Power Pro Wrestling presents:
‘The Power Hour’
Saturday 09/9/1988
WMC-5 Channel 5 Studios (Memphis, TN)
VTR: WELCOME TO THE POWER HOUR
Lance Russell, Dave Brown and Gordon Solie join us from ringside here for ‘The Power Hour’. Last week, Austin Idol caused quite a stir when he challenged Dick Slater to face him tonight on ‘The Power Hour’ after weeks of being sneak-attacked. That bout will take place within this hour! Lance Russell chuckles that ‘Superstar’ Bill Dundee may have bit off more than he can chew because he challenged ‘The World’s Strongest Man’ Doug Furnas to face him right here on ‘The Power Hour’ as well.
Gordon Solie takes a moment to talk about Bam Bam Bigelow, the so-called ‘Beast from the East’ who will be wrestling in our first match against All-Japan Pro Wrestling’s Johnny Ace. Solie will also be interviewing Freebird Terry Gordy a bit later on in the Personality Profile segment as well. Plus, ‘Bullet’ Bob Armstrong will be in action against ‘Hollywood’ John Tatum. Lance Russell mentions that Dutch Mantell is here as well and he’s got a few things he’d like to talk about regarding his on-going war with the Stud Stable.
At this point, PPW owner Jerry Jarrett makes his way onto the set and shakes hands with Lance Russell, Dave Brown and Gordon Solie. Jerry mentions how pleased he is to have the three best professional wrestling announcers in history all working here in Power Pro Wrestling. Jerry then mentions that we’ll soon be celebrating Lance Russell’s 30th year broadcasting Memphis Wrestling! Now, Lance isn’t aware of this but Jerry, Eddie Marlin and Dave Brown have spend the last several months planning a series of tributes to Lance’s incredible legacy.
“You’re kidding me,” a surprised Lance Russell musters as the fans cheer him. Jerry Jarrett announces that we’ll have a very special card celebrating Lance’s career coming up in December for Christmas, but until then, he’s invited several of the biggest stars from Memphis Wrestling history to share their favourite Lance Russell moments each week here on ‘The Power Hour’. First up is a very special message the original Fabulous One, Jackie Fargo!

JACKIE FARGO: “Well hello to all my friends in Memphis! And hello to one very special friend, my ol’ buddy Lance Russell. Boy Lance, we sure have been through a lot over the years, haven’t we? You know, as bloody as the brawls got, as much the injuries hurt, I never lost sight of what it an honor it was to have an announcer the caliber of Lance Russell calling mah matches! When they asked me to pick out one of mah favourite moments with Lance Russell, I knew just the one! This match took place a few years back. Lance sure did get a few chuckles seeing yours truly in the ring against that little runt Jimmy Hart! Enjoy this, and here’s to 30 more years of Memphis Wrestling with Lance Russell.

LANCE RUSSELL: “Oh boy, I sure do remember that one! Any time Jimmy Hart got his comeuppance sure was fun for me! Thank you very much, Jackie, and I’d like to thank everyone here at PPW. I’m truly touched. All right Davey, what do you say we go up to the ring for our first match?”
MATCH #1: BAM BAM BIGELOW VS. JOHNNY ACE
There are immediate jeers in the studio as Bam Bam Bigelow makes his first appearance in the area in quite some time. Johnny Ace doesn’t even have his ring jacket off when Bigelow attacks him. Bigelow delivers fights of fire as he pummels Ace in the corner. As Ace slumps down, Bigelow drills him with kick after kick to the stomach. ‘The Beast from the East’ scoops Johnny Ace, presses him above his head and sends him sailing down to the canvas. Bigelow then steps out to the apron, shouts some abuse at fans around ringside. The agile Bigelow then propels himself over the top rope and down onto Ace with a slingshot splash. Bam Bam hooks the leg and he gets the one… two… three! There’s no doubt that Bigelow is brutal as ever!
WINNER: BAM BAM BIGELOW (4:01)

