AWA “PRO WRESTLING USA”
Airdate: Friday, September 1, 1988
Broadcast nationwide on Superstation WGN
Taped August 30, 1988 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Arena in Lincoln, NE
“From coast to coast, border to border, and continent to continent, this is the AWA, the major leagues of professional wrestling!”
Rod Trongard opens the show, and welcomes his co-host Diamond Dallas Page!
Trongard tells us that this week, Americas champ Paul Orndorff and World Television champ Bob Orton Jr will be in tag team action. The returning Terry Taylor will be here. Six of the top young prospects in wrestling will square off in a 6-man tag match, and Sgt. Slaughter takes on Black Bart in the feature match.
Page says we’ll hear from Stan Hansen, who was screwed out of the World title by a crooked rep from the State Athletic Commission last Saturday night in St. Paul.
TERRY TAYLOR VS. MIKE VACHON. Taylor gets the win, hitting Vachon with the flying forearm smash off the ropes.
After the bout, Taylor joins Trongard and Page at the announce desk. Taylor is happy to be back in the AWA, Trongard says that the last time he was in the Midwest, he held the AWA TV title, which is now held by Bob Orton Jr.
VTR of Orton beating Wahoo McDaniel for the World TV title on 8/18.
Taylor says he held the title back at the end of 1987. He says that it’s a prestigious title, it was an honour to hold it, and he’s looking to regain the belt!
Before we go to the next match, Trongard talks about a special event coming up, Super Sunday ‘88! He says that the event will take place at the St. Paul Civic Center on Sunday night, October 8, and will be shown via closed circuit at venues all around the Midwest! He says that information will be made available in the coming weeks, regarding the matches that will take place, and what venues will be showing the event!
Trongard then says that one match has already been signed, and this is a BIG one, possibly the most important match in the history of the sport . . . AWA World heavyweight champion “Dr. Death” Steve Williams will face Pacific Wrestling Federation and United National champion Stan Hansen . . . AND ALL THREE TITLES WILL BE ON THE LINE!!!
Due to the way the previous matches between the two have ended, this time the match won’t be stopped for blood, and there won’t be any DQ’s or count-outs! There must be a winner, and that winner will walk away as the first ever TRIPLE CROWN CHAMPION!
MIKE ROTUNDA (w/ Bob Backlund) VS. RON SEXTON. Rotunda continues his winning ways here, pinning Sexton after the Airplane Spin. On commentary, Trongard mentions that Rotunda is looking for another match with Toshiaki Kawada of the Holy Demon Army, as the last time they met, after Rotunda won the match, Kawada sucker-punched him, then knocked Rotunda senseless with a vicious kick to the head!
Magnum TA is standing by with Mr. Fuji and his Holy Demon Army: Jumbo Tsuruta, Genichiro Tenryu and Toshiaki Kawada. Magnum says that Fuji’s men have been impressive since arriving in the Midwest. Fuji says that’s due to his training and leadership. He says they are no longer a team, they fight as one, completely focused on doing his bidding! Fuji says that his goal is not only championship gold, but complete domination! They won’t stop until everyone in the AWA trembles at his feet, begging for mercy!
“COWBOY” BOB ORTON JR & “MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Jimmy Hart) VS. JAKE MILLIMAN & DAVID SAMMARTINO. The popular Milkman and the son of the Living Legend take the fight right to Orndorff and Orton, but in the end, Hart’s team gets the win after Orndorff drops Milliman on his head with the Piledriver for the 1, 2, 3!
After the match, Hart, Orton and Orndorff join Trongard and Page at the announce desk. Page shakes Hart’s hand, and congratulates him on controlling the Americas and TV titles! Hart says that it’s only a matter of time before Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart take the World Tag titles, and then all that’s left is the World heavyweight title!
Bob Orton addresses the comments made earlier by Terry Taylor, and says that Taylor is a punk and not even in his league! He says that if Taylor wants to be humiliated, he knows where to find Orton.
Trongard talks about the issues between Orndorff and Sgt. Slaughter.
VTR of Slaughter taunting Orndorff during a match two weeks ago on TV, nearly costing Orndorff the match.
Orndorff says Slaughter is just jealous of him, because Orndorff is the total package, the best looking and most talented man in wrestling, and Slaughter wishes he could be more like “Mr. Wonderful”! Orndorff then says that he’s tired of wrestling Slaughter, by now it should be obvious to everyone, even these dense Midwestern fans, that Slaughter can’t beat him, and now it’s starting to get embarrassing. He says that he will not be giving Slaughter any more shots at the Americas title.
This brings out AWA President Nick Bockwinkel!
Bockwinkel tells Orndorff that’s not his decision to make, and that the Championship Committee disagrees with Orndorff. Bock says that, since Orndorff has yet to cleanly beat Slaughter, he feels that the Sarge does indeed deserve another shot at the title, and will make sure that the match gets signed.
This does not sit well with Orndorff, who gets in Bockwinkel’s face, telling him that he can’t push Mr. Wonderful around.
Jimmy Hart calms Orndorff down, and with a sly smile, says that he will make sure Slaughter never receives another title match!
JUMBO TSURUTA (w/ Mr. Fuji) VS. THE GREAT WOJO. Tsuruta gets the win, hitting a swinging neckbreaker for the pinfall. After the match, Tsuruta drops Wojo with a second swinging neckbreaker, just for kicks. As Fuji and Tsuruta leave the ring, Wojo has to be helped to the back.
Magnum TA is standing by with Stan Hansen.
VTR of Hansen’s match with Steve Williams last Saturday night in St. Paul. The match is stopped as a representative from the Minnesota State Athletic Commission deems that the two men are bleeding too badly to continue.
Hansen is livid about the match being stopped, saying that he had Williams beat, but that pencil pusher from the State Athletic Commission cost him the World title!
Magnum says that we heard the announcement from Rod Trongard earlier, that at “Super Sunday” on October 8, Hansen will meet Williams again, and this time the match can’t be stopped, there must be a winner.
Hansen says that this is exactly what he wants, a match where Williams can’t use a technicality to hold onto his title! Hansen says that on October 8, that World title will be his!
OWEN HART & DAVE FINLAY & JOHNNY SMITH VS. WILD PEGASUS & FUJI YAMADA & TIGER MASK II. On commentary, Trongard says that fans that have attended the live shows recently have been treated to matches between these six men, who are considered some of the top young prospects in the sport, but now the national TV audience gets to see them as well!
After an exciting, fast-paced match with plenty of high flying, Owen Hart gets the win for his team, pinning Yamada with a Northern Lights Suplex with a bridge into a pin.
SGT. SLAUGHTER VS. BLACK BART. The real American hero comes to the ring to a loud ovation, waving a small American flag. Once the bell sounds, Slaughter is all business, and after wearing Bart down, he delivers a crushing Slaughter Cannon, then locks on the Cobra Clutch for the submission.
Trongard and Page wrap things up, and hype next week’s show.
