INDEPENDENCE DAY SPECIAL
Monday, July 4, 1988
The Big One (Memphis, TN)
1) Southern Tag Team Championship Tournament, Semi-Final: The Fantastics defeated Bull Pain and Jimmy Golden (w/ Jamie Dundee) at 8:18 when Tommy Rogers and Bobby Fulton connected with the Rocket Launcher on Bull Pain for the pin.
2) Southern Tag Team Championship Tournament, Semi-Final: 'Superstar' Bill Dundee and 'The King of Wrestling' Roy Lee Welch (w/ Jamie Dundee) defeated Dutch Mantell and Dory Funk Jr. at 7:19 when Dundee connected with the Bomb's Away on The Dutchman. However, that wasn't the full story. The crowd became electric half-way through the match, when Robert Fuller made his way down to ringside! The fans were going crazy as the real Tennessee Stud chased Jamie Dundee around the ringside area. As Jamie tied up the referee, Robert Fuller cracked a smile, reached into the ring and drilled Dutch Mantell across the forehead with a roll of quarters. The fans were stunned as Robert Fuller and Jamie Dundee then celebrated on the floor as the Superstar finished off Mantell to advance. On the way back to the dressing room, Robert Fuller laughed in Lance Russell's face as Lance asked what the heck Fuller was up to.
3) Southern Jr. Heavyweight Championship: Nelson Royal (c) defeated Mike Jackson at 8:45 by forcing him to submit to the Indian Deathlock. This was Royal's first appearance in Memphis in several years.
4) Shane Douglas and Wendell Cooley defeated The Infernos (Fire & Flame) at 7:13 when Douglas lifted the much-larger Flame into a belly-to-belly duplex for the three count to score an impressive victory.
5) Adrian Street and his mystery partner Miss Linda defeated PY Chu Hi and Tojo Yamamoto at 6:12 when Miss Linda pinned Tojo Yamamoto after a body-slam and a big knee drop after Street laid out both PY and Tojo with a double DDT.
6) 'The World's Strongest Man' Doug Furnas pinned Hollywood John Tatum at 5:11 when Furnas connected with a ring-shaking power-slam on Tatum. Furnas high-fives fans around the ringside area after the match.
--INTERMISSION--
7) Dirty White Boy fought Mr. Olympia (w/ Jamie Dundee) to a double count-out at 8:18 when both men brawled out to the floor and through the crowd, before Eddie Marlin and a half-dozen wrestles were able to break them up.
8) Southern Tag Team Champion Tournament, Finals: 'Superstar' Bill Dundee and 'The King of Wrestling' Roy Lee Welch (w/ Jamie Dundee and Robert Fuller) defeated The Fantastics at 19:38 when Bill Dundee rolled up Bobby Fulton to become the new champions. Once again, Robert Fuller and Jamie Dundee proved to be deciding factor here. Just when it looked like The Fantastics had victory in their grasp, Jamie Dundee hopped on the apron to distract referee Tommy Gilbert. At the same time, Robert Fuller reached into the ring and drilled Bobby Fulton with a low blow. Tommy Rogers tried to come in but was cut off by Roy Lee Welch while a re-directed Tommy Gilbert counted the fall. Robert Fuller and Jamie Dundee yucked it up again after the match as they celebrated with new champions Superstar Dundee and the self-proclaimed King of Wrestling.
9) PPW Heavyweight Championship: Curt Hennig (c) defeated Adrian Adonis at 22:04 when Hennig caught Adonis in the Perfect-Plex for the victory. This was a tremendous match where Adonis proved he could still go with the best of them. Adonis nearly had the win in hand when he locked in Goodnight Irene and Hennig seemed on the verge of passing out, before he desperately flung himself into the ropes to break the hold. Curt mounted his comeback and eventually scored the win. As a sign of respect, Curt Hennig shook Adrian Adonis' hand after the match.
**Sadly, news broke just 24 hours later that Adrian Adonis had been killed along with Pat Kelly, and Dave 'Wildman' McKigney. Franke, McKigney, and Victor Arko when they were involved in a car accident in Lewisporte, Newfoundland.**
--INTERMISSION #2--
10) No Holds Barred: 'The Universal Heartthrob' Austin Idol and Jeff Jarrett defeated Kamala and 'Missouri Tiger' Jeff Gaylord (w/ Sir Oliver Humperdinck) at 11:37 when Idol drilled Kamala with his axe-handle Minerva and slammed him for the pin while Jeff Jarrett was fighting Jeff Gaylord in the aisle way.
11) Southern Heavyweight Championship: 'Wildfire' Tommy Rich (c) defeated Jos LeDuc (w/ Sir Oliver Humperdinck) at 12:50 when a bloody and battered Rich was able to catch LeDuc with the Lou These Press for the pin. LeDuc beat the holy hell out of Rich, but Tommy refused to stay down no much blood he lost. Just as LeDuc tried to repeat the past by press-slamming Rich from the ring through the ringside table, Rich slipped out. Tommy then knocked LeDuc off guard with a dropkick, hit the ropes and connected with the Thesz Press for the win. Austin Idol and Jeff Jarrett were out to celebrated with Tommy after the match.
