THE AMERICAN WRESTLING ASSOCIATION
TUESDAY, JULY 4, 1988
MCNICHOLS SPORTS ARENA IN DENVER, CO
OWEN HART beats PEGASUS KID by pinfall in the opening bout. These two have been tearing it up in the Jr. Heavyweight ranks in Japan, and an agreement between Nick Bockwinkel and All-Japan promoter Shohei Baba has brought them to the American Wrestling Association. They put on a wrestling clinic for almost 15 minutes, before Owen gets the win, catching Pegasus Kid with a Moonsault press for the pinfall.
JACK FOLEY beats NORVELL AUSTIN by pinfall following a running kneelift.
THE PLAYBOYS: TOM PRITCHARD & JIMMY DEL RAY (w/ Diamond Dallas Page) defeats BILL & RANDY MULKEY. Diamond Dallas Page’s team of the Playboys make their in-ring debut here, and make short work of the Mulkey brothers. Pritchard and Del Ray get the win after hitting a double flapjack on Randy Mulkey.
“COWBOY” BOB ORTON JR beats JIMMY “SUPERFLY” SNUKA by pinfall after hitting Snuka with a foreign object, out of view of the referee.
AWA Americas Champion “MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeats WAHOO MCDANIEL. Wahoo’s TV title isn’t on the line for this one. Wahoo, the rugged veteran, takes the fight to Orndorff, and has the champion in a bad way early. Wahoo hits a series of brutal chops, then delivers a big overhead tomahawk chop. That puts Orndorff on the mat, but when Wahoo covers him, Jimmy Hart puts Orndorff’s leg on the ropes, then points it out to the ref. Orndorff eventually battles back, and soon after, drops Wahoo on his head with a Piledriver for the pinfall.
AWA World Tag Team Champions THE BRITISH BULLDOGS: DAVEY BOY SMITH & DYNAMITE KID beat THE OUTLAWS: BLACK BART & THE MASKED HANGMAN. The Outlaws give the Bulldogs all they can handle here, as they isolate Davey Boy in their corner in the early going. Smith, the powerhouse of the team, tries to hold his own, but the constant double-teaming is too much for him, and he takes a vicious beating at the hands of the Outlaws. Smith is eventually able to get to his corner and make the hot tag to Dynamite, who comes in and cleans house. It’s short-lived, though, as Dynamite also falls victim to the double-teaming of the challengers. As Davey Boy recovers, he comes back into the ring, and we ned up with a donneybrook, as all four guys are in the ring at the same time. The referee finally gets order restored, and the Bulldogs take over. Dynamite wears the Hangman down, and after dropping him with a snap suplex, Dynamite comes off the top rope with the diving headbutt for the 1, 2, 3!
BRET HART & JIM NEIDHART (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeat THE SUPERPOWERS: SGT. SLAUGHTER & NIKITA KOLOFF in a #1 contenders match. The match is pretty evenly-matched throughout, but in the end, Paul Orndorff comes down to ringside. While Neidhart brawls with Nikita, Orndorff distracts Slaughter, allowing Bret to roll Sarge up for the pinfall victory! As Bret and Neidhart get their hands raised, Slaughter jumps out of the ring and brawls with Orndorff down the aisle and to the back.
STAN HANSEN beats KING KONG BRODY. Just like they did last Friday night on TV, Hansen and Brody tear into each other as soon as the bell sounds. After about 15 minutes of wild, out of control brawling, Brody has the upper hand, and goes for a kneedrop from the top rope, but Hansen rolls out of the way! As Brody struggles to get to his feet, Hansen sizes him up . . . and hits the Lariat! Brody crumbles to the mat, and Hansen covers him for the 1, 2, 3!
NO DQ, NO COUNT-OUT MATCH:
AWA World Heavyweight Champion STEVE “DR. DEATH” WILLIAMS beats ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER. After several DQ and count-out finishes, these two finally meet in a one on one match where there must be a winner! Abdullah breaks out his trusty fork early, but Williams gets it away from him, and bloodies the Butcher with it! Abby keeps fighting back, but Williams won’t be denied here, and in the end, he leaps off the top rope with a flying shoulderblock, putting Abby on the mat, and Williams covers him for the 1, 2, 3!
Steve Williams has done it, he’s finally pinned Abdullah the Butcher right in the middle of the ring, and he did it in his hometown of Denver!
After the main event, the fans are treated to a fireworks display!
