AWA “PRO WRESTLING USA”
Airdate: Friday, October 27, 1988
Broadcast nationwide on Superstation WGN
Taped October 25, 1988 at the Wilkens Auditorium in St. Paul, MN
“From coast to coast, border to border, and continent to continent, this is the AWA, the major leagues of professional wrestling!”
Rod Trongard opens the show, and welcomes his co-host Diamond Dallas Page!
Tonight, the first two matches of the Young Lions Cup, as Tiger Mask takes on David Finlay, and Owen Hart faces Wild Pegasus! Jumbo Tsuruta and Genichiro Tenryu meet former World Tag Team champions the British Bulldogs, and speaking of Tsuruta and Tenryu, Mr. Fuji has sold the contracts of Tsuruta, Tenryu and Toshiaki Kawada to an organization known as the Yamazaki Corporation, based out of Tokyo. A representative of the Yamazaki Corporation will be on Pro Wrestling USA next week!
Plus, our main event this week, Americas champion Sgt. Slaughter defends the belt against Bob Orton Jr of the Hart Foundation!
YOUNG LIONS CUP:
TIGER MASK VS. DAVID FINLAY. Finlay shows that he can hold his own with the innovative Tiger Mask, but in the end, the masked man pins Finlay with a Tiger Suplex to earn 2 points in the tournament.
Magnum TA is standing by with The British Bulldogs: Davey Boy Smith & Dynamite Kid. The Bulldogs talk about losing the World Tag Team titles to Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart. Davey Boy is confident that they will regain the belts, and their quest begins tonight against Tenryu and Tsuruta.
“MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Jimmy Hart) VS. JAKE MILLIMAN. Orndorff is in a foul mood tonight, even moreso than usual, and after getting the pinfall following the Piledriver, Orndorff pulls Milliman up, and delivers a second Piledriver. Milliman has to be helped from the ring.
After Milliman is helped from the ring, Orndorff and Jimmy Hart are joined by ring announcer Larry Nelson. Nelson talks about Orndorff losing the Americas title to Sgt. Slaughter, and failing to win it back two weeks ago. Orndorff grabs the house mic from Nelson, and tells Larry that if he doesn’t show him the respect he deserves, Nelson will suffer the same fate as that chump he just beat. Orndorff says that the only reason he didn’t win back the belt last week is because the referee was obviously biased towards Slaughter. It’s not Orndorff’s fault he knocked Slaughter senseless with one punch, but the referee accusing him of using a foreign object and giving the belt back to Slaughter is a miscarriage of justice!
Hart says that he’s once again had to get his legal team involved, and they’re looking into a possible defamation lawsuit against the official and the AWA. He says that Nick Bockwinkel could avoid all that by simply doing the right thing and returning the belt to Orndorff.
Magnum TA is standing by with Triple Crown champion Stan Hansen. Hansen is chewing a big chunk of tobacco, and Magnum becomes increasingly disgusted by Hansen repeatedly spitting on the floor. Hansen rants and raves, saying that he doesn’t think there’s anyone in the AWA that’s tough enough to take these belts from him. He says that everyone talked about what a big deal Steve Williams is, but they saw what happened when he got in the ring with Hansen. Hansen says that anyone who thinks they have what it takes to take the title from him, just sign on the dotted line, but he warns that they’re putting their career in jeopardy!
THE CAN-AM EXPRESS: TOM ZENK & PHIL LAFLEUR VS. TIO & TAPU. Zenk and Lafleur get the win when Zenk pins Tapu with a crossbody from the top rope.
YOUNG LIONS CUP:
OWEN HART VS. WILD PEGASUS. We’re treated to an exciting, fast-paced match here! Both men are considered future superstars, but it’s Hart that gets the win here, hitting a missile dropkick from the top rope for the pinfall, to earn 2 points in the tournament.
Magnum TA is standing by with AWA TV champion Terry Taylor. Magnum talks a little bit about Taylor’s involvement at the end of last week’s main event.
Footage is shown of Taylor coming out last week and informing the referee of Orndorff’s use of a foreign object against Sgt. Slaughter. This led to Orndorff and Bob Orton ganging up on Taylor and giving him a beating as the show ended.
Taylor says the Hart Foundation are cowards, the only time they can get the upper hand like that is when it’s 2 or 3 or 4 on 1! He says that he’ll be watching Slaughter’s back tonight in the match with Orton, and challenges Orton and Orndorff to face him and Slaughter in a tag team match.
JUMBO TSURUTA & GENICHIRO TENRYU VS. THE BRITISH BULLDOGS: DAVEY BOY SMITH & DYNAMITE KID. On commentary, Trongard talks about the fact that Mr. Fuji sold Tsuruta and Tenryu’s contracts to an organization out of Tokyo, the Yamazaki Corporation, and we’ll have a representative from that group here next week. The former World Tag champs give Tsuruta and Tenryu all they can handle, but in the end, Tenryu drives Dynamite into the mat with a powerbomb, then pins him to give the Japanese duo the win.
Page says that with a win over the former champions, Tsuruta and Tenryu are well on their way to earning a shot at the Tag titles.
AWA AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIP:
SGT. SLAUGHTER (Champ) (w/ Terry Taylor) VS. “COWBOY” BOB ORTON JR (w/ Jimmy Hart). Taylor comes out to the ring to watch Slaughter’s back after what took place between Slaughter and Paul Orndorff on last week’s show. This match is an exciting, hard-hitting affair, and Slaughter gets the win when he locks Orton in the Cobra Clutch right in the middle of the ring. Jimmy Hart tries to help Orton, but Terry Taylor pulls him off the apron and drops Hart with a right hand!
Trongard and Page wrap things up, and Trongard hypes next week’s show.
