UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, June 12
Airing: Friday, June 15, ESPN
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We are thrilled to have you with us this evening for another great night of wrestling action. On tonight’s program, Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis will defend his belt against Billy Jack Haynes in our main event. Also on the program, Greg Valentine will take on the popular cowboy Scott Casey, Superfly Jimmy Snuka meets Black Bart, and newcomer Jesse Bar battles Maniac Matt Bourne.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that we are just a few days away from Festival of Champions I on Sunday, June 17 in Phoenix, Arizona. The card is loaded with world class matches from top to bottom. This will be a night of wrestling you won’t want to miss. In our huge main event, UWE World Champion Roddy Piper will defend his belt against Jake Roberts. Last week, Jake Roberts perpetrated a vicious sneak attack against the world champion on this program. Against the wishes of our medical staff, Roddy Piper has demanded he be allowed to compete on Sunday night. He has met the minimum clearance levels and as such, the match will go forward. Joining us now to talk about his despicable actions is the main who will challenge for the world heavyweight title this Sunday night in Phoenix, Jake Roberts.
Jake Roberts: Despicable actions? The only despicable action I’m aware of is Roddy Piper coming out here pretending to be your world champion. The man who got help to win the title, the man who needed Magnum TA and Jimmy Snuka to steal the title, the only person engaging in despicable acts is the movie set champion Roddy Piper. You saw last week what happens when you take down a movie set: there’s nothing behind it. Nothing but a façade, an illusion. Your façade is coming to an end Piper as the movie set is coming down, and from the ashes will rise a true world champion.
Gene Okerlund: Jake Roberts is not backing down from his harsh words to Roddy Piper and is definitely not apologizing for his actions. It will be up to Piper to make Roberts pay this Sunday night. Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening. Jesse Barr debut on our program last week and will be in the corner of the Killer Bees this Sunday night as they face the Sheepheders. We’ll see Barr in action next. Let’s send you to our great broadcast team of Rod Trongard and Dutch Mantell.
Match #1
Jesse Barr defeats Matt Bourne via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: An impressive win by Jesse Barr who will likely have to play a role in the Killer Bees v. Sheepherders match on Sunday night. Don’t forget, the winner of that match will get a shot at the world tag-team championship. Here to talk more about Sunday night’s match are the Sheepherders and their manager Jonathan Boyd.
Jonathan Boyd: You think bringing in Jesse Barr is really going to even the score? There is no one equal to these madmen behind me. Butch Miller, Luke Williams, these two will take down the Killer Bees on Sunday night and earn a shot at the world tag-team championship. Adding Jesse Barr just means one thing: it’s another person for us to destroy on our way to the top. In the desert of Arizona, we will do what we’ve done all over the world, destroy our competition and show no mercy in doing so.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: One of our co-main events on Sunday night will feature Magnum TA taking on his rival Greg Valentine in what is sure to be a wild affair. Magnum and Valentine have been at each other’s throats since they arrived at the UWE. Both men are some of the toughest wrestlers in the business, so what happens Sunday night is anyone’s guess. Let’s welcome Magnum TA and hear what he has to say about his big match this weekend.
Magnum TA: You’re right about that Gene, Greg Valentine is one of the toughest wrestlers in our business. I’ve seen him defeat opponents all over the world. I know when I step into the ring with him on Sunday night, I better be at the top of my game. I’ve been preparing for this match for weeks, studied the ins and outs of his game. All that only takes you so far. Once we step in the ring, it won’t just be about preparation, it will be about heart, it will about guts. I fight for my family, for the fans in the arenas, for all of you watching on ESPN. You are the reason I put my body on the line and you are the reason that Sunday night, when that final bell rings, I’m the one who’ll have his hand raised.
Gene Okerlund: Magnum TA says it’s the fans who will give him that extra push he needs this Sunday night to beat Greg Valentine. Let’s go to the ring as the Hammer is in action in our next contest.
Match #2
Greg Valentine defeats Scott Casey via submission. Valentine locked Casey in a figure-four and refused to release the move despite the Cowboy’s submission. Magnum TA ran the ring to assist Casey. Security intervened and prevented the two from going at each other. Both men made threats against the other as they were escorted to the back.
