UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, June 5
Airing: Friday, June 8, ESPN
Fresno, California
The show opens with a highlight package of the matches scheduled for the first Festival of Champions in Phoenix on June 17, then cuts to Gene Okerlund in the interview area.
Gene Okerlund: Welcome back to our ESPN audience for another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have a huge treat on tonight's card as Roddy Piper defends his world title against the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez, Magnum TA will be in action against the maniac Matt Bourne, Bad News Allen squares off against Steve Simpson, and you will also see Colonel Debeers in the action.
We are just a little over week away from what will surely be one of the blockbuster cards in wrestling history. At the Festival of Champions on June 17 in Phoenix, Arizona, there will be match after match of superstars who could main event any card in the world. Matches like world champion Roddy Piper against Jake Roberts, Greg Valentine taking on Magnum TA, the Rock and Roll Express against the Wild Samoans, and so many more great contests.
Tonight I am thrilled to announce three more matches for the first Festival of Champions: the tough Cowboy Ron Bass will take on Mexican star Tito Santana, Jimmy Superfly Snuka will be in the ring against Bad News Allen, and the duo we saw debut last week, the Rising Stars Brett Sawyer and Kendall Windham will battle the Army of Darkness. This a card you won't want to miss.
In addition to the Festival of Champions, another big happening in the UWE was the Hollywood Television Title Tournament we saw last week. In the end, Adrian Adonis won the belt over Billy Jack Haynes with help from Classy Freddie Blassie. As we've mentioned before, the television title will be defended on this program. The UWE competition committee has ordered a rematch between Adrian Adonis and Billy Jack Haynes on this program next week!
Joining us now is the new Hollywood Television Champion Adrian Adonis and his manager Classy Freddie Blassie. Congratulations on the title win but you can't get too comfortable as you have to defend the belt next week against Billy Jack Haynes.
Freddie Blassie: Okerlund, you're no better than all those pencil-necked geeks watching us out there in TV land. All those scrawny, puny little punks who couldn't last 5 seconds in the ring with this man. Weak little sissies like their hero Billy Jack Haynes. You think you actually have a chance against us? With my brain and his brawn, there is no one who can take us down. Come to think of it, brains and brawn, two things you don't have Billy Jack.
Adrian Adonis: Well, well, well. This wrestling promotion headquartered on the West Coast is being taken over by a New Yorker? No surprise. Seeing all these pansies walking down the street, long hair, dressed like hippies. You weaklings don't stand a chance against this East Coast attitude. Billy Jack, get yourself back to Portland real quick bother, otherwise you'll be sent there in a stretcher.
Gene Okerlund: The new champion is rather confident in his ability to defend the title. He'll have to be on top of his game next week as Billy Jack Haynes was so close to winning the belt during the title tournament if not for Freddie Blassie getting involved. Let's get to the ring for our first match. It's all yours Rod Trongard and Dutch Mantell.
Match #1
Colonel Debeers defeats Charlie Cook (FA) via pinfall. After the match, Debeers continues to slap his opponent, making derogatory claims that his opponent needs to learn his place and they shouldn't be sharing a ring together. Junkyard Dog comes out which sees Debeers leave for the back. JYD then joins Okerlund in the interview area.
Gene Okerlund: What despicable comments from Colonel Debeers. Junkyard Dog, you had a match with Debeers next weekend in Phoenix.
Junkyard Dog: The Dog will show no mercy to this man who comes out here week after week running down my people. He don't think we belong in the ring with him. When he's left lying in the middle of that mat he's going to learn real quick why we don't belong in the ring with him. Because we're too tough. Too bad. Too mean. This ain't South Africa, this is America, jack. And in this great country, we don't back down from loud-talking foreigners like you. Instead, we shut them up.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund is at the interview area when he is joined by Superfly Jimmy Snuka.
Gene Okerlund: Superfly, you seem to be recovering well. You will have to be 100% at the Festival of Champions when you take on Bad News Allen.
Jimmy Snuka: Bad News Allen is big, he's strong. But this isn't the first time I've faced someone big and strong. Ever since I got here, people have been gunning for me, trying to put the Superfly out of business. I haven't forgot about you Jake Roberts and Greg Valentine. But my attention now is on this monster known as Bad News Allen. You may be overlooking me, coming in too confident. You are going to learn next Sunday night what happens when you overlook the Superfly.
Gene Okerlund: The Superfly is ready for his big match with Bad News Allen. We'll see the man facing Snuka at the Festival of Champions as he is in action in our next contest.
Match #2
Bad News Allen defeats Steve Simpson via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Bad News Allen shows he's ready for his big showdown with Jimmy Snuka following that impressive victory over the young Steve Simpson. Another person having a big match at the Festival of Champions is our next guest, the Hammer Greg Valentine. Valentine is engaged in one of the most intense feuds in the UWE as he and Magnum TA are at each other's throats.