LANCE RUSSELL: “Ooooooooookay, fans. As I mentioned earlier, Dutch Mantell has had a lot of things on his mind lately in regard to his problems with the Stud Stable. The Dutchman joins me now, Good to see you, Dutch.”
DUTCH MANTELL: “It’s a pleasure, Lance. And of course, I want to extend my congratulations! I can’t wait to get my chance to share my favourite memory of you and I, Lance. But unfortunately right now, there are some things going on here in PPW that I ain’t too pleased about.”
LANCE RUSSELL: “I imagine you’re referring to the Stud Stable once again stealing those Southern Tag Team Titles from Tracy Smothers and Steve Armstrong?”
DUTCH MANTELL: “Well, yes and no. There’s no doubt that Robert Fuller and Jimmy Golden committed highway robbery when they stole those tag team belts. But Lance, it’s a symptom of a larger problem. Myself, Bob Armstrong, the Southern Boys and the Dirty White Boy have been fighting with Fuller’s gang mores, and quite frankly we ain’t got much to show for it! So, I’ve been thinking, Lance. I’ve been thinking long and hard.”
LANCE RUSSELL: “So I’ve heard.”
DUTCH MANTELL: “I’ve thought long and hard, what I think we need is a match where everyone is in the ring at the same time, that way there’s no back-jumping.”
LANCE RUSSELL: “Like a cage match.”
DUTCH MANTELL: “Well, maybe. I’m not quite sure yet. The problem is that the cage can be climbed, and someone from the outside can climb in. And trust me, Lance, Robert Fuller wouldn’t think twice about hiring some goon to climb into the cage. What I think we need is a match where it’s guaranteed that no one can get in and no one can get out until the final bell rings. So what I’d like is for the people out there to send in some ideas! Send your ideas here to Channel 5, and maybe just maybe Jerry Jarrett will give them some thought! Whatever happens Lance, I think we need to put this war to bed. And there’s no way myself, the Armstrongs and the White Boy will ever do that until we get our hands raised over the whole Stud Stable!”
LANCE RUSSELL: “A very interesting idea, Dutchman! You heard the man folks, send us your ideas. I’m sure Jerry Jarrett and Eddie Marlin will be very interested. Right now though, back over to you Davey for the ring announcements!”

MATCH #2: ‘BULLET’ BOB ARMSTRONG VS. ‘HOLLYWOOD’ JOHN TATUM
‘Bad to the Bone’ plays in the studio as ‘Bullet’ Bob Armstrong makes his way around ringside to shake hands with the fans. Hollywood John Tatum primps before the match, but he’s all business when the opening bell rings. Armstrong flusters Tatum early, but Hollywood John uses a very questionable forearm to the lower stomach to take control. A swinging neck-breaker scores a near fall for Tatum, followed up by another close call for Bob Armstrong after a gordbuster. However, Bob Armstrong reverses a whip off the rope and drills Tatum with a clothesline, then a big backdrop. Armstrong finishes off Tatum with the Georgia Jawjacker and scores the pin-fall victory.
WINNER: BOB ARMSTRONG (8:01)

LANCE RUSSELL: “Heck of a win for the Bullet! Coming up next, Bill Dundee will face off with ‘The World’s Strongest Man’ Doug Furnas. I think Billy is gonna regret signing on the dotted line for this one!”

