Broadcast on Saturday, March 24, 1989 @ 6pm on Superstation WGN
Taped March 23, 1989 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois
“From coast to coast, border to border, and continent to continent, this is the AWA, the major leagues of professional wrestling!”
VTR: Last Week on Pro Wrestling USA:
Kamala gains an early advantage, and spends the next few minutes choking, gouging, stomping and biting the Sarge! Kamala seems to have the match well in hand, but when he runs the ropes and attempts a splash, Slaughter gets his knees up. Slaughter then makes a comeback, and takes the fight to the Ugandan warrior, stunning him with a flurry of rights and lefts that leave the big man staggering around the ring.
Moments later, Sarge connects with the SLAUGHTER CANNON! Slaughter looks to be on his way to victory, but Paul Orndorff hits the ring! Orndorff attacks Slaughter from behind, but before too much damage can be done, Jimmy Snuka and the man who came out of the crowd last week, hit the ring and help Sarge run the heels off.
LARRY NELSON climbs into the ring and talks with Slaughter, Snuka and the man that Slaughter introduces as Cpl. Kirchner. Sarge says that Kirchner is a former Army paratrooper, and very close friend of his. Sarge shakes Kirchner’s hand, and says he’s happy to have Kirchner here in the AWA.
END VTR
Rod Trongard opens the show and welcomes his co-host, Gordon Solie.
Trongard says that they have a very special show this week, last weekend, at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, we saw brand new World Tag Team champions crowned, as Steve Williams and Gary Albright defeated Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart to win the titles! Tonight, we’ll see that match, in it’s entirety, right here on television!
Solie reminds us that there will be no Pro Wrestling USA next week, as the television special “the Brawl in St. Paul” will air on WGN instead. They’ll talk about that event a little later on.
Before we get to the World Tag Team title match, Trongard and Solie talk a little bit about the history between the champions and the team of Williams and Albright.
We see footage of Williams and Albright winning the 10-team tournament on Christmas night in St. Paul. By winning the tournament, they earned not only the $20,000 prize money, but also a shot at the World Tag titles.
From there we see footage of some of the previous matches between Hart & Neidhart and Williams & Albright. These matches usually ended inconclusively, mainly due to outside interference from either Jimmy Hart or other members of Jimmy’s Hart Foundation.
We then see a few minutes of highlights from a recent 6-man tag match, where Williams and Albright teamed with Sgt. Slaughter to face Bret, Neidhart and Paul Orndorff.
Solie says that the added stipulation to the final showdown in Chicago would see Jimmy Hart handcuffed to Sgt. Slaughter at ringside for the duration of the bout, ensuring that he wouldn’t interfere.
Bret & Neidhart vs Williams & Albright, 3/17/89 at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, IL
Jimmy is not happy about having to be cuffed to Sgt. Slaughter, voicing his displeasure to everyone within earshot. Slaughter threatens him, and that seems to shut Hart up, at least for the time being. The match is a wild one, with the champions focusing their attention on Albright, the inexperienced member of the challenging team. They keep him isolated in their half of the ring early on, and work him over. Albright turns the tables though, he ducks a clothesline from Neidhart, then grabs Neidhart and hits a release German suplex, dropping Neidhart right on the back of his head and folding him up like an accordion!
Albright makes a mad dash for his corner, and tags in the former AWA World champion! Williams dominates the next few minutes, tossing Bret and Neidhart around like ragdolls! The champions briefly gain the upper hand when they double-team Williams, but Doc is on fire tonight, and he gains the upper hand again, after reversing an Irish whip, and sending Bret crashing into Neidhart. The moment sends Bret tumbling through the ropes and to the floor, and Williams then scoops Neidhart, the legal man, up and drives him into the mat with the Oklahoma Stampede!
Bret, though dazed, still tries to climb back into the ring as Doc covers Neidhart, but Bret doesn’t make it in time, and Steve Williams gets the 1, 2, 3 on Jim Neidhart!
WE HAVE NEW AWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS!!!!!
Trongard and Solie talk about the “Brawl in St. Paul”, coming up next Saturday night, March 31, and airing live right here on Superstation WGN!
They talk a little about the matches that will take place:
Tag Team Grudge Match!
Steve “Dr. Death” Williams & Gary Albright vs AWA Triple Crown champ Stan Hansen & Big Van Vader
Boot Camp Match!
Sgt. Slaughter & Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka vs “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff & Kamala; Cpl. Kirchner will be in Slaughter and Snuka’s corner, to keep an eye on Jimmy Hart!
6-man Tag Team Match!
The Fantastics & Jackie Fulton vs The Samoan SWAT Team & their manager Diamond Dallas Page
Rick Martel vs Jumpin’ Jim Brunzell
Owen Hart vs Tiger Mask
Trongard talks a little bit about the 6-man tag match that will see Diamond Dallas Page actually compete in the ring, alongside his Samoan SWAT Team! He says that AWA President Nick Bockwinkel made the decision that, if Page was going to interfere in his team’s matches, then he could get in the ring and wrestle alongside them!
Solie then talks about the main event, the tag team match of Steve Williams and Gary Albright against Stan Hansen and Big Van Vader. Solie says that this is a rivalry he’s followed, going all the way back to Hansen first challenging Williams for the AWA World title, prior to the unification of the Triple Crown, last Fall! He says that the last time we saw these two teams face off was part of a 6-man tag match on January 20 in St. Paul.
Because the World Tag title match was shown in full, we’re out of time for this week.
Trongard and Solie hype next Saturday night’s special “Brawl in St. Paul”, right here on Superstation WGN.
