Broadcast nationwide on Superstation WGN
Taped June 22, 1988 at the Brown County Arena in Green Bay, WI
“From coast to coast, border to border, and continent to continent, this is the AWA, the major leagues of professional wrestling!”
Rod Trongard opens the show, and welcomes his co-host Diamond Dallas Page!
They hype tonight’s show, which will feature a huge main event, as former tag team partners Stan Hansen and King Kong Brody go one on one!
Trongard talks about last week’s main event, where Sgt. Slaughter teamed up with World champion Steve Williams to challenge Americas champ Paul Orndorff and Abdullah the Butcher!
VTR: Williams/Slaughter vs Orndorff/Abby, JIP:
Late in the match, Steve Williams and Abby brawl around ringside, while Slaughter and Orndorff, the legal men, go tooth and nail inside the ring. Orndorff has the upper hand, but when he tries to cinch Slaughter up for the Piledriver, Sarge backdrops Orndorff instead. Slaughter runs the ropes and as Orndorff gets to his feet, Sarge puts him right back down with a clothesline. From there, Slaughter connects with the Slaughter Cannon for the 1, 2, 3!
Slaughter has pinned the Americas champion!
As Slaughter gets his hand raised, Williams and Abby continue to brawl on the floor, now making their way into the first few rows of seats, causing fans to scatter in all directions!
END VTR
Trongard says that on July 4, the AWA will be at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado for a big Independence Day spectacular! One of the main events on that card will see Steve Williams put the AWA title on the line against Abdullah the Butcher, and because of the way previous matches between those two have ended, this time there must be a clear winner, there won’t be any DQ’s or count-outs!
Page says that Abdullah is the one man that Williams hasn’t been able to beat in a one on one match, every time they’ve met for the AWA title, Williams has had to rely on a cheap DQ or count-out in order to hang on to his title. This time, he can’t do that, he’ll have to beat Abby, one two three, in the middle of the ring, and Page doesn’t think Williams can do it!
ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER VS. JAKE MILLIMAN. Abby makes short work of Milliman, hitting the Butcher’s Axe elbowdrop for the pinfall in just over a minute! On commentary, Page says that the Butcher is ready for Williams on July 4, and says that when the fans tune in to this program next week, they shouldn’t be surprised to see Abdullah as the new AWA World champion!
Magnum TA is standing by with Sgt. Slaughter. Slaughter talks about pinning Americas champ Paul Orndorff in the tag match last week, and challenges Orndorff to put the belt up against him.
Magnum says that on July 4 in Denver, Slaughter will team up with Nikita Koloff to face Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart, stablemates of Paul Orndorff in Jimmy Hart’s Hart Foundation, in a match where the winners will be named the #1 contenders to the World Tag Team titles.
Slaughter talks a little about Nikita, saying the former Russian Nightmare has denounced the Soviet Union and embraced America whole-heartedly. Sarge says there’s no one he’d rather have as his tag team partner for this match than Nikita.
THE HART FOUNDATION: BRET HART & JIM NEIDHART & PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Jimmy Hart) VS. MR. WRESTLING II & BILLY TWO EAGLES & BILLY WHITECLOUD. The fans are treated to a fun little match here, as Wrestling II and his partners give the Hart Foundation a tough time early on. However, the Foundation eventually takes control, when they isolate Whitecloud in their corner, and work him over. Whitecloud is able to make the hot tag to Wrestling II, and II clears the ring. II controls the next few minutes, going hold for hold with Orndorff, but the Americas champ eventually gains the upper hand, and drops Wrestling II on his head with the Piledriver for the 1, 2, 3.
Larry Nelson talks with Jimmy Hart and his Hart Foundation after the match. Orndorff says that since coming to the AWA, he’s made a name for himself by beating some of the biggest legends in the sport, first it was Jimmy Snuka at WrestleRock, now he just pinned the legendary Wrestling II, and if Sgt. Slaughter wants to face him in the ring, Orndorff would be more than happy to add Sarge’s name to that list!
Jimmy Hart says that Bret and Neidhart are setting their sights on the World Tag titles, and the Bulldogs had better enjoy the belts while they have them, because their title reign is coming to an end!
Magnum TA is standing in front of the AWA backdrop, and talks about the big July 4th show in Denver. A graphic appears on the screen as Magnum talks about the following matches:
For the AWA World Heavyweight championship, no DQ or count-outs, there must be a winner!
Steve Williams vs Abdullah the Butcher!
Stan Hansen vs King Kong Brody!
A match to determine the #1 contenders to the AWA Tag titles!
Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart, with Jimmy Hart in their corner, vs The Superpowers: Sgt. Slaughter and Nikita Koloff!
For the AWA World Tag Team championship!
The British Bulldogs vs the Outlaws: Black Bart & the masked Hangman!
for the Americas championship!
Paul Orndorff vs Wahoo McDaniel!
Jimmy Snuka vs Cowboy Bob Orton Jr!
Plus much, much more!
THE SUPERPOWERS: SGT. SLAUGHTER & NIKITA KOLOFF VS. THE CUBAN ASSASSIN & ATSUSHI ONITA. Slaughter and Koloff dominate the match, with Slaughter pinning Assassin following the Slaughter Cannon.
STAN HANSEN VS. KING KONG BRODY. These two tear into each other to start the match, but they don’t stay in the ring for long. They take the fight to the floor, where they hit each other with anything they can get their hands on. They climb back into the ring just in time to beat the count, but only stay within the confines of the squared circle for a few minutes, then go out to the floor again. This time, they never make it back into the ring, they brawl around ringside, into the first few rows of seats, and eventually down the aisle and out of sight. The official decision is a double count-out!
Magnum TA is standing by with AWA World champion Steve “Dr. Death” Williams. Magnum says that Williams will face Abdullah the Butcher on July 4 in a match with no DQ’s and no count-outs. Williams says that he wanted those stipulations for the match, he’s sick of people saying he can’t beat the Butcher. Doc says that on July 4 in Denver, he’s going to put Abby down and pin him for the 1, 2, 3, right in the middle of the ring.
Trongard and Page wrap things up, with Trongard hyping next week’s show.