Gene Okerlund: Magnum TA and Greg Valentine aren’t in the mood to wait untill Sunday night to settle their issues. They’re ready now! Another team that has a big match this Sunday is our world tag-team champions, the Wild Samoans, who are joined by their manager, Captain Lou Albano.
Captain Lou Albano: Sunday night, June 17th, in Phoenix, Arizona, will forever be known as the day rock and roll went away. You see, we don’t have that pretty hair, those flashy clothes. What my men have though is something far more valuable: they have brutality. These men have no guilt, no remorse, when they destroy their opponents. They know one thing and one thing only, how to beat the tar out of their opponents. These men are a wrll-oiled fighting machine and there is no way that some rock and roll wannabes are going to stand a chance against them. Tune in Sunday night, it will be the last time you’re able to see the Rock and Roll Express.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: We keep listing big match after big match for the Festival of Champions. One of the matches on the top of everyone’s list is the bout between Superfly Jimmy Snuka and Bad News Allen. Ever since they went at it during the world title battle royal, the two men have been gunning for each other. Joining us now to talk about his match at the Festival of Champions is Bad News Allen.
Bad News Allen: Look here, Snuka. You may think you’re a high flyer, diving off the top of cages. That may impress some people but it don’t mean a thing to me. You see, where I’m from, the street, the hood, the ghetto, we don’t care about no man jumping around like a damn fool. We care about whether you can fight or not, whether you can put up them fists and fight like a man. I already know the answer for your Snuka: you ain’t no man who can stand up to me. This Sunday night, all that jumping around ain’t gonna mean a thing jack. You are in for the beating of your life son.
Gene Okerlund: Strong words from Bad News Allen who promises to take the fight right to Snuka on Sunday night. The Superfly is in action in our next bout.
Match #3
Jimmy Snuka defeated Black Bart via pinfall with a superfly splash and pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Superfly Jimmy Snuka showed us in that last contest that he’s ready for his big match on Sunday night. One of the most intense feuds in the UWE has been between Junkyard Dog and Colonel Debeers, who have engaged in a war of words for weeks now. The two men will meet on Sunday night. Let’s hear from Colonel Debeers.
Colonel Debeers: Where do I lodge a protest that I have to step in the ring with someone like the Junkyard Dog. We should not have to compete with people like that, to soil ourselves with his wretchedness. In my country, we have rules to prevent his sort of atrocity. People know their place. Because your country doesn’t have these same rules, I’ll have to make my own. I will teach Junkyard Dog on Sunday night why I am far superior, I will put him in his rightful place. Then, maybe the UWE will see why people like him shouldn’t be allowed in the ring with superior specimens like me.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: We’ve talked about it over and over, you seen the tension boiling. This Sunday night, it’s Roddy Piper v. Jake Roberts for the world heavyweight championship. Here with the last word is the man wearing the heavyweight title belt, Rowdy Roddy Piper.
Champ, with the attack by Roberts last week, will you be ready and able to compete this Sunday night?
Roddy Piper: You are damn right I’ll be ready! You think one sneak attack, one beating is going to keep me down?!? I’m a lot tougher than you must think I am Geno. Roberts has run his mouth week after week. He makes all sorts of claims that I don’t deserve this title. He thinks he’s some Hollywood producer talking about movie sets all the time. You like movies so much Roberts, this Sunday night when you step in the ring with me you’re going to see the perfect movie production. A mix of action, horror, heck, even some comedy as I laugh at you laying on the ground as a pin you 1…2…3. For all the fans out there in TV world, I guarantee you this, on Sunday night, Jake the Snake Roberts gets what’s coming to him. This movie on Sunday night won’t have a happy ending for Jake Roberts.
Gene Okerlund: The champ is ready, Roberts is ready, Sunday night they meet for the world heavyweight title. Let’s go to our main event where Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis defends his title for the first time against the popular Billy Jack Haynes.
Match #4
Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis w/ Classie Freddie Blassie defeats Billy Jack Haynes via pinfall with the aid of interference by Blassie.
Gene Okerlund: Adrian Adonis keeps the title but it’s not without controversy as the devious Freddie Blassie was there to ensure his victory. That’s all for tonight wrestling fans. Tune in next week when we will have a full recap of the Festival of Champions!
---The show ends with a video montage of the wrestlers competing in Title Weekend and a reminder that those who want live updates over the weekend can call 1-900-UWE-NEWS. The charge for the call is well worth the real time updates as history is made.---
