AWA “PRO WRESTLING USA”
Airdate: Friday, August 25, 1988
Broadcast nationwide on Superstation WGN
Taped August 16, 1988 at the Brown County Arena in Green Bay, WI
“From coast to coast, border to border, and continent to continent, this is the AWA, the major leagues of professional wrestling!”
Rod Trongard opens the show, and welcomes his co-host Diamond Dallas Page!
Trongard hypes tonight’s main event, a match that could main event any arena in the country, and we’ll see it right here on television this hour, as Sgt. Slaughter and AWA champion Steve Williams take on Americas champion Paul Orndorff and Stan Hansen!
Trongard and Page are joined by AWA Americas champ “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff, his manager Jimmy Hart and Stan Hansen. The Green Bay crowd starts up with a “Paula” chant directed at Orndorff, after Slaughter got them chanting it last week. Orndorff screams at the fans, then covers his ears, while Hart tries to console him. Stan Hansen seems somewhat amused by all this, as he chews a large chunk of tobacco, spitting a gob of it right on the floor! Trongard looks like he’s going to be sick!
Hansen says he and Orndorff are going to kick the stuffing out of Williams and Slaughter, and after he humiliates Williams in the tag match, he wants another match with Williams so he can take Doc’s World title!
Orndorff says he is going to get his hands on that fraud, Slaughter, and show him what a real man can do!
The fans start up with the “Paula” chants again, to which Orndorff threatens to come out into the crowd, and knock out each and every person chanting that!
THE BRITISH BULLDOGS: DAVEY BOY SMITH & DYNAMITE KID VS. JOEL & DAVID DEATON. The World Tag champs put the Deaton brothers away when Dynamite hits a diving headbutt off of Davey’s shoulders, on Joel for the pinfall.
Magnum TA is standing by with AWA World champion Steve Williams and Sgt. Slaughter. Magnum says that they’ve got a tough match ahead of them when they face Hansen and Orndorff.
Willams says that Hansen and Paula Orndorff are double tough, but he and the Sarge are tougher! He says that it’s not going to be a wrestling match, it’s going to be a fight . . . and that’s just the way they like it!
Slaughter says he’s got plenty of experience with arrogant, disrespectful little pukes like Paula Orndorff from his time as a drill instructor. He says there’s only one way to teach them a lesson, and that’s by beating it into them! He says that’s exactly what he’s going to do to Paula Orndorff!
GENICHIRO TENRYU & TOSHIAKI KAWADA (w/ Mr. Fuji) VS. GINO BRITO JR & NICK DECARLO. Trongard says we’ve got an international match here, as DeCarlo and Brito are here from Canada to face the Japanese duo of Tenryu and Kawada. Fuji’s duo are in top form tonight, and they make short work of the Canadian duo, as Tenryu drops DeCarlo with a powerbomb for the pinfall.
Trongard and Page send us to the ring for the main event, with Trongard saying they’re giving the match plenty of time, but there are standby matches if need be.
STAN HANSEN & “MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Jimmy Hart) VS. “DR. DEATH” STEVE WILLIAMS & SGT. SLAUGHTER. Trongard and Page put this over as a match that could main event even the biggest arenas, but the AWA is giving the fans this match on television, for free!
A brawl errupts before the start of the match, and predictably, we see Hansen brawl with Williams, and Orndorff tangle with Slaughter. The referee tries to get one member of each team out of the ring, but with no luck! Slaughter and Orndorff trade punches in the ring, while Williams throws Hansen through the ropes and then follows him out to the floor. Outside, Hansen drives a knee into Williams’ stomach, then tries to ram his head into the ringpost, but Williams puts his foot on the post to block it, then slams Hansen’s head into the post! Hansen, dazed, stumbles around ringside, with Williams staying right on him.
Inside the ring, Orndorff gets the upper hand on Slaughter after raking the Sarge’s eyes. The advantage doesn’t last long, as Williams comes back into the ring and helps Slaughter. It’s two on one until Hansen climbs back into the ring to even the sides.
The referee is finally able to get order restored, by threatening to end the match and DQ both teams. From there, we get a regular tag team match, as Orndorff and Slaughter start out. Orndorff is in a bad way after being double-teamed by Slaughter and Williams, but when Sarge looks to hook on the Cobra Clutch, Hansen comes in and pummels Sarge! This brings Williams back in, but as the referee is trying to get him back to his corner, it gives Hansen and Orndorff a chance to double-team Slaughter.
The next several minutes see Hansen and Orndorff taking turns working over the Sarge, keeping Slaughter from tagging Williams. Every time Williams tries to come in and help, the referee removes him from the ring, allowing Hansen and Orndorff to double-team Slaughter.
The tables turn, though, when Orndorff looks to try and humiliate Slaughter by locking Sarge in Slaughter’s own hold, the Cobra Clutch! Slaughter breaks free before Orndorff can cinch it in, and Slaughter turns around, nearly taking Orndorff’s head off with a big clothesline! Sarge tags Williams in, and the World champion comes in like a house o’ fire, knocking Orndorff around the ring. Orndorff tags out to Hansen, and the big cowboy climbs into the ring, eyeing Williams. The crowd errupts as Williams and Hansen then tear into each, and don’t let up for several minutes.
As Trongard informs the fans watching at home that they’re nearing the end of the TV show, Williams gets knocked to the mat, but then explodes to his feet, hitting Hansen with a wicked clothesline that sends the big cowboy tumbling through the ropes! Things really get out of hand then, as Hansen grabs his bullrope before re-entering the ring!
Hansen clocks Williams with the cowbell, leading to the referee calling for a DQ. Hansen responds by hitting the referee with the cowbell as well, before tossing him through the ropes and to the floor!
Orndorff and Slaughter get involved at that point as well, and all four men brawl in the ring!
Trongard says that the official decision is a victory for Williams and Slaughter via disqualification, and then he and Page wrap things up as the four men continue to brawl in the ring!