‘The Power Hour’ returns with Doug Furnas stepping into the ring as the fans give him a big ovation. Out next is Bill Dundee, who hesitates as he goes to roll into the ring. Dundee goes around the ring instead to jawjack with several of the fans in the front.
LANCE RUSSELL: “Aw, come on Billy! You’re the one who wanted this match after all. Get in the ring Billy!”
GORDON SOLIE: “Bill Dundee has been called a master manipulator in the past, and I do believe he’s playing a game of mental chess with one Doug Furnas at this time.”
DAVE BROWN: “That’s certainly possible, Gordon! Of course, he may also just be regretting signing on for this match in the cold light of day.”
LANCE RUSSELL: “I think that may be it, Davey. Okay enough Billy, get in the ring and stop wasting our time!”
TV MATCH #3: BILL ‘SUPERSTAR’ DUNDEE VS. ‘THE WORLD’S STRONGEST MAN’ DOUG FURNAS
Furnas and Dundee are finally face-to-face here, after several minutes of the Superstar stalling. Bill Dundee and Doug Furnas take the match to the mat after the bell rings and they trade holds moves in the first several minutes. After a few shots to the gut, Dundee tries to put Furnas away with a suplex but Furnas shoves him off early and catches The Superstar with a big time clothesline. The crowd is going wild as Furnas makes the cover, but Dundee is able to kick out at the last second.
Furnas gets to his feet and connects with a scoop slam and stomps on The Superstar. While trying to pull the champion up, Dundee somehow manages to nail Furnas with a forearm to the stomach. Bill Dundee rolls Furnas into a small package for the pin, but Furnas kicks out just before three! Bill Dundee is furious with referee Jerry Calhoun – claiming that it was a three count. Dundee rallies with a shot across the bow and then pulls Doug Furnas up into position and plants him with a neck-breaker!
Bill Dundee makes the cover once again the Furnas is able to get his shoulder up at the very last second! An exasperated Dundee tries to pull Furnas up, but Furnas pulls the Superstar into a stalling suplex and now both men are down. Both men are slow to get back to their feet and now they are trading rights and lefts. Furnas lunges at Dundee, but Bill Dundee dodges and pulls Furnas in. However, Furnas puts the breaks on, shoves the Superstar off and drills Dundee with a right hand that sends him down on his behind!
Hold on, Lance says he knew it wouldn’t stay one-on-one the whole match! Mr. Olympia is out now and he has climbed onto the apron. He is shouting abuse at Doug Furnas, who charges over now and collars Mr. Olympia. Here comes Jimmy Golden to pull Mr. Olympia down and they are both shouting at Furnas now! From behind, Dutch Mantell and Bob Armstrong arrive withrights and lefts to both Mr. Olympia and Golden! Down go Mr. Olympia and Jimmy Golden on the floor! However, both Mr. Olympia and Golden are up soon enough and brawling with Mantell and Armstrong. Jerry Calhoun is motioning for the back now – and out comes Eddie Marlin with prelim wrestlers, officials and referees.
They are able to get things broken up – and now Eddie Marlin throwing the Stud Stable, Armstrong and Mantell out of the studio! He is ordering Doug Furnas to resume the match, so the Furnas does just that! However, Bill Dundee has had ample time to rest as he drives a knee across the Furnas’s back. Furnas is slowing down as he gets to his feet and as the Superstar approaches, Furnas nails him with a few more right hands that send Dundee reeling. The Furnas somehow musters the strength to gorilla press Dundee and he bounces off the ropes for a flying shoulder block… but Bill Dundee pulls referee Jerry Calhoun in the way!
Doug Furnas is panicked as he tries to help Jerry Calhoun back to his feet. Look at Bill Dundee, he’s motioning from the dressing room. Bursting through the curtain is none other than…
‘THE MISSOURI TIGER’ JEFF GAYLORD!
We haven’t seen Jeff Gaylord in quite a few weeks, but he rolls into the ring and drills Doug Furnas from behind. Gaylord connects with a big boot to the forehead. Furnas is staggered, allowing Gaylord to pull him in and plane him with a jumping pile-driver! That move is illegal, but Jerry Calhoun is still trying to shake the cobwebs. Eddie Marlin must still be occupied with the Stud Stable, Dutch Mantell and Bob Armstrong or he’d be out here doing something about this! Gaylord rolls out to the floor as Dundee pulls Jerry Calhoun over. An impaired Jerry Calhoun starts making the count, but he doesn’t see Jeff Gaylord holding down Doug Furnas’s ankles from the floor. Calhoun counts the one… two… three! By hook or by crook, Bill Dundee just handed Doug Furnas his first-ever loss here in Power Pro Wrestling!
WINNER: BILL ‘SUPERSTAR’ DUNDEE (12:17)

-
Lance Russell is incredulous as a jubilant Bill Dundee and ‘The Missouri Tiger’ Jeff Gaylord make their way over to the desk.
LANCE RUSSELL: “I hope you’re real proud of yourself, Billy!”
BILL DUNDEE: “Of course, I am! I told ye, Lancer, that I’d beat that shaved ape Doug Furnas right here in the middle of the ring just like I beat everyone that has come through Mempho!”
LANCE RUSSELL: “Gimme a break, Billy! And you, Gaylord, don’t you ever get tired to being a crook for hire?”
JEFF GAYLORD: “Where the money goes, I go!”
BILL DUNDEE: “First of all, all Jeffrey did was stop Doug Furnas from cheating! There ain’t… DUUFFFF!”
A furious Doug Furnas has just double-clotheslined both Jeff Gaylord and Bill Dundee. The Superstar darts out of the studio as Jeff Gaylord and Doug Furnas brawl all over the studio. Finally, Eddie Marlin is back out with several wrestlers to break them up when we go to commercial.
LANCE RUSSELL: “We’ll be right back with Gordon’s Personality Profile and our main event as Austin Idol battles Bill Dundee!”

