AWA “PRO WRESTLING USA”
Broadcast live Saturday, March 10, 1989 @ 6pm on Superstation WGN
From the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois
“From coast to coast, border to border, and continent to continent, this is the AWA, the major leagues of professional wrestling!”
VTR: Last Week on Pro Wrestling USA:
Late in the match, the Fantastics gain the upper hand, and appear to be on their way to victory. When Tommy and Bobby hit the Fantastic Flip on Samu, Dallas Page is beside himself on commentary. Suddenly, Page jumps up and rushes to the ring!
DDP slides into the ring and breaks up Bobby Fulton’s pinfall attempt on Samu. Referee DeRusha calls for the bell, and awards the match, by DQ, to the Fantastics and Jackie Fulton!
When the Fantastics confront DDP, they’re jumped from behind by the SST and Tama! They pummel Rogers and the Fultons, eventually leaving them lying in the ring, before following DDP to the back.
END VTR
Rod Trongard opens the show alone. Trongard is then joined by AWA President Nick Bockwinkel.
Bockwinkel says that the AWA had no choice but to remove Diamond Dallas Page from his position as co-host of the show after Page interfered in the SST’s match last week. He says that they can’t have announcers involving themselves in the match, even though Page does hold a manager’s license, at that particular time he was acting as an announcer, not a manager.
Bock says that, because Page does hold a manager’s license, he can’t stop him from accompanying the Samoan SWAT Team to the ring, but he will no longer be the co-host of Pro Wrestling USA.
Bock says that Trongard’s new co-host will be introduced on next week’s show!
Trongard thanks the fans for joining him at our new day and time, 6pm on Saturdays, right here on Superstation WGN. Trongard then talks about tonight’s show.
Owen Hart and Rick Martel will both be in singles matches, and we’ll see the Samoan SWAT Team, the Road Warriors and the Fantastics in tag team action as well! The main event will see Sgt. Slaughter do battle with the Hart Foundation’s “hired gun”, the Ugandan warrior Kamala!
OWEN HART VS. AL MADRIL. Owen gets the win after connecting with a Moonsault.
Trongard is joined at the announce desk by Jimmy Hart and “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff. Orndorff complains that Sgt. Slaughter has used every dirty trick in the book to hang onto the Americas title when they meet, including getting himself intentionally disqualified, and even going so far as to pay off the officials of their matches to turn a blind eye to Slaughter’s constant cheating.
Jimmy Hart says that, even though Orndorff doesn’t have the belt right now, everyone knows he’s still the people’s choice, and the people’s champion!
Orndorff says that as soon as he gets a fair shake against Slaughter, that Americas title belt will be back around his waist.
MAGNUM TA is standing by with Diamond Dallas Page and the Samoan SWAT Team. Magnum says that last week, they lost the 6-man tag match against the Fantastics and Jackie Fulton after Page interfered.
DDP says that the Fantastics may have won that particular battle, but the war is far from over! Page says that the Fantastics were lucky last week . . . lucky they were able to walk out of the ring under their own power, but the next time his Samoans get ahold of them, that won’t be the case!
THE SAMOAN SWAT TEAM: SAMU & FATU (w/ Diamond Dallas Page) VS. BRAD & BART BATTEN. The Batten Twins enjoy an early advantage, using their quickness to stick and move, not letting the Samoans get ahold of them. That all changes, however, when Brad Batten makes the mistake of ramming Samu’s head into the top turnbuckle, it has no effect, Samu just smiles at Batten . . . then chops him in the throat! It’s all SST from there, as Samu and Fatu pummel both Battens, eventually getting the win after both Samu and Fatu connect with diving headbutts onto Bart, and Samu pins him.
After the bout, the Samoans continue to assault the Battens, and DDP even gets some shots in, kicking Brad several times in the ribs. Suddenly, the crowd errupts and the Fantastics hit the ring!
Fulton and Rogers clear the Samoans from the ring, and then hit DDP with a double dropkick that sends him through the ropes and to the floor, much to the delight of the Chicago fans.
MAGNUM TA is standing by with AWA Americas champion Sgt. Slaughter. Sarge responds to Paul Orndorff’s earlier comments, saying that these great fans know that he’s an honorable man, he’s never had to cheat to win matches, and honestly, he would rather lose than have to resort to cheating!
Slaughter says that he’s given Orndorff plenty of opportunities to regain this title but Orndorff hasn’t been able to get the job done! Slaughter then talks about his match with Kamala in tonight’s main event, and says that after he deals with the Ugandan warrior tonight, he’ll go through the rest of Hart Foundation, one by one, until he’s ran them all out of the AWA!
