World Class Championship Wrestling presents...
5th annual Parade of Champions
May 28, 1988
Texas Stadium
Irving, TX
There are two rings set up on the floor of the stadium: one setup normally, the other with the Triple Dome of Terror around it! Ralph Pulley opens the festivities with a heartfelt rendition of “God Bless the USA”.
Captain's Match: Lance Von Erich vs. “Mr. Magnificent” Kevin Kelly (w/Buddy Roberts): The fans chose these two men from the two teams that will participate in the Triple Dome of Terror later today. The Triple Dome match is set up like the War Games and this match will replace the coin flip as a means to determine which team will have the advantage. Lance takes it right to Mr. Magnificent Early on and looks like he's well on his way to a win. The turning point comes when lance applies the Iron Claw. Kelly grabs Lance's trunks and throws him through the ropes to the stadium floor! Roberts is waiting and bulldogs Lance on the turf! After that, Lance bravely tries to continue fighting, but he's obviously been hurt! Finally, Mr. Magnificent applies the full nelson! Nobody has broken it yet and Lance can't break it either, but he refuses to submit! Finally, Rick Hazzard stops the match and declares Kelly the winner at the 10:22 mark! The Fabulous Blondes will have the one man advantage in the Triple Dome of Terror! Brian Adias and Steve Simpson come out and lead Lance to the back, It looks like he is in serious pain!
Caribbean Title match: Carlos Colon © vs. Sika: Sika gives Carlos quite a beating and it looks like the Samoan will take the title. Colon pulls out a win at the 9:28 mark when he applies the figure four and scores the submission!
Brad Armstrong, Mil Mascaras, & the Missing Link (w/Sunshine) vs. The Great Kabuki, the Iron Sheik, & Al Perez (w/Gary Hart): A wild and crazy match! Armstrong, Mil, & the Link take it in 8:56 when Armstrong pins Texas Champ Perez after a Russian leg sweep!
The Snowman & “Kryptonite” Ken Patera vs. Iceman King Parsons & “Black Superman” Tony Atlas: Snowman and Patera enter first, then we hear...
Iceman and Atlas come to the ring to a hero's welcome! It's power vs. power as Atlas and Patera start out. The two strongmen seem equal. Parsons tags in and uses his speed and boxing ability to keep the heels off balance. Unfortunately, Ice misses a butt bump on Snowman and the bad guys take control, isolating Parsons and giving him a beating! Finally, Iceman manages to tag Atlas and the match turns into a pier six brawl! Atlas catches Snowman in the sleeper and puts him away! Atlas & Parsons win at the 12:22 mark!
Mexican Death Match-Tito Santana vs, “Ragin Bull” Manny Fernandez: The Ragin Bull hands his prized sombrero to David Manning, who climbs up the 10 foot pole in one of the corner of the ring and places the hat on top of it. The winner will be the man who retrieves the sombrero. Tito and Manny have yet another war here at the Stadium! It looks like Tito will get the win as he hits the flying forearm on Manny and starts up the turnbuckles! Tito is on the top turnbuckle and starting to climb when the Bull gets to his feet and climbs up behind Tito...Ragin Bull gives Tito a belly to belly off the top rope! Both me lie on the mat motionless until Manning reaches the count of nine! At that point, the Bull manages to slowly get up and climb the pole! Manny gets the sombrero and puts it on his head! The Bull descends and is standing on the top rope. By now, Tito has struggled to his feet. Still suffering from the punishment he has absorbed, Tito staggers into the ropes! That causes Manny to lose his balance and he falls and straddles the top rope, then falls to the stadium floor! The sombrero never leaves the Bull's head! Manny will be sore for the next week, but he has won the MEXICAN DEATH MATCH!!! Time of the match: 12:22.
Bunkhouse Match: Sid Vicious vs. Ron Bass (w/ Gary Hart): Before the bout begins, a ring attendant leads a jackass to ringside. The loser of this match will ride the poor animal around Texas Stadium in disgrace!
Both men have taped fists and they put them to good use as the batter each other all over the ring!Bass uses a length of rope to choke Sid down and it looks bad, but the crowd's “GO SID GO!” chant gives new life to the big man and he fights back! Sid escapes the rope, takes off one of his cowboy boots and proceeds to beat Bass into a bloody pulp! Gary Hart enters the ring to interfere, but ends up eating a chokeslam from Sid! Bass has takene off his boot with spur attached and charges at Sid! Sid kicks Bass right in the face! Sid takes Bass' boot, whips him to the ropes, and nails the Outlaw in the face with his own weapon! Sid covers Bass and gets the pin at the 8:13 mark!
After the match, Bass, beaten and bloodied, is loaded on the jackass. A horrified Gary Hart leads the animal around the perimeter of Texas Stadium as the fans laugh and make braying noises! It is doubtful if Ron Bass will ever show his face in World Class again! Maybe Hart won't either!
