Wrestling Observer news and notes... In the Memphis area, Bam Bam Bigelow and Freebird Terry Gordy formed an alliance in order to get the PPW Heavyweight Title off Nikita Koloff. Koloff took a series of tag team partners in main event matches in Memphis, including 'Bullet' Bob Armstrong, the Dirty White Boy and 'Wildcat' Wendell Cooley. In those matches, both Gordy and Bigelow scored pin-fall victories against Koloff. However, when it it came time for either Bigelow or Gordy getting the title shot, the two faced each other on Championship Wrestling on November 18 to see which one would get the shot. However, this time it was Nikita Koloff who interfered and laid both Bigelow and Gordy out with Russian Sickles. Jerry Jarrett was left with the dilemma as to who the number-one contender really was, so be booked a special card on Thanksgiving night where Gordy would battle Bigelow again, then the winner would face Nikita Koloff that same time. On Thanksgiving night, Terry Gordy manages to score the pin on Bam Bam Bigelow only after Bigelow missed a flying headbutt off the top rope. The tension was teased after the match, and carried over to Bam Bam Bigelow making his way out when referee Jerry Calhoun was knocked out. In the ring, Nikita Koloff and Terry Gordy took each other down when they bumped heads coming off the ropes. Bigelow scaled the top and pointed to Gordy, to the cheers of the fans. However, Bigelow leapt off the top rope and connected with the flying headbutt on Nikita Koloff! Bigelow then rolled out to the floor as Terry Gordy put his arm over Nikita Koloff for the three count when Jerry Calhoun came to. Terry Gordy is the new PPW Heavyweight Champion!
The situation between Austin Idol, Tommy Rich and Dick Slater came to a head in mid-September when Randy Hales came out on Channel 5 to show footage shot in the locker-room of Tommy Rich handing over cash to Dick Slater. A furious Tommy Rich came out and actually attacked Randy Hales, until Austin Idol arrived to brawl with Wildfire around the Channel 5 studios. However, Rich would gain a pin-fall victory over Idol at The Big One in early October when Dick Slater once again interfered! Idol realized this situation had come to a head and begged Jerry Jarrett to put him in a ring with both Dick Slater and Tommy Rich. Jarrett agreed, signing a tag team match where Idol could choose anyone he wanted. Idol was intent on going into the match on his own, but surprisingly young Jeff Jarrett asked Idol to be his tag team partner! Idol and Jarrett went to a double disqualification with Slater and Rich in Memphis. Idol asked Jerry Jarrett for one more rematch, this time he'd agreed to leave Power Pro Wrestling if he lost. Tommy Rich and Dick Slater were all too quick to sign that contract, only to learn that they'd also be putting their own careers on the line inside a steel cage match against Austin Idol and Jeff Jarrett. In that steel cage match on Halloween night, Austin Idol and Jeff Jarrett won a bloody brawl where Idol forced Tommy Rich to submit to the Las Vegas Leglock while Jarrett held off Slater. Austin Idol has won the War of Attrition.
The battle between Robert Fuller's Stud Stable and the Armstrongs, Dirty White Boy and Dutch Mantell has continued to rage. Fuller and Golden have swapped the Southern Tag Team Titles against The Wild-Eyed Southern Boys twice over the last three months, with the Stud Stable most recently stealing the belts back after Fuller drilled Smothers with one of the titles behind the referee's back. Dutch Mantell has been trying to devise a match to settle this feud, and has said he'll announce it on the December 9 edition of Championship Wrestling.
'The World's Strongest Man' Doug Furnas came away victorious after a series of matches with 'The Missouri Tiger' Jeff Gaylord... Southern Jr. Heavyweight Champion Shane Douglas has had a serious of impressive matches against 'Magic Man' Pat Rose, but has managed to hang on to the title... Downtown Bruno's Bruiser Brothers have had non-conclusive brawls with the Fantastics all over the territory.
