THE AMERICAN WRESTLING ASSOCIATION
SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 1988
CIVIC CENTER IN ST. PAUL, MN
FUJI YAMADA battles DAVE FINLAY to a DRAW at the 15-minute mark. Both men show why they are considered future superstars, as they go toe to toe for the entire 15 minute time limit.
MIKE ROTUNDA beats TOSHIAKI KAWADA (w/ Mr. Fuji) by pinfall. After a hard-hitting match, Rotunda gets the win by pinning Kawada following an Airplane Spin. After the match, Rotunda offers his hand to Kawada in a show of respect after a hard-fought match. Kawada hesitates, then shakes Rotunda’s hand . . . only to hit him with a sucker punch, followed by a vicious kick to the head that left Rotunda flat on his back on the mat!
TERRY TAYLOR defeats ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER. Taylor makes his return to the St. Paul Civic Center, as he takes on the madman from the Sudan, Abdullah the Butcher. Taylor wins this wild bout, connecting with the flying forearm smash off the ropes for the pinfall.
AWA World TV champion BOB ORTON JR (w/ Jimmy Hart) JIMMY “SUPERFLY” SNUKA by pinfall after hitting Snuka with the top-rope Superplex for the pinfall.
AWA World Tag Team champion DAVEY BOY SMITH beats JIM NEIDHART (w/ Jimmy Hart). In the first of two singles matches between members of the British Bulldogs and Hart’s team of Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart, Davey Boy Smith picks up the victory over Neidhart by pinning him with a Crucifix after ducking a clothesline attempt.
BRET HART (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeats AWA World Tag Team champion THE DYNAMITE KID by pinfall with a German suplex into a pin.
Before the start of the next match, Jimmy Hart got on the house mic, and told Sgt. Slaughter that Paul Orndorff was getting tired of kicking Slaughter around, and this would be Sarge’s last shot at the Americas title!
SGT. SLAUGHTER defeats AWA Americas champion “MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Jimmy Hart) by DQ. At around the 20-minute mark, Slaughter gained control of the match, and after connecting with the Slaughter Cannon, he locked Orndorff in the Cobra Clutch, right in the middle of the ring! It looked as though Slaughter was on his way to becoming the champion, but Bob Orton Jr hits the ring and attacks Slaughter, leading to the DQ! With Orndorff pretty much out of it, Orton brawls with Slaughter, with the Sarge getting the upper hand and hitting the Slaughter Cannon, causing Orton to fall through the ropes and to the floor. Moments later, Jimmy Hart leads his men from ringside.
No Count-outs:
AWA World heavyweight champion STEVE “DR. DEATH” WILLIAMS battles STAN HANSEN to a No Contest. After Williams beat Hansen by count-out the last time the AWA was at the Civic Center, this match had the added stipulation that there would be no count-outs. Late in the match, they make their way to the floor, where Hansen tries to ram Doc’s head into the ringpost, but Doc blocks it, sending Hansen into the post instead, and opening up a gash on Hansen’s head. Williams repeatedly punches Hansen, opening the cut up even more, and before long, Hansen’s face is a crimson mask. That doesn’t stop Hansen, though, he gets his hands on the bullrope that he carries to the ring, and uses the cowbell to open up a cut on Doc’s head as well!
Back inside the ring, both men are bleeding heavily at this piont, and moments later, the rep from the Minnesota State Athletic Commission comes to the side of the ring, and speaks with the timekeeper. The bell rings, and the timekeeper informs the ref and ring announcer Larry Nelson that the rep from the State Athletic Commission has stopped the fight due to the heavy blood loss of both men. Nelson announces that the match has been declared a No Contest.