THE ROAD WARRIORS: HAWK & ANIMAL (w/ Paul Ellering) VS. DENNIS KNIGHT & ED WISKOSKI. Hawk and Animal dominate the match, winning in about 90 seconds when Hawk pins Wiskoski after the Doomsday Device.
MAGNUM TA is standing by with Mr. Matsuda, Genichiro Tenryu and Jumbo Tsuruta. Matsuda talks about the Road Warriors showing up last week, and says that Paul Ellering must be feeling pretty proud of himself. He says that Hawk and Animal pump themselves full of steroids, they paint their faces, and they think they’re intimidating. Well he and his men are NOT intimidated! He says that Tenryu and Tsuruta are elite wrestlers, not streetfighters like Hawk and Animal, and as elite wrestlers, they will prevail!
THE FANTASTICS: TOMMY ROGERS & BOBBY FULTON VS. BOB OWENS & JERRY MONTI. The Fantastics get the win when Rogers pins Monti after the Fantastic Flip.
MAGNUM TA is standing by with AWA Triple Crown champion Stan Hansen.
Footage is shown of the Hansen & Vader & Bam Bam Bigelow vs Williams & Albright & Terry Gordy match from the St. Paul Civic Center on January 20. Williams ends up getting the win for his team, when he pins Hansen after a diving elbowsmash from the second turnbuckle. After the match, Hansen attacks Williams with his cowbell, then busts Williams open after slamming his head into the steel ringpost.
Hansen says that Doc got lucky in that match, he had a handful of Stan’s trunks, but he says he was the one who walked out looking like a winner. He laughs about Williams lying on the floor, covered in his own blood! Hansen says that he just got back from a tour of Japan, where he completely dominated everyone he stepped in the ring with, and says that now he’s back, and ready to kick Steve Williams backside yet again!
RICK MARTEL VS. ROCKY KERNODLE. Martel gets the win by submission with the Quebec Crab. Late in the match, JIMMY HART shows up at ringside, apparently scouting Martel.
After the match, LARRY NELSON talks with Martel in the ring. Jimmy Hart, who was still at ringside as the match ended, joined them in the ring as well. Martel tells Hart that he’s going to enjoy watching Kamala squash Sgt. Slaughter like the insect that he is in tonight’s main event. Martel then talks about his match next week with Slaughter’s friend Jimmy Snuka. Martel says that the Superfly was great once, but his time has passed, he’s washed up, and next week, Martel is going to show everyone why he is the future of this sport.
Hart agrees, and says that he has a business matter to discuss with Martel, but doesn’t want to do it in front of Nelson, and these idiot fans. Hart and Martel then leave the ring together.
MAGNUM TA is standing by with Paul Ellering and the Road Warriors: Hawk & Animal. Ellering responds to Matsuda’s comments earlier, and says that Hawk and Animal may not have the technical expertise of Tenryu and Tsuruta, but they’re bigger, stronger and a hell of a lot tougher!
Animal says that he and Hawk love getting in the ring with guys like Tsuruta and Tenryu, who think they’re better than everyone else, and knockin’ them down a few pegs!
Hawk asks Magnum how well Tsuruta and Tenryu are gonna be able to wrestle with broken arms and legs!
SGT. SLAUGHTER VS. KAMALA (w/ Jimmy Hart & Kimchee). This is about what you would expect from these two, as any thought of scientific wrestling goes right out the window, and these two simply pummel each other. Kamala gains an early advantage, and spends the next few minutes choking, gouging, stomping and biting the Sarge! Kamala seems to have the match well in hand, but when he runs the ropes and attempts a splash, Slaughter gets his knees up. Slaughter then makes a comeback, and takes the fight to the Ugandan warrior, stunning him with a flurry of rights and lefts that leave the big man staggering around the ring.
Moments later, Sarge connects with the SLAUGHTER CANNON! Slaughter looks to be on his way to victory, but Paul Orndorff hits the ring! Orndorff attacks Slaughter from behind, but before too much damage can be done, Jimmy Snuka and the man who came out of the crowd last week, hit the ring and help Sarge run the heels off.
LARRY NELSON climbs into the ring and talks with Slaughter, Snuka and the man that Slaughter introduces as Cpl. Kirchner. Sarge says that Kirchner is a former Army paratrooper, and very close friend of his. Sarge shakes Kirchner’s hand, and says he’s happy to have Kirchner here in the AWA.
Kirchner says he’s happy to be here, in the major leagues of professional wrestling, and says that he’s got Slaughter’s back!
Trongard wraps things up, and hypes next week’s show, which will feature Jimmy Snuka facing former AWA champion Rick Martel in the main event!
