Smoky Mountain Wrestling TV
Broadcast in syndication on Saturday July 8, 1988
The show opened with Les Thatcher and promoter Ron Fuller seated at the desk in a closed studio, where they said this week is all about the Hot Summer Nights Tour. They talked about all the great action, and started the discussion off with The Rock & Roll Express vs. Midnight Express feud, and said that on the first night of the tour, the R&R defended the belts in Chattanooga, but on July 4 in Knoxville, the Midnight Express won the belts. They then went to highlights of the match:
The Original Midnight Express, Condrey and Rose w/ Baby Doll def. The Rock & Roll Express at 21:30 to win the SMW Tag Team Titles when Baby Doll sprayed Ricky Morton in the face with hair spray allowing him to fall victim to the Double Goozle.
Next up, they hyped the crazy action they've been seeing in the Thunderdome Battle Royals, and showed clips from the first one in Chattanooga on July 1:
Over-the-top-rope elimination rules until it's down to just two men, then pin or submission is the only way to win. Come dressed as you are, anything goes, street fight rules.
Thunderdome Battle Royal Participants….
- Brooklyn Brawler who came with a stool
- Tim Horner who came out with his fists taped
- The Moondog with his leg bone
- The Stormtrooper wearing a helmet
- George South dressed in jeans, boots, and bandana
- The Blonde Bombers, Rip Rogers and Ken Timbs dressed in matching gear. Halfway down the aisle, they stopped at a man on crutches in the crowd, and ripped the crutches from his hands and they each carried one to the ring
- Nelson Royal in jeans and boots, and carrying an extra cowboy boot
- “Pistol” Pez Whatley
- “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel wearing a hockey mask
- The Bullet who came out carrying an axe handle like he was Buford Pusser
- Jungle music then played and out came The Botswana Beast!
- Barry Horowitz came out with a bottle of baby powder
- The crowd erupted when Wahoo McDaniel made his way to the ring with his Indian strap!
The bell rang and everyone engaged in battle.
Horowitz was squirting baby powder in the faces of several good guys, but it was quickly taken away from him by Wahoo, who squirted it in his face and quickly tossed him out over the top rope.
The battle raged on in and around the ring. The Stormtrooper had no luck with his helmet, and caught a shot from The Bullet’s axe handle to the mid-section and was quickly tossed from the match.
Landel was head butting people while wearing the hockey mask, and used that to eliminate George South.
Rip and Timbs double teamed Horner with their crutches, but Wahoo broke that up with several lashes from his strap across their backs, then he and Horner tossed both of the from the match.
Pez was tied up with Botswana Beast and it was looking grim, but Tim Horner helped out briefly by jumping on the Beasts back. The Beast pulled him off and tossed him though.
Nelson Royal was swinging his cowboy boot high over head, but The Moondog caught him with the bone and knocked him over the top. Immediately after, The Bullet came up from behind and dumped The Moondog.
Landel got rid of Pez after taking his mask off and hitting Pez with it.
Wahoo and The Beast were squaring off while The Bullet and the Brooklyn Brawler slugged it out. Landel just stood by watching. Finally, the Brawler missed a charge and was dumped over the top by The Bullet. Landel made his move but was caught and Bullet gave him a big clothes line to put him down on the mat. He quickly regained his feet however.
The Botswana Beast made a leap at Wahoo who caught him with a chop, and then picked the big man up for a body slam. He deposited him over the top rope, but Landel scooped his legs and eliminated him as well!
This left Landel and the Bullet in a fight to the finish. Landel got an advantage and used his hockey mask to open a cut on Bullet’s forehead. He worked on the cut and even broke one of the crutches over his back! He then locked on his figure four leg lock looking for the submission. The Bullet grasped around and got ahold of the baby powder bottle and shot Landel in the face with it, causing him to break the hold. When Landel regained his sight, he was met a shot from the axe handle in the gut which doubled him over, then a shot across the back that stood him upright again. The Bullet quickly dropped the handle and nailed Landel with a double karate thrust to the throat and dove in for the winning pin fall at 14:55!
