UNIVERSAL WRESTLING ENTERPRISE presents
Superstars of the Ring
Taped: Tuesday, April 24
Airing: Friday, April 27, ESPN
Las Vegas, Nevada
Thomas and Mack Center
A small pyrotechnic display opens the show as Gene Okerlund is in the middle of the ring. Okerlund speaks directly into the camera.
Gene Okerlund: “Welcome to the first edition of Superstars of the Ring! This program is being brought to you through a partnership between ESPN and the Universal Wrestling Enterprise, a collaboration that is going to change the wrestling world. Every Friday night, the best wrestlers in the world are going to appear right here on this show, beamed right into your living room. The wrestling world is going through a dramatic change, and here to explain more is the President of the Universal Wrestling Enterprise, Lord James Blears.”
Lord James Blears: “A lot of wrestling fans have a lot of questions about what is going on with our sport. Let me try and clear a few things up. The Board of Directors has issued a statement and I want to read it to you now:
Recent developments have forced a seismic shift in the pro wrestling landscape. Gone is the World Wrestling Federation, gone is the AWA, gone is the NWA. The promotions that fans grew up watching and following are gone. But with change comes progress. Some may see this as a bad thing, we here at the Universal Wrestling Enterprise see it as a very good thing. Gone are the old norms that held back the sport for so long. Now we can assemble the best group of wrestlers in the world, put them on your television every Friday night, and bring them to you all over the country.
We have signed some of the most exciting, entertaining, athletic men in all the sport. The Universal Wrestling Enterprise will work hard to earn you as a fan. Our sport shunned innovation for too long, without innovation comes stagnation. We are here to innovate this sport that our grandparents loved, that our parents loved, that we love.”
I also want to make a very important announcement regarding our title belts. Every new promotion needs new champions. On May 12 and May 13, we will have Title Weekend, in which the new World Heavyweight Champion and the new World Tag-Team Champions will be crowned. On May 12 at the San Diego Sports Arena, there will be a tag-team title tournament, on May 13 at the Forum in Los Angeles, there will be a world heavyweight title tournament. It should be a history making weekend.
Gene Okerlund: “What an incredible announcement. All roads lead to Title Weekend! Over the next three weeks, we will see some of the amazing stars who will compete in those title tournaments. Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening as we’ll see one of the teams that surely has to be considered favorites to win the world tag-team title, the Wild Samoans, and their eccentric manager Lou Albano”
Match #1
The Wild Samoans w/ Captain Lou Albano defeated Bill Ash (FA) and Mike George (FA) via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund has left ringside and is now back in the interview area, where he is ready for his first guests.
Gene Okerlund: The UWE has scouted the world to find the best tag-team talent the sport has to offer. My next two guests have won titles all over the world, and they’re here to add the UWE world tag-team title to their list of accomplishments. Please welcome Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson, the Rock and Roll Express.
Ricky Morton: Rock and Roll has come to the UWE! I promise you all have never seen a team like the Rock and Roll Express. Whether you're watching the show in Miami, New York, Chi Town, it don't matter where you're at, come and join the Rock and Roll revolution.
Robert Gibson: We know how to party, we know how to rock, but brother, let me tell you this, we sure as heck know how to fight. In San Diego, on May 12, those titles are ours.
Gene Okerlund: Rock and roll fever has hit airwaves of ESPN! You won't want to miss these two when they are in action on our program next week. Let's head to the ring for our next match.
Match #2
Billy Jack Haynes defeats Matt Bourne via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: What a win by the pride of the Pacific Northwest, Billy Jack Haynes. Joining us now is one of the most popular wrestlers in the business, a man not afraid to test the limits of gravity, the one they call the Superfly, Jimmy Snuka.
Jimmy Snuka: Here I am brother, standing before you people. I've given my heart and soul to the business of professional wrestling. Sacrificed my body, my physical well-being, all for you fans. As long as I'm able to walk to ring, that will always be the case. Men have tried to cripple me, to end my career. I keep coming back. Among the stars of the Universal Wresting Federation, I will continue to shine.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Be sure to tune in next week as we will continue to introduce more great stars as we get closer to Title Weekend. On the program you will see...
Okerlund is interrupted as two men arrive at the interview area: Jake Roberts and Greg Valentine.
Jake Roberts: I'm tired of listening to you fawn over a group of wrestlers who can't hold a candle to me. I've come here to the West Coast to win the heavyweight title, not for the fans watching on tv, not for those people in the arena, but for me. I do this for the money, I do this for the power. Winning that heavyweight title is my path to power and there is not a thing any of these people you've signed can do about it. It doesn't matter who am going to face, I want anyone who thinks they can step into the ring with me to ask themselves one simple question: can you handle the snake? And just in case you're getting any crazy thoughts in your head, here's another matter to ponder: this man right here, Greg the Hammer Valentine, he'll be watching my back too.
Greg Valentine: You heard that right. This is a business, and this man has made it worth my time to come and wrestling in front of you miserable fans. My goal is not to win your cheers, but to win title belts, because title belts mean money. Snake is going to win the world title, when that assignment is complete, I'll take a title for myself. Los Angeles, ESPN, you've never seen anything like us.
Gene Okerlund: Very strong words from two intense competitors. Let's head to the ring for our next match as the popular Junkyard Dog is in action.
Match #3
Junkyard Dog defeats Black Bart via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Before we head to our commercial break, we are joined by the wrestler known as Colonel Debeers. Before he gets going, let me state for the record that the UWE does not condone or endorse his comments...
Colonel Debeers: Shut up Okerlund! You are no better than these dirty wrestlers who are soiling the ring. You are looking at the greatest sports specimen in the world from the greatest country in the world. In South Africa, we don't have these issue you have. We demand respect, and if you don't give respect, you face a justice system that is fast and swift. I will demand respect from people like Junkyard Dog, and if he refuses to give it, he's going to get something that's been coming to him for a long time: a beating he'll never forget.
Gene Okerlund: Like I said, the controversial statements of Colonel Debeers are his own and protected by the First amendment. It doesn't mean we have to like it.
---Commercial break---
Gene Okerlund: Before our main event, it is my pleasure to welcome one of the most recognizable names in all of wrestling, Rowdy Roddy Piper:
Roddy Piper: It don't make no difference to me where I am, who I'm fighting. I'm coming out of that ring as the winner. I come from Glasgow, Scotland. It took a long time for those people to become proud of me. Once I beat Bad New Allen tonight, then go out and celebrate with some of these showgirls, I'll test that pride they have in me. But rest assured, when I walk out the Forum with the world title, those people back home will be singing the Flower of Scotland all night long.
Gene Okerlund: Roddy Piper has tons of confidence, he'll need it as he faces off next against Bad News Allen. Let's go the ring for our main event.
Match #4
Roddy Piper defeats Bad News Allen via disqualification for outside interference when Jake Roberts and Greg Valentine come to the ring and brutally attack Piper. They continue double teaming him, going so far as to attack him with a chair before security restores intervenes . Piper is being tended to by medical personnel while Roberts and Valentine head to the back, both with huge grins.
Gene Okerlund: This is not the way we wanted to end our first ever broadcast. We will have a complete rundown of Piper's condition next week and get to the bottom of this brutal attack. Until next time.
---Television broadcast ends---
Matches not shown on television:
Match #5
Tito Santana defeated Adrian Adonis via pinfall.
Match #6
Al Perez defeated Steve Simpson via pinfall.
Match #7
Jimmy Snuka and Colonel Debeers fought to a double disqualification when the parties continued fighting outside the ring.
