CWA Championship Wrestling TV 12/16/1988
Championship Wrestling opening:
Championship Wrestling intro video rolls with footage of ‘The Russian Nightmare’ Nikita Koloff, Terry Gordy, The Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, 'Superstar' Bill Dundee, Bam Bam Bigelow, Dutch Mantell and other stars of Power Pro Wrestling. Playing over this action is the classic disco version of ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ from 2001 A Space Odyssey.
The camera then shifts to Lance Russell and Dave Brown sitting behind the desk, and in front of the CWA logo, in the WMCTV Channel 5 studios in Memphis, TN for another edition of Championship Wrestling.
LANCE RUSSELL: “Yelllllllo everybody. Welcome to Championship Wrestling. Boy, it sure is nice to say that again, Davey.”
DAVE BROWN: “Boy, it sure is Lance. And my goodness, we have two incredible shows coming up here in Memphis over the holiday period.”
Eddie Marlin joins Lance Russell and Dave Brown to open the show and they run down the results from last Monday night at the Ellis Auditorium. This coming Monday night, we will crown the CWA Unified Heavyweight Title as PPW Champion Terry Gordy, Southeastern Champion Wendell Cooley, Florida Champion Chris Adams and ‘The Russian Nightmare’ take part part in a one night tournament.
And then on Christmas Eve, CWA returns to the Mid-South Coliseum for Christmas Chaos, where we will have the Rage in the Cage match pitting Robert Fuller, Jimmy Golden and Mr. Olympia up against a team captained by ‘Dirty’ Dutch Mantell.
Also on Christmas Chaos, there will be a main event tag team match where Freebird Terry Gordy and Bam Bam Bigelow will battle ‘The Russian Nightmare’ Nikita Koloff and ‘The Universal Heartthrob’ Austin Idol. If either Gordy or Koloff win the CWA Unified Title this weekend, their title will be on the line if they pin or submit on Christmas Eve.
Now, Mr. Marlin promised that match will have a special referee, and he’s pleased to announce that the original Fabulous One, Jackie Fargo, will return to Memphis as the special guest referee in that main event tag team match.
Lance Russell and Dave Brown are bowled over by that big announcement, and thank Eddie Marlin for joining them before sending us to commercial break.

Lance Russell and Dave Brown welcomed us back to Championship Wrestling, and they are joined by ‘Superstar’ Bill Dundee. Before we hear from Bill, let’s go back to last week and re-live the shocking events that transpired with the Dundees and the Stud Stable.
[VTR]
12/9/1988
There’s a bit of a commotion here as ‘Superstar’ Bill Dundee makes his way out to the WMC5 studio, looking slightly puzzled.
The Superstar wonders if perhaps he’s heard incorrectly because it sounds like Robert Fuller has decided to bench him from the Rage in the Cage match.
Fuller puts up his hands up and tries to assure Dundee that it’s not like that, he just wants to make sure his teammates are people he can count on most. And quite frankly, Bill Dundee hasn’t got the best win-loss record lately.
The Superstar snickers and asks how many times he’s been the one to make sure that Fuller and Golden hold onto those Southern Tag Team Championship belts around their waists?
And more than that, Bill Dundee asks Lance Russell to remind Robert Fuller that there’s nobody who’s won more cage matches here in Memphis than The Superstar. Lance agrees with that assessment.
Fuller places his hand on Dundee’s shoulder and tells The Superstar that he knows the way it goes in the Stud Stable: Robert Fuller is the man in charge and he makes the decisions!
The decision has been made. Bill Dundee snickers again as he scratches his chin. Well if that’s the way it’s going to be, Dundee says, then he quits the Stud Stable!
Robert Fuller and Jamie Dundee try to talk him down as Bill Dundee is getting more and more heated, ranting that he’s not going to be treated like a second banana by anyone, no less a pompous goof that isn't fit to shine his boots, like Fuller!
That remark leads Jimmy Golden to give Bill Dundee a hard shove! Dundee comes right back with a big shove on Golden, as Jamie Dundee steps in between and tries to play peacemaker between the two sides.
Robert Fuller is trying to talk down everyone as Bill Dundee furiously tries get his son out of the way so he can get in the faces of the Stud Stable. Jamie finally manages to talk his dad down.
Just as it looks like cooler heads have prevailed and the Dundees turn to leave, Jimmy Golden and Mr. Olympia jump The Superstar from behind! Bill Dundee is fighting both, and holding his own as Jamie looks distressed at this in-fighting.
However, Jamie’s concern turns to anger when Robert Fuller lands a knee across his father’s back! Now all three Stud Stable members are attacking Bill Dundee on the floor of the WMCTV studio.
Now, Jamie Dundee jumps on Robert Fuller’s back and starts slugging away at him! Fuller reaches up, grabs Jamie by the neck and vicious hurls him onto floor of the studio with a sickening thud.
