“From coast to coast, border to border, and continent to continent, this is the AWA, the major leagues of professional wrestling!”
Rod Trongard opens the show, and welcomes his co-host Diamond Dallas Page!
Tonight, the Young Lions Cup continues, as Fuji Yamada faces David Finlay! Plus, Paul Orndorff, Johnny Smith and the Can-Am Express will be in action! The feature bout will see Sgt. Slaughter face Black Bart in a non-title match!
Trongard talks about a tag team match that took place last Friday night in St. Paul, between the team of Sgt. Slaughter and Terry Taylor, and the duo of Paul Orndorff and Bob Orton Jr.
VTR: Slaughter/Taylor vs Orndorff/Orton, 11/3/88 in St. Paul, MN, JIP:
After more than 20 minutes of hard-hitting, back and forth action, Slaughter and Taylor get the win when Taylor pins Orton after hitting him with the diving forearm smash off the ropes.
After the bout, Orton and Orndorff attack Slaughter and Taylor. Orton throws Taylor through the ropes, then runs him into the guardrail, knocking him down. At that point, Jimmy Hart starts motioning to the back . . . and we see a masked man leading THE UGANDAN WARRIOR KAMALA to the ring! Kamala enters the ring, and joins Paul Orndorff in double-teaming Sgt. Slaughter!
As Orton continues to pummel Taylor outside the ring, opening up a nasty cut on his forehead, Orndorff drops Slaughter with a Piledriver inside the ring! With Slaughter flat on his back on the mat, Kamala goes to the top rope . . . and delivers a splash!
END VTR
Page is laughing as the clip ends, and says that Slaughter and Taylor conspired to cheat Orndorff out of the Americas title a few weeks back on TV, but Orndorff is a man of action, and he made sure that Slaughter and Taylor paid dearly for their treachery!
Trongard says that it looks like Jimmy Hart has brought the Ugandan warrior Kamala to the AWA, and that could mean trouble for everyone!
KAMALA (w/ Jimmy Hart & Kimchee) VS. JAKE MILLIMAN. Poor Jake Milliman ends up being Kamala’s first victim here in the AWA! Kamala pounces on Milliman, moving surprisingly quick for a man his size, and he uses chops and headbutts to put Milliman on the mat, then stomps away at the Milkman, before going to the top rope and hitting a devastating splash. The referee could count to 100 after that, and Kamala gets the win.
The Ugandan headhunter continues to assault Milliman after the match, but Hart and Kimchee are able to get him to leave the ring.
NON-TITLE MATCH:
SGT. SLAUGHTER VS. BLACK BART. Slaughter has his hands full the rugged Texan, and they treat the fans to a real slobberknocker! Late in the match, Slaughter gains the upper hand . . . but out comes Paul Orndorff!
Orndorff taunts Slaughter, which gives Black Bart a chance to take over. He pummels Slaughter, but Sarge again battles back. He wears Bart down, and eventually hits the Slaughter Cannon! As Sarge is about to apply the Cobra Clutch, Orndorff picks up the Americas title belt, and climbs up onto the apron. Slaughter comes over and argues with Orndorff . . . and Paul blasts Slaughter right in the face with the title belt! This is right in front of the referee, who immediately calls for the bell, and awards the match to Slaughter by DQ.
Orndorff jumps into the ring, and puts the boots to Slaughter, then drops the belt onto the mat, and starts to set Slaughter up for a Piledriver right onto the belt! Fortunately for the Sarge, a group of wrestlers and officials hit the ring in time to stop Orndorff.
MAGNUM TA is backstage with the AWA World Tag Team Champions Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart, along with their manager Jimmy Hart. Magnum asks them about the 10-team tag tournament coming up on Christmas night in St. Paul. Not only will the winning team claim the $20,000 that is up for grabs, but they will also receive a shot at Bret and Neidhart and the World Tag Team titles.
Bret says they’re not worried, while there are 10 top teams entering the tournament, not one of those teams stands a chance of beating them! He mentions some of the teams that will take part, like the British Bulldogs, who Bret says they’ve already beat so many times he’s lost count, or the Can-Am Express, undoubtably a talented team, but they aren’t even in the same league as him and Neidhart!
Magnum mentions some of the other teams that will take part in the tournament, including Jim Brunzell and Brian Blair, the Killer Bees. He says that Brunzell was one half of arguably the greatest tag team in the AWA’s history, the High Flyers, and he and Blair have had plenty of success as a team as well.
Neidhart laughs, and says the Bees are just a couple of pests, and if they wrestle the Bees, he and Bret are gonna squash them!
THE CAN-AM EXPRESS: TOM ZENK & PHIL LAFLEUR VS. MIKE VACHON & TARUS BULBA. Zenk and Lafleur make short work of their opponents, showing that they’re ready for the tag team tournament on Christmas night. The Can-Ams get the win when Zenk pins Bulba with a diving bodypress from the top rope.
After the match, Zenk gets on the house mic and says he hopes all the fans will come out to the St. Paul Civic Center on Christmas night to support him and Lafleur in the tournament.
Trongard and Page talk about the Young Lions Cup tournament that has been going on for the past few weeks. Trongard says that the six wrestlers involved have given us some great matches, and he expects that to continue as the tournament progresses. DDP says he’s been impressed, although obviously none of these six wrestlers measure up to his Playboys, he’s enjoyed the matches in the tournament so far.
Trongard says each of the wrestlers have a couple of tournament matches under their belts now, and a graphic pops up on the screen showing the standings so far:
Owen Hart: 3 points
Tiger Mask: 3 points
Fuji Yamada: 2 points
Wild Pegasus: 2 points
David Finlay: 0 points
Johnny Smith: 0 points
Trongard says that while Finlay and Smith have yet to pick up any points, there are still plenty of matches to go, and anything can happen!
YOUNG LIONS CUP:
FUJI YAMADA VS. DAVID FINLAY. Finlay, the rugged Irishman, is looking for his first win of the tournament against Yamada, who’s got 2 points so far. Unfortunately for Finlay, despite a valiant effort, things just don’t go his way. Yamada again unleashes his unbelievable arial move, the Shooting Star Press, and gets the 1, 2, 3. This win puts Yamada into first place in the tournament with 4 points.
“MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Jimmy Hart) VS. JOHNNY SMITH. Orndorff taunts Smith early on, and takes great pleasure in toying with the youngster, but Smith won’t stand for that, and he fires back, stunning Orndorff with a flurry of rights and lefts! Smith drops Orndorff with a clothesline, then goes for the cover, but Orndorff kicks out at 1, and then hits a low blow that puts Smith on the mat. Orndorff isn’t smiling anymore, as he viciously pummels Smith, stomping away at him. A moment later, Orndorff cinches Smith up, and drops him on his head with the Piledriver.
Orndorff covers Smith, but at the last second, he pulls Smith up by his hair! Orndorff says that he’s not finished with the youngster yet, and on commentary, DDP says that Smith tried to make a fool of Orndorff, and now he’s going to pay for that, just like Sgt. Slaughter did!
Orndorff delivers a second Piledriver, but again, he pulls Smith up, and signals for one more!
Trongard says that speaking of Slaughter . . . here comes the Sarge!
Sgt. Slaughter hits the ring and immediately jumps on Orndorff, pummeling him! The referee calls for the bell, awarding the match to Orndorff by DQ!
Johnny Smith is helped from the ring as Slaughter and Orndorff trade punches in the middle of the ring.
Trongard and Page quickly wrap things up as Slaughter and Orndorff continue to brawl as the show comes to an end.
