‘The Power Hour’
Saturday 08/12/1988
Civic Center (Pensacola, Florida)
VTR: WELCOME TO THE POWER HOUR
Lance Russell, Dave Brown and Gordon Solie join us from ringside here for ‘The Power Hour’, where we have a huge show. Right here tonight, we’ll have a preview of sorts of next week’s Southern Heavyweight Title match when champion Tommy Rich and his challenger Austin Idol join forces to battle the Moondogs. We’ll also have a Southern Tag Team Title match as Bill Dundee and ‘The King’ Roy Lee Welch defend against The Wild-Eyed Southern Boys. Plus, Gordon Solie will have a special in-ring interview with PPW Heavyweight Champion Curt Hennig. Solie also makes brief mention of that odd note he received last week promising that the “Nightmare Begins” tonight.
TV Match #1: Shane Douglas vs. Mike Jackson
Jackson is the reigning Alabama Jr. Heavyweight Champion, but his title is not on the line since The Power Hour is not emanating from Alabama tonight. As the bell rings, Lance Russell and Dave Brown are joined on commentary by Southern Jr. Heavyweight Champion Nelson Royal, who is still miffed about being challenged by Shane Douglas last week. Royal critiques nearly every move that Douglas makes despite the fact that Shane controls the pacing for a good portion of the contest. The finish sees Mike Jackson go for a Thesz Press, only for Shane to catch him in mid-air and drive him into the canvas with a belly-to-belly suplex for the three count. Nelson Royal makes it clear that Douglas would never be able to pull off such a maneuver against him because he’s simply the best jr. heavyweight wrestler of all-time.
Winner: Shane Douglas
‘The Universal Heartthrob’ Austin Idol joins Gordon Solie after the match to talk about teaming with Tommy Rich tonight against the Moondogs, one week ahead of their title bout. Idol makes it clear that he thinks something fishy is going on involving Dick Slater, but he can’t quite put his finger on it yet. To Tommy Rich’s credit, he agreed to a rematch for the Southern Title and that’s the only reason he agreed to team with Tommy tonight. However, Idol wants to warn Rich that any funny business will bring out a fire in the Universal Heartthrob the likes of which Wildfire can’t even imagine, Jackson!
---COMMERCIAL BREAK---
In his Personality Profile segment, Gordon Solie welcomes PPW Heavyweight Champion Curt Hennig to the ring to the usual jeers from the crowd. Hennig tells Gordon Solie to shut “these hicks” up or he’s not going to answer any questions, which only riles up the Pensacola fans up. The champion complains to Gordon Solie that the fans here in the south should feel lucky to have a great champion like Curt Hennig coming to their little podunk towns, so he demands some respect! The fans continue to boo, until there’s been a huge commotion in the crowd.
Making his way down the aisle is none other than ‘The Russian Nightmare’ Nikita Koloff! Hennig and Solie are both surprised as Nikita steps into the ring and squares up to the PPW Heavyweight Champion. Koloff tells Solie that he’s here in Power Pro Wrestling to face the best and beat the best. “Not fight for Russia. Not fight for USA. Nikita fight for… Nikita,” Koloff tells Solie. Hennig gets cocky and tells Koloff that he won’t be upstaged by anyone and jabs his finger in Nikita’s chest. Koloff looks down at the finger, then shoves Hennig across the ring! The PPW Champion rolls out to the floor, and throws a fit on the floor as Koloff tells Solie that “The Nightmare has begun”.
TV Match #2: Southern Tag Team Title Match
Bill Dundee and ‘The King’ Roy Lee Welch (w/ Jamie Dundee) vs. Wild-Eyed Southern Boys
The King orders referee Tommy Gilbert to bow down to him before the bell, but Gilbert refuses. Tracy Smothers and Steve Armstrong get a huge reaction as they hit the ring with double dropkicks on Welch and Dundee, knocking them out to the floor. Once the bell rings, Roy Lee Welch and Bill Dundee are both worked over by the Southern Boys, but Dundee eventually hits a curiously low blow on Steve Armstrong. Dundee stomps on Armstrong, then shoots him off the ropes and connects with a jumping clothesline. Roy Lee Welch tags in and slams Armstrong, then covers him for a two count. Roy Lee Welch applies the Figure Four, but Armstrong eventually reaches the ropes. Welch pulls Armstrong in for a pile-driver, but Steve back-drops him and makes the tag to Tracy Smothers. Smothers is in with right hands for Welch, and then Bill Dundee charges in as Jamie Dundee jumps on the apron. Smothers ducks a clothesline from Superstar Dundee, then hurls him straight into his own son Jamie. Smothers rolls Dundee and gets the three count! We have new champions! Robert Fuller is out complaining of a fast count as Tracy Smothers and Steve Armstrong celebrate with their new titles.
Winners: **New** Southern Tag Team Champions The Wild-Eyed Southern Boys
---COMMERCIAL BREAK---
Bob Armstrong, Dutch Mantell and Dirty White Boy celebrate with The Wild-Eyed Southern Boys as we come back from commercial. The Bullet tells Gordon Solie that we’ve just seen the trajectory for the Stud Stable - they’re going to get bringing the fight to Fuller and his goons until they’re run out of Power Pro for good! Dutch Mantell has his eye on Bull Pain next and challenges the big man to face him right here next week on The Power Hour.
TV Match #3:
‘The World’s Strongest Man’ Doug Furnas vs. Uganda
The massive Uganda attacks Furnas as he steps through the ropes. Furnas fires back with rights and lefts, shoots Uganda off the ropes and drills him with a flying shoulder-block. Furnas then waits for Uganda to stumble up, then connects with a big dropkick to send the big man into the corner. Furnas then scoops up Uganda and power-slams him right into the middle of the ring for the three count in under 2 minutes!
Winner: ‘The World’s Strongest Man’ Doug Furnas
VTR: ‘WILDCAT’ WENDELL COOLEY
---COMMERCIAL BREAK---
The Grappler joins Gordon Solie before the main event to introduce himself as the best masked wrestler in the history of the sport of professional wrestling. He is sick and tired of namby pamby punks like Doug Furnas, the Southern Boys and Austin Idol cashing big checks that he should be getting. The Grappler puts all of the fan favourites in Power Pro on notice that he’s not just going to beat them, he’s going to embarrass them.
TV Main Event:
Austin Idol and Tommy Rich vs. The Moondogs
The mood is frosty between Idol and Rich before the bell when Austin ignores his partner’s attempt at a high five. However, Idol and Rich are both top stars for a reason and they’re able to bring the fight to the Moondogs even though they’re barely getting along. The finish sees Idol being double-teamed by the Moondogs, while Tommy Rich reaches out for the tag. Dick Slater hops the railing, sneaks up and shoves Tommy Rich off the apron, sending Wildfire crashing down to the floor. Slater slinks away as Idol finally frees himself from the Moondogs and gets to his corner… to find nobody! A furious Idol manages to fight off both Moondogs and small package Moondog Rex for the pin moments later. After the bell, Tommy Rich rolls into the ring where he’s immediately met with accusations from Austin Idol. Rich tries to explain that he was shoved by Dick Slater, but Idol isn’t buying it and he walks off on his own.
Winners: Austin Idol and Tommy Rich
Gordon Solie, Lance Russell and Dave Brown recap all of tonight’s big events, then announce that we’ll have the Southern Champion Tommy RIch versus Austin Idol next week. Plus, Dutch Mantell will battle Bull Pain and ‘The Russian Nightmare’ Nikita Koloff will be in action.