Mr. Olympia and Jimmy Golden have thrown Bill Dundee into the ring and they working him over two-on-one. Jimmy Golden eventually ties up The Superstar in the ropes.
The Stud Stable then regroup on the floor as Bill Dundee struggles to free himself. Jamie Dundee is rolling around the floor in pain, until Jimmy Golden pulls the young manager up by his neck.
Lance Russell is appealing to the Stud Stable that enough is enough, and that there’s no cause for this! Nevertheless, Jimmy Golden hoists Jamie Dundee into position for a piledriver on the floor.
Robert Fuller is on the apron and he leaps off. The Stud Stable have just spiked Jamie Dundee on the floor of the WMCTV studio with a pile-driver! And fans, Jamie Dundee isn’t moving here.
Lance Russell is calling for help, but remember, the Dundees have earned themselves absolutely no friends in the locker-room besides the Stud Stable in recent months.
Now it’s Mr. Olympia who has Jamie Dundee up, and hoists him into position for a suplex. Fuller is again on the apron, and flies off for a spike-brainbuster on the floor to Jamie Dundee.
Enough is enough, even though we’re talking about the Dundees, and out come ‘Bullet’ Bob Armstrong, the Wild-Eyed Southern Boys and the Dirty White Boy to begin brawling with the Stud Stable.
Robert Fuller understands more than anyone that discretion is the better form of valor, and calls off his Stud Stable toward the dressing room. It’s a frantic scene as Bob Armstrong and Tracy Smothers free Bill Dundee from the ropes, and he darts to the floor.
Tears are welling up in Bill Dundee’s eyes as he watches medical personnel arrive and load the unconscious Jamie Dundee onto a stretcher. The Superstar rushes with the medics out of the studio, presumably rushing Jamie to Baptist Memorial Hospital.
[End VTR]
As we go back live to the studio on Championship Wrestling, ‘Superstar’ Bill Dundee is visibly upset as Lance Russell firstly asks about Jamie Dundee’s condition.
Bill explains that Jamie was in the hospital for most of the week with a concussion and a fractured neck. His boy has a long road to recovery, and Dundee can’t help but blame himself.
The Superstar never wanted his son to follow in his footsteps because wrestling is a tough life. To see his son worked over like a nothing more than a stray dog last week was the most awful thing that Bill has seen in his entire life.
So while Bill Dundee takes responsibility and will have to live with his son’s injury, he’s damn sure going to make Robert Fuller and the Stud Stable pay dearly. That’s why he wants to speak to Dutch Mantell right now.
There’s a bit of uncertainty until ‘Dirty’ Dutch Mantell makes his way out into the studio, looks around at the studio audience, who are clearly on edge.
Bill Dundee promises that he wants to do is talk, and Dutch throws his arms up and walks over to the announce position. Lance Russell reiterates that he doesn’t want any trouble out here.
The Superstar makes it clear that the only people in trouble are the Stud Stable because he is going to make it is his life’s mission to run the Stud Stable out of the CWA and wrestling in general.
There’s only way to make that happen. Dundee knows that Dutch Mantell doesn’t trust him, and he doesn’t exactly trust The Dutchman either, but they have one thing in common: they hate the Stud Stable.
Bill Dundee won’t beat around the bush. He wants in on the Rage in the Cage match. Dutch shrugs as he hears a mixed reaction from the fans in the studio.
Dutch Mantell assures The Superstar that he does feel bad for him, in spite of all of the rotten things that the Dundees have done recently. Nobody deserves a sneak attack like the one Jamie Dundee got last week.
But, The Dutchman says, Bill Dundee is right when he says they don’t trust each other. In a match as sadistic as the Rage in the Cage, you need partners you can trust… so thanks but no thanks!
Bill Dundee is getting heated as he tells Dutch that nobody has as much hatred for the Stud Stable as he does right now. There will be no partner with more drive to punish Fuller and his gang!
Dutch understands Dundee’s feelings, but The Superstar will just have to get in line to settle his grudge with the Stud Stable on his own time because Mantell doesn’t want him as a partner for Rage in the Cage.
The Dutchman walks off to the dressing room as Bill Dundee stews at ringside. Dundee promises Lance that whether he’s officially in the match or note, he’s going to make his presence felt at Rage in the Cage.
OPENING CONTEST: ‘SUPERSTAR’ BILL DUNDEE VS. TONY FALK
Bill Dundee scored the win on Tony Falk in just 2:29 when he walloped Falk with a clothesline and then climbed up top for the Bomb’s Away splash for the three count. Dundee is merciless as he puts away Fa;k in record time, before storming out of the ring.
Lance Russell announces that we’ll see a preview of Rage in the Cage later in the show when Dutch Mantell battles Jimmy Golden right here on Championship Wrestling later on.

