UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, May 15
Airing: Friday, May 18, ESPN
Seattle, Washington
The show opens with a video of a package showing highlights from Title Weekend, culminating in Roddy Piper’s victory over Jake Roberts in the heavyweight title tournament.
At the conclusion of the video package, the shot moves to Gene Okerlund who is stationed at the interview center as he welcomes fans to Superstars of the Ring.
Gene Okerlund: Welcome back to our ESPN audience for another edition of Superstars of the Ring. Where do we even begin?! Last weekend were two of the biggest nights in wrestling history. In San Diego, the Wild Samoans defeated the Rock and Roll Express in the tournament final to become the world tag-team champions. Then on Sunday in the Forum, Roddy Piper defeated Jake Roberts in a grueling tournament to become the UWE world heavyweight champion. You will hear from the new world champions on the program tonight. In addition, there are plenty of other people who want to talk about the events of last weekend. At the top of that list are our first two guests, Jake Roberts and Greg Valentine. Valentine and Magnum TA had a brutal first round match that saw both men eliminated and each of them suffer physical damage. Jake Roberts was able to advance to the final where he was ultimately defeated by Roddy Piper.
Greg Valentine: Enough with your revisionist history, Okerlund. The only thing you said that was right is that Magnum and I were both eliminated in the first round. The part about me suffering physical damage, you need to get your head checked. I got eliminated from the tournament because I was having too much fun beating up Magnum TA. As much as I love world titles, I love beating up punks even more. Magnum TA, bad news for you son, the beatings aren’t done. You and are just getting started, and when I’m done, your career is what’s going to end.
Jake Roberts: The Snake is under attack from those who don’t know the power of the venom. Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka, Lord James Blears, all the people who conspired against me will soon know what happens when you poke the snake. I will watch you with that title around your waist Piper, I will let you bask in your momentary glory, then I will have my way with you. That world title is simply in a resting place before it comes and takes a home where it belongs: in the snake den.
Gene Okerlund: Valentine and Roberts are set on gaining revenge for all that transpired last week. With Valentine’s feud with Magnum TA heating to a boiling point, and Roberts with his sights set on Piper’s title, these two will be right in the mix of things for a while. Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening as we’ll see Billy Jack Haynes in action. Haynes was impressive in the title tournament losing a tough semi-final match to Jake Roberts. Take it away Rod Trongard and Dutch Mantell.
Match #1
Billy Jack Haynes defeated Ron Starr via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Someone who did not have a great weekend was Classy Freddy Blassie and his two entrants, Adrian Adonis and Jumbo Tsuruta. Here to talk about where his men go from here is the Classy One along with Adrian Adonis.
Classy Freddie Blassie: Quit your editorializing, Gene. The only reason my men had a bad weekend is because they were cheated. Billy Jack Haynes, this pencil necked geek, bent every rule in the book while my men tried to fight with integrity. The UWE should step in immediately and sanction Haynes for his deceitful actions. Because I know they won’t step in, we’ll take matters into our own hands. Haynes, you are in our cross hairs. You will pay the price for getting in our way. As for Tsuruta, I let that dead weight go. He was fired and has been sent back to Japan with a one-way ticket. I don’t stand for second-rate performers. With me being able to focus my time and attention on Adrian Adonis, it’ll be no time at all before we’re on top of this federation.
---Commercial Break---
When we return from break Gene Okerlund is with Captain Lou Albano and the world tag-team champions, the Wild Samoans.
Gene Okerlund: Captain Lou Albano has been coming out here for weeks boasting that his team would win the world tag-team titles. I have to give you credit Captain, you were right. But your team has some tough duos they will have to fend off if they want to keep those belts.
Captain Lou Albano: You can’t just give us a compliment can you? Of course I was right. Look at these monsters. Who could possibly have stopped us from winning gold? Those little pretty boys the Rock and Roll express, the Killer Bees? Casey and Simpson? Come on Gene, there is no one who could stop us and there is no one who is going to take these belts from us. We are the world champions, something you better get used to
Gene Okerlund: The Captain may not want to admit it, but his team may not want to celebrate too much. Teams like the duo involved in our next match are going to be gunning for them. Let’s get the ring as the Rock and Roll Express are in action.