Greg Valentine: Next weekend son, you get what's coming to you. You've been running around Hollywood like you're some kind of superstar. Let me tell you something boy: you ain't nothing. In Phoenix, you are stepping into the ring with one the toughest men in the business. At the Festival, only one of us is stepping out of the ring. When we're done, all these little girls who scream your name will know you by something else: Magnum DOA.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Our next opponents have their work cut out for them at the Festival of Champions as they will be facing the vicious, unpredictable Sheepherders. Joining me now are B. Brian Blair and Jim Brunzell, the Killer Bees!
B. Brian Blair: Thank you Gene and thank you to all the amazing fans out there on ESPN. Over the past few weeks we've seen this team known as the Sheepherders cheat their way to victory. They use every trick in the book and then when that doesn't work, that manager of theirs interferes.
Jim Brunzell: Brian is right, these two guys don't know how to win fair and square. They love to get teams in a three on two situation. How do you beat that? You make it three on three. That's right, we brought in someone to watch our backs, someone to even the score. We want to introduce you to the man who will be in our corner at Festival of Champions, Jesse Barr!
Jesse Barr arrives at the interview area.
Jesse Barr: It's great to be here in the UWE, home of the greatest wrestlers in the world. Brian Blair and I have some history, we've fought all over the country. One thing that came out of those battles was respect. I know this man is tough and will beat you the right way. He called me and let me know that he and his partner Jim Brunzell have a little problem with these Sheepherders. They don't like to fight fair, they like to team up on people three on two. I got some news for you boys, things have evened up. At the Festival of Champions, I'll be in the corner of the Killer Bees, and if you think about referring Jonathan Boyd, you're gonna regret that decision.
Gene Okerlund: The Killer Bees bring in some insurance for their battle with the Sheepherders at the Festival of Champions. Jesse Bar will be in their corner for the big showdown. Speaking of big showdowns, let's head to the ring for our next match as the popular Magnum TA is in action.
Match #3
Magnum TA defeats Matt Bourne via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Magnum TA continues to impress! He'll need to be at this best next weekend in Phoenix when he battles Greg Valentine. Our next duo will be challenging for the World Tag-Team Championship on that same card. Joining us now are the Rock and Roll Express. Gentlemen, you get your rematch next Sunday. Tell us how you're getting ready for your title shot.
Ricky Morton: First of all Mean Gene, I want to start by thanking all the great fans out there watching us on ESPN. The cards, the letters, we've been receiving mean so much to us. All those letters that come in have one thing in common, they all ask us to take the world tag-team titles from Captain Lou Albano and the Wild Samoans. These cheaters don't represent the fans and they don't represent this company., That's why next Sunday night, we're coming home as tag-team champions.
Robert Gibson: We're preparing for this bout like we do for all our matches. We're training hard, we're studying, we're doing everything we can to be ready next Sunday night. The Wild Samoans are a viscous team, there's no doubt about that. They like to intimidate their opponents. I got news for you boys, we ain't intimidated. You are stepping into the ring with the Rock and Roll Express, and when you leave that ring next Sunday night, it ain't going to be with the tag team titles.
---Commercial break---
Gene Okerlund: In our huge main event, the world heavyweight champion Roddy Piper will defend his belt against the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez. Perez was impressive in last week's TV title tournament, as we was one of the final three men left in the ring. He gets his shot at glory tonight against Roddy Piper. Before that match though, we have a video sent in by Jake Roberts, who let us know he could not be here this evening due to prior commitments.
----Video begins with Jake Roberts on a Hollywood movie lot, walking by a movie set---
Jake Roberts: What did I tell you last week Piper, you are nothing but a movie set, son. Look at this scene behind me, big buildings, strong structures. Everyone who sees this set at the movie theater will think it's real. I hate to break it to you: it's not. Because when you knock down this movie set. (Roberts picks up a sledge hammer and start to pound the movie set. It eventually tumbles down.) When you hit it, when you knock it down, there nothing there. There's nothing behind it. It's a facade, it's a fantasy. Next Sunday night, the entire wrestling world is going to see first-hand, you're nothing but this movie set Roddy Piper. All show, all bluster, nothing to back it up. The wrestling world gets a real world champion next weekend. (Roberts stomps on the movie set again for effect.)
---Video ends---
Gene Okerlund: Jake Roberts continues to assault Piper's character and reputation, repeating his claim that Piper is a movie-set champion. I'm sure the champ will have something to say about that. It's time for our main event as we get the privilege of seeing the world champion in action.
Match #4
UWE World Champion Roddy Piper defeats Al Perez via DQ for outside interference. As the battle between Piper and Perez heads to the ringside floor, they are fighting near the rail that separates the wrestlers from the fans in the front row. As Piper starts to get the upper hand, someone rushes to the railing and strikes Piper, then continues to pummel the champion. The man jumps the rail, removes his hoodie and we see that it's Jake Roberts! He kicks the fallen Piper then gives him the indignity of placing his snake on Piper before security intervenes.
Gene Okerlund: What a despicable act by Jake Roberts! This heinous attack on Piper cannot be allowed stand. How did security let this happen?!?! We'll check on Piper's condition and update you next week, and we'll talk to UWE officials about what can be done to prevent this type of atrocious conduct. We'll see you next week wrestling fans.
---The show ends with another video montage of the wrestlers competing at the Festival of Champions in Phoenix on June 17---
