a belly to belly suplex and covered, getting the big win.
Both men were clearly exhausted after their brutal encounter and had to be helped to the back by medical personnel.
The crowd gave their approval for the match with sustained applause.
---Second intermission---
MAIN EVENT
UWE World Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper defeated Jake Roberts via pinfall. (20:25) During the match, as Piper was struggling to free himself from a Roberts attack in the corner, the referee was accidentally bumped and the force of the exchange propelled him out of the ring. As Piper was checking on the referee, Roberts landed a low blow. The stunned Piper was prey for a DDT. Roberts covered for the pin.1….2…3…4…Piper finally kicks out. Because the ref was incapacitated, he was unable to make the count when Roberts pinned Piper. A clearly frustrated Roberts berated the referee, grabbing him and throwing him back in the ring. The Snake then returned to his attack on Piper. The world champ used this downtime to catch a second wind and was able to counter the attack. He landed a knee drop which then set up a bulldog. Piper quickly covered for the pin as the ref groggily made the three count. Piper celebrated the win as Roberts protested furiously. The Snake’s anger continued to escalate and reached a boiling point as he attacked the referee, landing a few punches and then giving him a DDT. He then went after Piper. As security attempted to restore order, Roberts attacked anyone unlucky enough to step in the ring. Finally, Phoenix police arrived and forced Roberts to the back.