PERSONALITY PROFILE
-WITH-
GORDON SOLIE
GORDON SOLIE: “For this week’s edition of the Personality Profile, I have invited a man we saw make a surprise appearance here on ‘The Power Hour’ last week. Freebird Terry Gordy, you made quite an impression so why have you back to the area?”
TERRY GORDY: “Gordon Solie, you’ve known me a long time, man! You’ve watched me grow up. I don’t think nobody will question that I’m all grown up now! To answer yer question, I’ve always been about getting to the top of the mountain. I want to be the NWA World Heavyweight Champion! To do that, PPW is the place to be.”
GORDON SOLIE: “Last week, we saw you confronting the PPW Heavyweight Champion, ‘The Russian Nightmare’ Nikita Koloff.”
TERRY GORDY: “You know, I been all over the world. I’ve seen a lot of low-down things. By I couldn’t believe my ears last week when I heard these people here in the South cheering a no-good Russian!”
GORDON SOLIE: “I should add that Mr. Koloff has renounced any allegiance to the Soviet Union. He has made it quite clear that he is fighting for himself, and only himself, here in Power Pro Wrestling!”
TERRY GORDY: “Trust me Gordon, a filthy, lying Russian ain’t never anything but a filthy, lying Russian! I don’t got no respect…”
There’s a commotion on the set now… as Bam Bam Bigelow comes through the curtain! Bigelow and Gordy immediately square up to each other as Bam Bam makes his way over to the desk.
GORDON SOLIE: “Mr. Bigelow, I believe we spoke earlier about having you on the Personality Profile right here next week. This is Mr. Gordy’s time.”
BAM BAM BIGELOW: “First of all, I go where I want, when I want! Nobody tells me when I can come out here and when I can’t! I got something to say to YOU, Terry Gordy and I’m gonna say it!”
TERRY GORDY: “Is that right? What do you got to say, cueball?”
The anger flares in Bam Bam Bigelow’s eyes, as Gordon Solie holds up his hand and signals that he doesn’t want any violence out here.
BAM BAM BIGELOW: “Gordy, I don’t like you! But you know who I hate even more than you? That stinkin’ Russian piece of garbage, Nikita Koloff! Like you said, there’s nothing worse that a stinkin’ Russian walking into this country and thinkin’ they can compete with Americans like you and me!”
TERRY GORDY: “Well, I’ll be! I didn’t figure you for being that smart, but you’ve got some sense, boy!”
BAM BAM BIGELOW: “I’ve had about enough. But you know what? I do want to fight you. You want to fight me. And we’re gonna fight. But I think we have something in a common to take care of first!”
TERRY GORDY: “Is that right?”
BAM BAM BIGELOW: “That stinkin’ Russian has the PPW Title, which both of us want! If we get Koloff out of the way, then you and me can beat the hell out of each! But at least the belt won’t be on a Commie! Yeah, I hear you people chanting for Koloff! Shut up!”
TERRY GORDY: “I don’t need no friends, man.”
BAM BAM BIGELOW: “I don’t want to be your friend! We got a common problem. All I’m sayin’ is we stay on the same page right now, we can get rid of Koloff and then settle things between ourselves! Think about it, nobody can stop the Freebird and the Beast from the East. We can take care of Koloff in no time.”
TERRY GORDY: “As much as I hate to admit it, you got a point. You wanna shake my hand? Fine, man. Like you said, we ain’t friends… but we got the same roadblock in our way. Let’s get rid of Koloff.”
BAM BAM BIGELOW: “You hear that, Koloff? Not only do you the Freebird coming after you, you got the Beast from the East too!”
Bam Bam Bigelow and Terry Gordy have a tense handshake and then walk off as the camera zooms in on Gordon Solie sitting alone at the desk.
GORDON SOLIE: “Broth-er. Bam Bam Bigelow is a one-man wrecking machine on his own, and so is Freebird Terry Gordy. I can’t even imagine the devastation these men could cause… together! Fans, we’ll be right back.”