Austin Idol & Chris Adams vs. Terry Funk & Big John Studd:
Funk and Studd enter first, to this music...
Then, the music changes...
Chris Adams and Austin Idol enter Texas Stadium to a huge ovation!
This match is an all out war that goes all over Texas Stadium! Finally, at the 13:29 mark, Funk pins Idol after nailing him with the branding iron Funk carried to the ring!
American Tag Team Title Match[Texas Tornado Rules]: The Killer Bees(c) vs. The New Breed:
The music plays and the challengers enter the stadium....
...and they are being accompanied by the nefarious Gary Hart! It looks like the Chris Champion & Sean Royal are now under the Hart management umbrella!
The music changes and the champs, Brian Blair & Jim Brunzell make their entrance...
The Texas Tornado format guarantees total chaos. At one point, the Bees get thrown from the ring and don the masks on the turf. They re-enter and that tactic does seem to throw the New Breed off. Eventually, Gary Hart's presence pays off as he climbs on the apron and nails one of the Bees with what appears to be a slapjack of some kind. Seconds later, Sean Royal pounces on the fallen Bee and gets the pin at the 13:44 mark!
THE NEW BREED ARE YOUR NEW AMERICAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS!!!!!
Triple Dome Of Terror: Lance Von Erich, Steve & Shaun Simpson, and Chris & Mark Youngblood vs. The Fabulous Blondes (Buddy Roberts, Eric Embry, Ken Timbs, Doug Sommers & Mr. Magnificent): The rules are almost identical to the War Games. The only exception being that the match can also end when all the members of one team escape the cage through the top level.
The Blondes enter the Stadium in a long white stretch limo. Then, the music for their opponents plays:
Here come the Simpsons, the Youngbloods,
Fritz Von Erich???
and....
Brian Adias???
When the faces arrive at ringside, Fritz takes the mic...
FRITZ: Friends, you saw what happened earlier this afternoon. My nephew Lance was too courageous to submit to the full nelson! I admire the young man's guts, but it cost him a heavy price! The doctors in the dressing room said there's no way they could clear him to wrestle this match because some damage was done to his neck! Brian Adias here is Kerry's best friend and is one of the finest young men in professional wrestling today! The Simpson boys and the Youngbloods were willing to take this match at a handicap, but Brian, standup guy that he is, wouldn't hear of it! Brian Adias will stand in for Lance!
The first two men to enter the cage are Steve Simpson and Eric Embry. There's no love lost here and they tear into each other like wildcats! Embry gets busted open early as Steve slams his head into the cage! At the 5 minute mark, Simpson has applied the sleeper on Embry in the middle cage! Now it's time for the Blondes to take a one man advantage!
Ken Timbs enters the cage and it's 2 on 1 for the next two minutes! Timbs and Embry have a bunch of experience as a team and they really work the popular South African over in the middle cage! They are setting up for a spike piledriver when the buzzer sounds, bringing on a new wrestler for the Simpson/Youngblood squad!
Shaun Simpson hits the ring to help his big brother! The Simpsons and Blondes battle to thr top tier of the cage! Shaun manages to escape, giving his team its first step toward victory, but Steve is at a 2 on 1 disadvantage! And time ticks down, the buzzersounds, and Buddy Roberts hits the ring for the Blondes team!
Roberts climbs to the second level while Timbs and Embry dump Steve down through a trap door in the cage to join Roberts! Embry joins Roberts on the second level to double team Steve while Timbs escapes from the top level to give each team one man out of the cage!Roberts and Embry work Steve over until he ducks a double clothesline and comes back to clothesline both Blondes as the buzzer sounds!
Brian Adias enters the Triple Dome of Terror! It's basically a texas tornado match for the next few minutes with the Blondes getting the worst of it!Then, the buzzer sounds!
“Pretty Boy” Doug Sommers hits the ring and gives the Blondes the advantage!Simpson and Adias fight for their lives and have turned the tide in their favor when the buzzer sounds and Chris Youngblood hits the ring! Chris is like a house afire as he nails Sommers, Roberts, & Embry with chops!
Two minutes pass quickly and the buzzer sounds, bringing Mr. Magnificent into the match for the Blondes! This is a real turning point! Mr. Magnificent is like a wrecking machine as he tears into Simpson, Adias, & Youngblood! He throws each of them facefirst into the cage and then gives each of them a bodyslam that rattles the entire Dome! Youngblood manages to get back to his feet and start chopping away on Kelly! During this brawl, Sommers, Roberts, Embry, Simpson, & Adias manage to climb out of the cage! At the moment the buzzer sounds to bring the last man, Mark Youngblood into the Dome, Kelly fights back and flattens Chris with a clothesline!
