AWA “PRO WRESTLING USA”
Airs Friday, March 2, 1989 on Superstation WGN
Broadcast live from the Brown County Arena in Green Bay, Wisconsin
“From coast to coast, border to border, and continent to continent, this is the AWA, the major leagues of professional wrestling!”
Rod Trongard opens the show, and welcomes his co-host Diamond Dallas Page.
Trongard says that, starting next weekend, Pro Wrestling USA will be moving from Friday evenings to Saturday evenings at 6pm, right here on Superstation WGN!
They talk about tonight’s show, which will see Dallas’ team, the Samoan SWAT Team, along with their cousin, Tama, in 6-man tag team action against the Fantastics and Jackie Fulton! This match came about after the Samoans bloodied young Jackie on TV a few weeks ago, and Bobby and Tommy demanded this match as a result. Page says that they can kill three birds with one stone tonight, and says that the fans are going to witness the end of the Not-So-Fantastics!
We’ll see Bret Hart defend the AWA TV title against the former Tag Team champ, Jumpin’ Jim Brunzell!
And, the feature bout will see Sgt. Slaughter and Jimmy Snuka take on Hart Foundation members Paul Orndorff and Jim Neidhart!
GARY ALBRIGHT VS. THE SUPER ASSASSIN. The masked man jumps Albright before the bell, and this gives him an early advantage. It’s short-lived, though, as Albright turns things around and gets the win after dumping the Super Assassin on the back of his head with a brutal German suplex.
Before the start of the next match, Trongard and Page talk about former AWA World champion Rick Martel. We saw Martel return to the AWA in January, but it wasn’t the same man that the fans went crazy for when he held the AWA title. Since returning, Martel has become increasingly arrogant, blaming the fans for turning their backs on him after losing the AWA title, and now the once-beloved French Canadian wrestler seems to take great pleasure in getting under the skin of the fans.
RICK MARTEL VS. BRIAN BLAIR. Martel has his toughest challenge to date as he takes on one-half of the Killer Bees. Blair has been around for a while, and he knows what to expect from Martel. These two give us an exciting, fast-paced match with lots of back and forth action, but in the end, Martel hits a low blow, out of view of the referee, and then goes to work on Blair. Rick softens up the back of the Killer Bee, and eventually locks on the Boston Crab, which Martel has insisted the announcers refer to as the “Quebec” Crab, and gets the submission victory.
Localized promos air for upcoming shows, including tomorrow night in Milwaukee, and next Sunday night at the St. Paul Civic Center.
Larry Nelson is in the ring with Mr. Matsuda, Genichiro Tenryu and Jumbo Tsuruta. Matsuda says that last week on TV, Paul Ellering had the audacity to interrupt his interview time, and claim to have some competition for Tenryu and Tsuruta. He demands that Ellering come out.
Ellering makes his way to the ring, alone. Matsuda smiles, and says that obviously Ellering was lying about having some competition for them. As Ellering climbs into the ring, Matsuda, Tenryu and Tsuruta move menancingly towards him . . . when suddenly Black Sabbath’s "Iron Man" begins to play, and THE ROAD WARRIORS rush the ring!
Matsuda and his team beat a hasty retreat as Hawk and Animal jump into the ring. Ellering asks for the mic from Larry Nelson, and says that Matsuda wanted competition? Well now he’s going to regret ever opening his mouth!
Hawk says that when he and Animal get ahold of Tsuruta and Tenryu, they’re gonna teach them the true meaning of PAIN!
Trongard can hardly believe it, the Road Warriors are here in the AWA!
Page says Hawk and Animal are both a few fries short of a happy meal, and should be locked up in a padded room in some institution somewhere, not running around the AWA!
Trongard wonders if Page is just worried that Hawk and Animal might set their sights on his Samoan SWAT Team.
Page’s eyes go wide at the thought, but then he composes himself, and says that Hawk and Animal will have their hands full with Matsuda’s Yamazaki Corporation, but if they are stupid enough to get in the ring with Samu and Fatu, it will be the biggest mistake those muscleheads ever made!
AWA WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP:
BRET HART (w/ Jimmy Hart) (champ) VS. JIM BRUNZELL. Brunzell gives Bret all he can handle here, but Bret proves to be the better wrestler on this night, as he eventually gets the win by submission with the Scorpion leglock.
TOMMY ROGERS & BOBBY & JACKIE FULTON VS. THE SAMOAN SWAT TEAM: SAMU & FATU & TAMA. There’s a lot of bad blood here, the Samoans and Fantastics already had a bloody, violent rivalry going on, but the Samoans crossed the line when they battered and bloodied Bobby Fulton’s younger brother, Jackie. All six men brawl in the ring for the first few minutes, before referee Gary DeRusha is able to get order restored. The Samoans constantly double and triple team their opponents, leading to plenty of brawls with all six men in the ring together.
Late in the match, the Fantastics gain the upper hand, and appear to be on their way to victory. When Tommy and Bobby hit the Fantastic Flip on Samu, Dallas Page is beside himself on commentary. Suddenly, Page jumps up and rushes to the ring!
DDP slides into the ring and breaks up Bobby Fulton’s pinfall attempt on Samu. Referee DeRusha calls for the bell, and awards the match, by DQ, to the Fantastics and Jackie Fulton!
When the Fantastics confront DDP, they’re jumped from behind by the SST and Tama! They pummel Rogers and the Fultons, eventually leaving them lying in the ring, before following DDP to the back.
Trongard, now alone at the announce desk, says that on Saturday, March 31, the AWA will be holding a big event, “the Brawl in St. Paul”, from the St. Paul Civic Center, and it will air live on Superstation WGN! He says that so far, one match has been announced, a big tag team match between AWA Triple Crown champ Stan Hansen and Big Van Vader taking on Steve Williams and Gary Albright!
We see highlight videos of the two teams. Hansen and Vader tear their way through their opponents, leaving a trail of broken bodies in their wake. Williams and Albright are just as dominant, but rely on wrestling ability to overpower their opponents.
SGT. SLAUGHTER & JIMMY “SUPERFLY” SNUKA VS. “MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF & JIM NEIDHART (w/ Jimmy Hart). The war between Slaughter and Orndorff has been raging since last Fall, and when Snuka returned to the AWA in February, he involved himself in the feud almost immediately, joining up with Slaughter to do battle with his old rival Orndorff! These two teams tear into each other as soon as the bell sounds, and the match is wild and wooly from bell to bell!
In the end, Slaughter connects with the Slaughter Cannon on Neidhart and covers him for the 1, 2, 3!
Sarge and Snuka’s celebration is short-lived, though, as Bret Hart and Kamala hit the ring and help Orndorff and Neidhart gang up on Slaughter and Snuka!
With Sarge and the Superfly in a bad way, a man makes his way out of the crowd, grabs a chair, and jumps into the ring! The man clears the ring, swinging the chair wildly, sending the Hart Foundation heading for higher ground. The man then checks on Sarge and Snuka as the show comes to an end.
Trongard wraps things up, and hypes next week’s show.
