Bill: “Steve it is great to be with you, I know that not only do we have an exciting hour of action ahead, but there is a lot of incredible news we have to share with the viewers.
Steve: “Bill I know you will have a very special announcement for Houston wrestling fans, many of whom have many many questions about what is going on in the sport right now, and you will answer many of those big questions very shortly. Like you alluded to we have a very busy hour, let’s get right to wrestling!

Steve: “At this time ladies and gentlemen, Bill Watts!
Bill Watts: “Thank you Steve. The reason I asked for this time is to address the news, rumors and innuendo viewers have may read in newspapers, wrestling magazines, or saw and heard on TV and radio concerning the state of professional wrestling at this time. Fans in Houston have known me and my reputation for many years now, and I am proud to say that I have always given the viewers the unvarnished truth, been straight up and plan to do the same now.
"The facts are these: Recently, the United States Supreme Court ruled unfavorably in a lawsuit that alleged the National Wrestling Association and its promoters constituted a monopoly. The lawsuit contended the NWA unfairly protected territories from other promoters though illegal collaboration and cigar-smoked filled back rooms and blackballed wrestlers that did not adhere to the wishes of those promoters.
“Steve, I cannot disagree more with these contentions. But even if true, Baseball, Football, Basketball----all sports I love mind you---- have for decades operated as monopolies, yet have enjoyed the protection of the Federal government. Try setting up a major league professional baseball team in Detroit, or a football team in Kansas City.
“Imagine being an NBA basketball player with say the New York Knicks, being unhappy with your coach, and showing up the day after to play for the Celtics. That cannot happen because all these teams control their players with contracts. And you know what? It makes sense.
“Imagine the Astros if their entire outfield got mad at Bob Lillis and went to play the next day for the rival Padres? Or if some millionaire wanted to just set up professional football team right here in Houston and signed up all the Oilers players. It would create chaos with our beloved sports!
“But in the NWA we HAD a system where wrestlers could, at ANY time, put in a 2-weeks notice and move to another promotion to better themselves financially. Protected territories? Atlanta, Indianapolis, Detroit, are all examples of cities in the past that have hosted more than one promotion and it was the fans who decided with their ticket dollars who survived.
“Yet the NWA was ruled a monopoly. Why has wrestling been singled out among all the major sports?
“Here once again I will look the camera in the eye and give it to you the viewers straight down the middle because I will never tell you a lie:
“Viewers, the Federal government does not respect our sport, or you, the fans. And as a result of this decision which we disagree with but as patriotic Americans must respect, the NWA has been disbanded. In its place? The turning of a negative into a positive. A change in direction that shows that unlike your government, the sport RESPECTS you, the wrestling fan.
“I am pleased to announce the formation of the World Wrestling Union with former NWA President Bob Geigel taking over, and it is the intent of this auspicious organization to promote professional wrestling on television right here from Pasadena, Texas at Gilley’s.
“What will change? Well, other than agreeing to a few minor legal technicalities, the quality of the action in the ring will remain the same. The level of stardom of the wrestlers will not change. And the commitment of the wrestling promoter to you, the valued fan, will always remain the #1 priority.
“With your support, and with the in ring efforts of the greatest athletes in the world, professional wrestlers, we will quickly reclaim the mantle of Sport of Kings, Professional Wrestling. Let a new era of Houston Wrestling begin, right here today!
Steve: “Well said, Bill Watts, let me just say I’m excited for the future of this great sport! Frank Savage is in the ring waiting his opponent.