Match #2
Rock and Roll Express defeated Mike Shaw (FA) and Raul Castro (FA).
Gene Okerlund: An impressive showing by the Rock and Roll Express who will be gunning to get those world titles from the Wild Samoans. Another team that has to be considered top contenders are our next guests, the Sheepherders. Gentlemen, you made it to the semi-finals last week before falling to the Rock and Roll Express. What is your plan for remaining in title contention?
Lord Jonathan Boyd: What is our plan? Our plan is beat the heck our of every single team in the UWE. Our plan is send these teams that get in the ring with us out on a stretcher. Our plan is to become world tag-team champions. The Killer Bees, I’ve been informed that my men are facing them in the main event on next week’s program. In New Zealand, we don’t have time for such pests as little bees. When we get in the ring next week, that will be the end of the Bees, and the another step in our rise to the top.
---Commercial Break---
As we return from commercial, a video package is shown of Colonel Debeers attempting to interrupt the national anthem at Title Weekend, and Junkyard Dog running into the ring to stop the shenanigans.
Coloneel Debeers then joins Gene Okerlund at the interview area.
Colonel Debeers: What Junkyard Dog did was a travesty! I thought this America, where you are so proud of your free speech. All I was doing was telling the truth, reminding you all that your country is weak and you have no control over the savages. Was my free speech protected? No, I was mugged by a common thief. Just as a suspected, America and your people are nothing but frauds, nothing but pretenders. You are going to get a taste of justice, South African style. Junkyard Dog, step in the ring with me boy. That’s an order.
Gene Okerlund: Colonel Debeers invoking our constitution. One thing he may have to worry about if he keeps bad mouthing Junkyard Dog: cruel and unusual punishment. The outlaw Ron Bass is in action in our next match against the rising up and comer Steve Simpson.
Match #3
Steve Simpson defeated Ron Bass via disqualification when Bass used his bullwhip injure Simpson during the match.
Gene Okerlund: Ron Bass introduced young Simpson to his trusted bullwhip, an introduction Simpson likely did not want. Here to respond to the comments from Colonel Debeers is the popular Junkyard Dog.
Junkyard Dog: Look here Gene, this man Debeers has been coming out here for weeks running me down. He crossed the line when he tried to run down America. I don’t stand for that and I know all you fans out there won’t stand for it either. Debeers, you want a piece of the Dog? You got it. Anytime, anyplace, I don’t matter to me. You’ve been running your mouth for a little too long, it’s time to put up or shut up. Let’s get it on!
Gene Okerlund: Junkyard Dog accepts the challenge from Colonel Debeers. I’m sure the UWE matchmakers will work to get this one finalized quickly. When we return from break, we’ll hear from the UWE world champion, and then see Magnum TA in action.
---Commercial break---
Roddy Piper, with the UWE World Heavyweight Championship belt, arrives at the interview area.
Gene Okerlund: Roddy Piper, congratulations! I am proud to call you world champion. It was a hard night, but in the end you walked out with title gold. Roberts and his people are claiming that you wrestled one less match during the tournament because of the Double DQ in the Magnum v. Valentine match. How do you respond to those critics?
Roddy Piper: You sure do know how to stop a celebration? What are you are trying to say Gene, that I don’t deserve this title, that I didn’t win it fair and square. I ain’t got no control over what happens in the other matches, all I can control is beating the men they put in front of me. That’s exactly what I did at the Forum. Every person they put in front of me went down for the 1.2.3. That includes you Jake Roberts. A good excuse is the best friend of a sore loser. You think I don’t deserve this belt. Let’s get in the ring again, anytime. That goes for everyone else out there. I’m the world heavyweight champion. Ain’t nobody taking this from me.
Gene Okerlund: The world champion is quite irritated at those questioning his tournament victory and has vowed to prove it in the ring. Another guy who continues to prove his worth in the ring is Magnum TA, who will face a tough challenge from the Latin heartthrob Al Perez.
Match #4
Magnum TA defeated Al Perez via pinfall. With the match concluded, Greg Valentine comes to the ring and attacks Magnum, with the men fighting till separated.
Gene Okerlund: This fight between Magnum TA and Greg Valentine takes another step in intensity each week! Thank you for joining us for another edition of Superstars of the Ring, We’ll see you next week!