TV MAIN EVENT: DICK SLATER VS. ‘UNIVERSAL HEARTTHROB’ AUSTIN IDOL
Dick Slater is ambushed on his way to the ring by Austin Idol, who rings Slater’s bell with some big right hands. Idol grabs Slater by the hair and hurls him into the ring, and then dives into the ring himself. Slater and Austin are in the ring, this hotly anticipated contest can get underway.
Austin keeps control early on and he manages to hit a running lariat that almost puts Dick Slater away just past the three minute mark. But, Dick Slater manages to duck a clothesline and he turns around to drill Idol with a knee lift. Dick Slater grabs Austin Idol by the neck and slams him head first into the turnbuckle a few times and then connects with a brutal elbow smash to the forehead.
The force behind the strike causes Austin Idol to slide backwards and crash into the canvas, and Slater is right on top of him with a second big elbow smash. Dick Slater then climbs up to the second rope and goes for a knee drop, but Austin Idol rolls out of the way at the last second. Austin pulls himself up and then kicks Slater on the back of the head a few times. Idol now perches himself on the second rope and waits. Slater slowly gets back to his feet and when he turns around, Austin Idol leaps off the top and connects with a double sledge across the forehead!
Austin Idol stays on top for the cover and hooks the leg, but somehow Slater is able to kick out just before the three count. Once Slater staggers up, Austin approaches from behind and locks in the sleeper hold! However, Dick Slater charges forward towards the turnbuckle, and he manages to duck down just in time and Austin Idol smashes his head into the top turnbuckle.
Idol wobbles backwards and he is trying to shake off the effects of that blow to the head, but Slater quickly shoots him off the ropes. Idol ducks a swinging clothesline, scoops Slater up and slams him! Look at this, Idol has the leg and he’s signaling the fans. Idol twists the knee and he’s applying the Las Vegas Leglock! Just as Idol goes to cinch in the Las Vegas Leglock, the slights in the studio go out!
Lance, Dave and Gordon Solie aren’t sure what to make of it, but we can hear a commotion in the ring. The lights out for a good 30 seconds, and then they come back on, Austin Idol is laying motionless in the center of the ring. Referee Tommy Gilbert isn’t quite sure what happened because it was pitch black in the studio.
Dick Slater rolls over on top of Idol and hooks the leg. Tommy Gilbert doesn’t have much choice other than to make the count for the one… two… three! Confusion reigns as Dave Brown rings the bell. Dick Slater has seemingly won this match under very suspicious circumstances.
WINNER: DICK SLATER (9:00)

-
The commotion turns to some jeers - and admittedly some cheers - when Southern Heavyweight Champion Tommy Rich makes his way out to the studio, looking very concerned.
LANCE RUSSELL: “Now hold on just a second. Tommy, none of us even knew you were here today!”
TOMMY RICH: “I just got here and somebody said somethin’ about the lights going out!”
LANCE RUSSELL: “I hate to say it, Tommy, but this doesn’t look good. Not at all!”
TOMMY RICH: “I don’t know what you’re talkin’ about Russell! I’m just out here to check on my good friend Austin! That’s what I’m gonna do!”
Tommy Rich makes his way to the ring where he helps Tommy Gilbert in getting Idol to his knees. When Idol realizes that Tommy Rich is helping him, Idol shoves Rich away! Idol is accusing Rich of attacking him!
LANCE RUSSELL: “I think he’s got a point, Davey!”
DAVE BROWN: “I’m not sure what happened but it certainly doesn’t look good for Tommy Rich!”
LANCE RUSSELL: “We’ll have to get to the bottom of this next week! Fans, we’re all out of time. Join us next week because Eddie Marlin has signed a big main event: Doug Furnas and Dutch Mantell against Bill Dundee and Jeff Gaylord! Have a good week everybody!”
