ROSEMONT HORIZON IN CHICAGO, IL
JOHNNY SMITH & OWEN HART battle FUJI YAMADA & TIGER MASK II to a 15-minute time limit DRAW. These two teams put on a clinic here, particularly the two Jr. heavyweights Hart and Yamada. One of the highlights of the match was Owen hitting a missile dropkick from the top rope onto Tiger Mask, then in one motion as he lands on the mat, he kips up onto his feet! In the end, neither team could put the other away before the time limit expired.
BOB BACKLUND beats JACK FOLEY by submission with the crossface chickenwing. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Foley in action in the AWA, and he’s wrestling with a more aggressive style here than we had seen from him in the past. Despite giving Backlund a tough match, Foley eventually falls in defeat to the former World champion.
MIKE ROTUNDA defeats BLACK BART by pinfall after an Airplane Spin.
JUMBO TSURUTA (w/ Mr. Fuji) beats CURTIS “THE BIG CAT” HUGHES. We get a battle of the big men here, as the Big Cat makes his AWA debut against the former AWA champ Tsuruta. Hughes holds his own for most of the match, even shocking the fans in attendance by hitting a standing dropkick, but in the end, Tsuruta hits a swinging neckbreaker for the pinfall victory.
AWA World TV champion BOB ORTON JR (w/ Jimmy Hart) battles TERRY TAYLOR to a 20-minute time limit DRAW. Taylor had been asking for this match, and finally gets it here. He takes the champ to the limit, but in the end, the match is declared a draw. Taylor takes the house mic and challenges Orton to 5 more minutes, with the fans being very vocal in their agreement, but Orton refuses, and he and Hart leave the ring.
THE PLAYBOYS: TOM PRITCHARD & JIMMY DEL RAY (w/ Diamond Dallas Page) defeat THE CAN-AM EXPRESS: TOM ZENK & PHIL LAFLEUR. Prior to the start of the match, Page gets on the house mic, and says that Pritchard and Del Ray are getting sick and tired of these Midwestern “women”, and he uses the term loosely, trying to grope them every time they come down the aisle! He says that if it doesn’t stop, they will be taking legal action! Zenk and Lafleur just shake their heads during Page’s rant, then attack the Playboys as soon as the bell rings!
The Playboys are no slouches, they give as good as they get here, and the fans are treated to an exciting, fast-paced match. As we near the 20-minute mark, the Can-Am Express have the match well in hand, but when Zenk heads to the top rope, Page shoves him off, and Zenk crashes to the mat. Pritchard had the referee distracted, and he turned around to see Del Ray covering Zenk. The referee counts to three, and the Playboys have stole a victory here from the Can-Am Express!
AWA Tag Team champions THE BRITISH BULLDOGS: DAVEY BOY SMITH & DYNAMITE KID defeat BRET HART & JIM NEIDHART (w/ Jimmy Hart). The Chicago fans are treated to another exciting tag team match here, as the two top teams in wrestling square off for the World tag titles! In the end, Dynamite pins Neidhart after hitting the falling headbutt from the top rope, while Davey Boy brawls with Bret outside the ring.
STAN HANSEN & “MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeat STEVE “DR. DEATH” WILLIAMS & SGT. SLAUGHTER. The two main feuds in the AWA combine for this action-packed tag team match! The fans are treated to a real barn-burner, and in the end, Hansen delivers a vicious Lariat to the World champion and pins Doc for the victory!