The Bullet has won $1000 and qualified for the TunderDome Battle Royal Finals on July 15 in Johnson City!
Thatcher and Fuller ran down the list of winner so far, and the men who will be in the finals next week in Johnson City....Pez Whatley, The Bullet, Brooklyn Brawler, Doug Furnas, and Mike Enos of the Destruction Crew.
Next, they talked about how Ron Wright introduced his new man, "Crusher" Jerry Blackwell, and he defeated Pez Whatley in Knoxville, but the big story is the return of Jimmy "The Boogie Woogie Man" Valiant. The clips:
Blackwell came to the ring and it didn't take very long for he and Pez to start hooking it up. Pez had a hard time countering the size of Blackwell, but made good use of his speed and took the fight to the big man. Finally, Wright tried to interfere, but was cut off by a punch from Les Thatcher! The distraction on the outside was just enough for Blackwell to catch Pez off guard and pick him up and flatten him with a power slam for the winning pin at 9:54. Afterwards, he helped Wright shake off Thatcher, and the two of them started putting the boots to Pez. Pez tried to fight back, so Wright started motioning to the locker room, and out came running Rip Rogers and Ken Timbs to join in on the attack. They got Pez down and held him as Blackwell came off the ropes with a huge splash on the prone Pez. He started to do it again when the crowd erupted, as "The Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant was slowly making his way to the ring, looking suspisious. He slowly climbed in the ring and looked around at the three heels and Ron Wright. Wright smiled at Boogie, and then told him to get Pez!!! Boogie went over to Pez and grabbed him by the hair and pulled him to his feet and held him there by the hear just jawing at him. He pulled way back for a big punch to level Pez, but pushed him out of the way and blasted Wright instead!!! He then fired off on both Rip and Timbs before Blackwell got him from behind. Pez was regaining his senses and joined Valiant as they fought off the heels to a roar from the crowd! After the heels bailed from the ring, Boogie and Pez stared each other down for a bit before Pez held out his hand. Boogie looked at it, and then looked to the crowd before finally slapping his hand and grabbing Pez in a big hug and the two of them exchanged high fives and danced for the crowd as Boogie's music played before they exited together
An interview from the locker room that night was shown with Boogie and Pez, where Boogie said he wasn't sure if he could trust Pez again, but tonight, he watched him take a butt kicking, so he knows he's true to his word. Pez is his street brotha, and the Boogie Man will always be there for his street brothas! Tonight in Pikeville....Blonde Bombers gonna feel the noise when The Boogie Man and The Pistol slap them around and show them you don't mess with the Street People! Whoo! Mercy Daddy!
They then talked about how Ivan Koloff caused Ole Anderson to lose to Hacksaw Duggan in Gatlinburg TN on July 2nd, and showed clips:
In the main event, for the Smoky Mountain Heavyweight title, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan pinned Ole Anderson after a running football tackle. Ole gave as good as he got in the match, and was in control until Ivan Koloff showed up at ringside. This constant distraction led to Ole looking over his shoulder the whole time and eventually falling prey to Duggan’s. Ole mounted the top rope in attempt to drive his knee into Duggan’s shoulder, but Ivan shook the ropes causing Ole to fall into the ring. When he got up, Duggan caught him with his finisher at 15:20. After the match while Duggan celebrated, Ole chased Ivan from the ring side area back to the dressing room.
Out of the clips, they had an interview taped with Ole Anderson in the locker room after the match, where Ole said that Ivan Koloff has stuck his nose in his business too many times, and now he's coming after all three Russians!
Finally, they talked about Duggan successfully defending the belt so far against Ole Anderson, Buddy Landel, Great Kabuki, and Vladimir Pietrov on the 4th in Knoxville.....
"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan became the first man in SMW to defeat Vladimir Pietrov and hold onto the SMW title when he caught the big man with a leaping football tackle shoulder block from the top rope. He had hit him with 3 of his usual running football tackles before even knocking him down, but could not get the pin that way.
They said that Duggan and the Russians still have several matches left on the tour, and Duggan has some friends coming into the area that the fans won't want to miss....