Championship Wrestling came back from commercial break with a replay of ‘Superstar’ Bill Dundee coming off the top rope with the Bomb’s Away splash on Tony Falk.
Freebird Terry Gordy and Bam Bam Bigelow are standing by with Lance Russell as we come back to the studio on Championship Wrestling. Gordy tells Lance Russell that this Monday night, he will walk out of the Ellis Auditorium as the CWA Unified Heavyweight Champion, and then himself and Bigelow will finally run Nikita Koloff out of the CWA on Christmas Eve.
Bam Bam Bigelow is still angry that he was left out of the tournament. As far as he’s concerned, he’s the only one going into the Christmas Chaos tag team match with no real incentive since he knows Terry will win Monday night's tournament. Bigelow wants a guarantee from Gordy that he’ll get the first shot at the title after Christmas Chaos.
Terry Gordy hems and haws, and says that they can work that out later. Bigelow isn’t budging and says he wants the same guarantee that Austin Idol got from Nikita Koloff. Finally, Gordy agrees to give his partner a shot at the title. The two bicker as they walk to the dressing room.
MATCH #2: DR. TOM PRICHARD, DICK MURDOCH AND BLACK BART w/ Miss Texas VS. BART BATTEN, BRAD BATTEN AND BOBBY BLAZE
Dick Murdoch scores the victory for his team when he plants Brad (?) Batten in 7:12 with a brainbuster for the pin-fall. The Texas contingent have the studio riled up by waving the Texan flag and jawing with the fans throughout the match. On the opposing side, Bobby Blaze looks really impressive as he scores near falls on both Black Bart and Tom Prichard at various points. However, the Texans score the win.
After the match. The Texans make their way over to the broadcasting desk to speak with Lance Russell. Dr. Tom wants to know if this was really the best that Memphis to offer?
Dr. Tom does his best Roddy Piper impression as he boasts about his trio being tougher than anyone in Tennessee simply because they’re from Texas. They’re just bred tougher!
Lance Russell rolls his eyes and he admonishes Tom Prichard that he’s not exactly going to earn himself a lot of support around here. Miss Texas interrupts and asks why Lance thinks they’d want support from these hicks in Memphis?
Lance Russell shrugs with a classic “Aww, come one!”, and says he’s not going to stand out here and argue with the Texas contingent. Dr. Tom makes it clear that the Texans are here to prove their superiority, and that’s exactly what they’re going to do!

“WE-HE-HE-HE-ELL,” Robert Fuller chuckles before he reminds Lance that Bill Dundee stood out here earlier and admitted that only was to blame for what happened to Jamie. And he’s right!
Fuller says a great man once again that when your champion race horse breaks his leg, you shoot that horse! And Bill Dundee is a broken down race horse - and his son is nothing but a never-was geek!
This brings out Bill Dundee, who vaults himself onto Robert Fuller, and they fall on top of the announce desk. Dundee and Fuller are pounding away at each other… until Jimmy Golden and Mr. Olympia arrive.
Jimmy Golden and Mr. Olympia collar Bill Dundee, as a furious Robert Fuller stands back up and paintbrushes Dundee with a right hand. Golden then scoops up Dundee and slams him on the studio floor.

Championship Wrestling returns with slow-motion footage of ‘Superstar’ Bill Dundee launching himself at Robert Fuller.
Lance Russell and Dave Brown are back live in the Channel 5 studio with a pair who returned to CWA last weekend, ‘International Hustler’ Rip Rogers and his valet Miss Brenda Britton.
Russell mentions that Rip scored an impressive win over the up-and-comer Jerry Lynn last Monday night and is on his way into contention for Jeff Jarrett’s Southern Jr. Heavyweight Title.
Rogers, first of all, wants to once again warn the humanoids here in Memphis not to refer Miss Brenda as “fleabag” or they won’t have the pleasure of seeing him in action!
Now as far as Jeff Jarrett goes, it’s clear that he has both Jerry Jarrett and Eddie Marlin protecting him so he doesn’t have to face real challengers for the Southern Jr. Heavyweight Title.
Lance scoffs at that and mentions that this Monday night, Jeff Jarrett will defend his title against Hiroshi Hase, one of the most decorated light heavyweights in Japan.
Rip Rogers laughs and says he’s beat Hase more than a dozen times in his tours of Japan, a claim which both Lance Russell and Dave Brown highly doubt!
Lance mentions that Rogers will have his own tough bout this Monday night when he squares off with The Z-Man Tom Zenk, who is making his first appearance in the CWA.
Rogers brags that only will he defeat Tom Zenk on Monday night, he’ll defeat him under 10 minutes. That’s a promise from the International Hustler and that means it’s as good as gold. Lance sends us up to the ring.
MATCH #3: ‘THE WORLD’S STRONGEST MAN’ DOUG FURNAS VS. ROD PRICE