Mark comes in and nails Mr. Magnificent with a pair of dropkicks. Mark helps Chris to his feet and makes sure he's ok. Kelly takes the opportunity to attempt to climb out, but the Youngbloods pull him back in and nail him with a double chop! With Kevin Kelly down, the Youngbloods attempt to climb out of the cage and win the match for their team! Chris makes it out and Mark is almost there...NO! Kelly grabs his leg and drags him back into the cage! Kelly throws Youngblood into each side of the cage, bloodying him! Then, Mr. Magnificent applies the full nelson! The hold takes its toll and, within a few minutes, Youngblood is limp like a rag doll! Mark hasn't submitted, but Chris Youngblood and Steve Simpson wave white towels to surrender on his behalf before permanent damage is done! The Fabulous Blondes win and, after Kelly gets out of the Triple Dome of Terror, they do a victory strut as the Texas Stadium crowd rains down boos!
NWA World Title Match(2/3 falls, 60 minute time limit); Ricky “the Dragon” Steamboat © vs. Ron Garvin [American Champion]:
The popular American Champion is brought to the ring in the back of a monster truck! Garvin smiles and waves to the crowd and throws his towel, but once he enters the ring, he's all business!
The World Champion makes a spectacular entrance! He does his fire blowing routine before jogging to the ring. Steamboat gets a mixed reaction: mostly cheers, but a smattering of boos.
FIRST FALL: Both men wrestle scientifically early on, but Steamboat gets heat by wrestling in a very defensive style and using some Larry Zybysko type stalling tactics. Garvin, on the other hand, is very aggressive, going for a pin at every opportunity. If pro wrestling was scored with points, Garvin would have built up a substantial lead by the ten minute mark. It looks like the challenger is well on his way to the title as he wins the first fall with a sunset flip off the top rope at the 13:57 mark!
SECOND FALL: Now that the pressure is on Steamboat, he picks it up a bit. He starts using the martial arts as his main weapon. Garvin fires back with punches, open hand chops, headbutts and elbows. When the match spills to the turf, both men end up going into the ringpost and bleeding! When referee Rick Hazard finally gets them back into the ring, Steamboat catches Garvin in a backslide and evens it at 1 fall apiece at the 30:09 mark! The fans are on their feet as the match reaches its final stages...
THIRD FALL: Steamboat starts the fall very aggressively by going after Garvin's legs. After working Ronnie's legs for several minutes, the champ applies the figure four! Steamboat gets some heat by using the Flair tactic of pulling the ropes for added leverage. Garvin manages to reverse the hold, but Steamboat is close to the ropes and drapes his arm over the bottom strand to force a break. Garvin takes over at this point, almost to the point of making it a one sided match. It looks like it's over when Garvin applies a Boston crab in the center of the ring!Steamboat makes an awesome escape of the hold, sending Ronnie flying out of the ring in the process! The champ follows garvin to the turf and they brawl out there! Both men end up being rammed into the ringpost and being split open before they roll back in! Mark Lowrance calls for five minutes remaining and they start going for fast pins! After several two counts, the two warriors are in the center of the ring, trading blows! Garvin throwing his patented open hand chops and Steamboat throwing his knife edge chops. Both mens' chests look like raw meat as the blood flows!Lowrance calls thirty seconds remaining! They continue to fire away! As the bell rings, signifying the expiration of the time limit, they are still in the center of the ring, chopping away! Bronko Lubich, David Manning, & Fritz Von Erich come in to help separate these two great champions!
We might have some trouble as Garvin has the NWA belt! No, he hands the strap to Steamboat and offers his hand! Steamboat and Garvin shake hands!Steamboat asks for the mic...
STEAMBOAT: I want to say something! I've wrestled them all! Flair, Race, Piper, Inoki, Baba, Sgt. Slaughter, the Funks, and the Briscoes! You people have a great champion who is as tough as any of them!Ronnie, I don't duck challenges and I promise that there will be a rematch!
Now, Ronnie has the mic...
GARVIN: Next time, how about no time limit?
The fans roar! Steamboat raises Garvin's hand again before both men leave the ring to a huge ovation!
WWF Tag Team Title Match: Kerry & Kevin Von Erich(C) vs. Chavo & Hector Guerrero:
The Guerreos enter first and they seem very cocky. Because of their comments toward the Von Erichs, the majority of the fans are booing.
The music plays...
Here come Kerry & Kevin and the fans, especially the females, go crazy!
This is an exciting, fast paced match. After several near falls and Kevin playing the face in peril role for nearly 10 minutes, Kevin hits Hector with the flying bodypress out of the corner at the 20:01 mark to score the victory! After the bout, Fritz enters the ring, embraces his boys, raises their hands in victory! The fans will go home happy today!
My sincere thanks to Kimmel and Tlyne for allowing me to use their champions.
