THE AMERICAN WRESTLING ASSOCIATION
SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 1988
CIVIC CENTER IN ST. PAUL, MN
JOHNNY SMITH & FUJI YAMADA beat DAVE FINLAY & PEGASUS KID. We get a real international mix in the opening bout, as England’s Johnny Smith teams with Fuji Yamada from Japan to take on Northern Ireland’s Dave Finlay and the Canadian Pegasus Kid! This fast paced, high flying affair lasts almost 20 minutes, but Yamada gets the win for his team, just moments before the time limit was to expire. Yamada went to the top rope and shocked and amazed the fans in attendance with a Shooting Star Press on Finlay for the 1, 2, 3!
OWEN HART battles TIGER MASK II to a DRAW at the 15-minute mark.
JIMMY DEL RAY (w/ Diamond Dallas Page) beats JACK FOLEY by pinfall.
AWA TV champion WAHOO MCDANIEL defeats TOM PRITCHARD (w/ Diamond Dallas Page). Pritchard gives the legendary Chief a fight, but in the end, Wahoo drops Pritchard with a vicious overhead tomahawk chop for the 1, 2, 3.
JIMMY “SUPERFLY” SNUKA beats THE GREAT KABUKI by pinfall after connecting with the Superfly splash.
AWA World Tag Team champions THE BRITISH BULLDOGS: DAVEY BOY SMITH & DYNAMITE KID battle BRET HART & JIM NEIDHART (w/ Jimmy Hart) to a DRAW at the 30-minute mark.
THE SUPERPOWERS: SGT. SLAUGHTER & NIKITA KOLOFF defeat “MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF & “COWBOY” BOB ORTON JR (w/ Jimmy Hart) when Slaughter pinned Orndorff after the Slaughter Cannon. The match was originally supposed to be a singles match between Slaughter and Orndorff, but after Orton’s actions on TV the previous day, Slaughter asked AWA President Nick Bockwinkel to turn it into a tag team match, so he could get his hands on both Orndorff AND Orton.
Prior to the start of the main event, Larry Nelson announces to the crowd that Hansen, on a recent tour of Japan, defeated Genichiro Tenryu for the Pacific Wrestling Federation World heavyweight title, and the NWA United National title! Because that title victory happened after this match was signed, only Williams' AWA title will be on the line.
AWA World heavyweight champion STEVE “DR. DEATH” WILLIAMS beats STAN HANSEN by Count-Out. These two go toe to toe for almost 40 minutes! After a back and forth match, Hansen gains the upper hand. Both men are dead tired as Hansen pummels Williams, but as Stan goes for the Lariat, Williams’ legs seemingly give out on him, and he falls to the mat. Hansen’s momentum carries him right through the ropes and to the floor. Hansen is down and out on the floor, and can’t answer the referee’s count. Steve Williams is awarded the match by count-out!
After the decision is announced, Hansen sneaks back into the ring, as Williams is getting his hand raised, and batters Doc with his bullrope! Hansen then tries to hang Williams over the top rope, but Sgt. Slaughter hits the ring and puts a stop to that!
Slaughter then turns his attention to Williams, allowing Hansen to jump him from behind! Hansen stomps away at Slaughter until several wrestlers, referees and even some security personnel, are able to drag Hansen from the ring.
