Smoky Mountain Wrestling TV
Saturday August 5, 1988
Taped on Tuesday August 1 at
Civic Coliseum Ballroom in Knoxville TN
- Les Thatcher and Johnny Weaver welcomed everyone in to the show today, saying our main event is going to be The Original Midnight Express taking on Johnny & Davey Rich in a non-title match. They were joined by Ron Fuller who was out to pull the name for today’s TV Title match challenger….and it’s Sam Houston!
- “Gorgeous” Gary Young pinned Gene Ligon with a fisherman’s suplex. During the bout, Thatcher and Weaver commented again about how so many top wrestlers are trying to get into SMW, and Young is a perfect example. Thatcher re-iterated what Ron Fuller said last week, that every week for a while, we will be seeing new faces in action here in SMW.
- After the bout, Young gave an interview saying that he’s the biggest thing to hit the wrestling scene around here in a long time. He’s the best looking wrestler around, and the best, and he’s coming after all the pretty-boy pretenders like Sam Houston, Tim Horner, and Scott Armstrong.
- Commercial Break
- Sam Houston caught the Russian Assassin with a lariat to win the SMW TV Title in a hot match with a lot of action. Sam celebrated in the ring while Thatcher and Weaver talked about how when the title was created, Houston was in the match to determine the first champion against his friend Nelson Royal, who turned on him and cheated to win the title, and how now Sam Houston has his redemption.
- A music video was played hyping the arrival of “Fabulous” Steve Keirn to SMW next week. At the end of the video, Keirn looked in the camera and said he is coming for the Smoky Mountain Heavyweight title.
- Commercial Break
- “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel made David Isley submit to his figure-four leglock.
- Buddy did an interview at the desk, saying that last week he was out and told Sam Houston he was looking for him. Now, Houston has an even bigger target on his back since he just won the TV title. Buddy said he is looking forward to kicking Sam’s butt, and now it will be even sweeter when he takes the TV title at the same time.
- Commercial Break
- The Rock & Roll Express were out for an interview and said that on the Hot Summer Nights tour, The Destruction Crew caused them to lose the tag team belts to the Midnight Express by attacking them before the match. They don’t know what these young guys have in mind, but if it’s a fight their looking for, they’ve found one! And the Midnight Express better not get too comfortable with the tag titles, because they are still looking for the Midnight Express too.
- As they left, Ron Fuller rejoined the guys to remind everyone that SMW debuts on TNN next Saturday night at 10:00 PM after Crook & Chase for two hours of great wrestling action. Also, you’ll still be able to see SMW right here on the channel you’re currently watching at its normally scheduled time. He also said they have a tremendous card lined up for the show on TNN next Saturday night, as Ole Anderson and Ivan Koloff are signed to do battle one on one! Also in action on that first show will be The Rock & Roll Express, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, Jimmy Valiant & Pez Whatley, Steve Keirn making his debut, Sam Houston will defend the TV Title, and the Scott Armstrong will be in action as well.
- “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan pinned Tony Hernandez after a running football tackle. After the bout was over and Duggan was getting his hand raised, Gypsy Joe of all people came in from behind and attacked Duggan! He had some initial success, but it only took a moment for Duggan to rally and give Gypsy a running clothesline that sent him from the ring.
- Commercial Break
- Duggan was at the desk after the break, and Thatcher questioned him on why Gypsy Joe was attacking him. Duggan said he had no clue, but if he wants to try again, he’s more than welcome too, and he’ll kick his butt all over Knoxville! He said that this Monday night, he gets his rematch with Vladimir Pietrov for the SMW title, and when he gets him in the ring at the Civic Coliseum in Knoxville, he’s taking the belt back for all the fans and the good old US of A.
- Main Event: Johnny and Davey Rich def. The Original Midnight Express in a non-title match when Johnny pinned Randy Rose with a Thesz press while Condrey and Davey were fighting in the corner after all four men had gotten in the ring. The Midnights continued the brawl after the match, and the four of them fought around ringside as Thatcher said these two teams will meet for the titles this Monday night in Knoxville! He reminded fans to tune in again next week as the show was going off the air.
