UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, May 29
Airing: Friday, June 1, ESPN
Reno, Nevada
The show opens with a shot of Gene Okerlund who is stationed at the interview center as he welcomes fans to Superstars of the Ring.
Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. Do we have a huge show for you tonight!?!? This evening we will crown the first Hollywood Television Champion, a title belt that will be defended right here on this very program week after week. Word got out that we’re crowing a new champion, which led to RSVPs from some great international stars. Competing this evening along with many of our UWE wrestlers will be Puerto Rican legend Carlos Colon and former NFL star Ernie "the Big Cat" Ladd. Coupled with the talent we already have the in UWE, it’s going to be one heck of a battle royal.
Last week Lord James Blears made a huge announcement on our last program: this Summer, the UWE will be hosting blockbuster cards throughout the country known as the Festival of Champions. At our first card in Phoenix, Arizona, two matches have already been signed, Junkyard Dog will take on Colonel Debeers and Magnum TA will face Greg Valentine. I am thrilled to announce that two more tag-team matches have been added the card: the Rock and Roll Express will challenge the Wild Samoans for the World Tag-Team Titles, and the Killer Bees will battle the Sheepherders with the winner to get a world title shot at the second Festival of Champions in Portland, Oregon on July 15.
Joining us now to talk about his team’s upcoming title defense at the Festival of Champions, please welcome Captain Lou Albano and the world champions, the Wild Samoans.
Captain Lou Albano: What kind of idiots run this place? You think putting those pretty boy rock and roll pretenders is going to be any kind of challenge for my men? These two beasts are the wildest, meanest, baddest two men in all of wrestling. It’s going to take a lot more than two scrawny little boys to beat these men. We are going to defend this title against anyone who dares step in the ring with us, and when that final bell tolls, we’re walking out still the champs. Take that to the bank, jack.
Gene Okerlund: The Captain is confident as we head into Festival of Champions season. His team better be at the top of their game as some of the best tag teams in the world are aiming for those belts. Debuting in our next match is a young duo that hope to be in that title conversation soon. Making his first appearance in in the UWE is Kendall Windham, who has formed an alliance with Brett Sawyer, for a team now known as the Rising Stars. They will face the tough duo of Black Bart and Matt Bourne. We’re sending it to you Rod Trongard and Dutch Mantell.
Match #1
The Rising Stars Kendall Windham and Brett Sawyer have a successful debut as they defeat Black Bart and Matt Bourne.
Gene Okerlund: A good win for the Rising Stars who are out to make a name for themselves in the UWE. Our next guest is more than made a name for himself already, he’s one of the biggest stars in wrestling. We are joined by Jake the Snake Roberts.
Jake Roberts: Walking around Hollywood, you see a lot of movie sets. You see images that look big, images that look strong. You walk by those movie sets and can’t help but be impressed. But here’s the thing about those sets, there’s nothing behind them. You walk up to a painted wall, you knock it over, there’s nothing behind it. It’s just a façade, it’s just an illusion. That’s what your championship is Roddy Piper, nothing more than a movie set. You walk out here talking big and bad, but you forget that you’re an illegitimate champion. You got help in the title tournament, from Magnum TA, from Jimmy Snuka, you didn’t do it on your own. Just like a movie set, when I knock you down, people are going to see there’s nothing there, you are nothing but a fake.
The movie set champion.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Those were some very strong words from Jake Roberts in our last segment. We are going to adjust our schedule a bit as the world champion has demanded he be afforded an opportunity to respond to the Snake’s words.Joining us now is Rowdy Roddy Piper.
Roddy Piper: You think I’m a movie set? You think I can’t back up my talk? You got another thing coming. I’m a whole lot more than a movie set pal, I’m the whole darn show. The blockbuster. The one people are coming to see. I’m getting sick and tired of you coming out here whining that I didn’t win this title fair and square. There’s only one way to shut up a loud mouth: with a punch right across their face. Lord James Blears, come out here! Come on, get yourself out here.
-Lord James Blears arrives at the interview area—
Roddy Piper: I don’t know who the UWE wanted me to face at the Festival of Champions, but it better Jake Roberts. I want to put this title on the line against him and shut him up once and for all. Get the contracts drawn up, sign on the dotted line, because I’m not going to stand for this anymore.
Lord James Blears: We are in consultation with a number of people, both within the UWE and from around the wrestling world, to challenge for the world title at the first Festival of Champions. As the Commissioner of the UWE, I am vested with certain discretionary power. This is a match that people want to see. Therefore, I am ordering that Roddy Piper will defend his world heavyweight championship against Jake Roberts on June 17 at the Festival of Champions in Phoenix.
Gene Okerlund: You heard it here first! Jake Roberts will challenge for Roddy Piper for the world heavyweight title at the first Festival of Champions! You will not want to miss this exciting night of wrestling. Let's get to the ring for our next match of the evening.
Match #2
Greg Valentine defeats Scott Casey via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Another impressive outing for the Hammer who is gearing up for his big match against Magnum TA in Phoenix on June 17. Joining us now is Tito Santana who was the recipient of some choice words from Cowboy Ron Bass on last week's show. Tito, how do you respond to Bass' comments that you're just the help and don't deserve to be in the ring with him.?
Tito Santana: This so-called cowboy comes out here and runs his mouth, saying my people only get the jobs he doesn't want. Let me tell you something Bass. My people are the hardest working people on this planet. You give them a job, they do it brother, and they do it right. Don't matter what it is, we're the ones you can count on. Well have a new job now. My job is to teach you some manners, to teach you to quit running your mouth against my people. Like everything else, that's a job I will succeed at. I'm asking the UWE front office, let us get it on at Festival of Champions. Arriba!
---Commercial break---
Gene Okerlund: Before we get to our big main event, I want to let our fans know that next week, world heavyweight champion Roddy Piper will defend his title on this program for our ESPN viewing audience. What a treat that will be! As we get ready for the battle royal, we we get a chance to hear from one of the biggest stars in the sport, Magnum TA.
Magnum TA: We're getting closer and closer Greg Valentine! Closer and closer to your day of reckoning. You claim you've beat the toughest that wrestling has to to offer. Let me tell you something son, you've never faced anyone like me. Only one of us is leaving that Phoenix desert, and that person is standing right in front of you. Be ready for the fight of your life.
Gene Okerlund: Magnum TA can't wait for the Festival of Champions. We have fifteen wrestlers who are also ready. In this instance, they all want title gold. It's time for our main event:
