In this catchup thread, I will do a timeline of events from after Valentine's Day Star Wars up until early May.
One of the changes made since our last post was the use of different venues for TV to freshen things up and to attempt to give the show a more “big time” feel. The Sportatorium will still be used, but also expect to see the TV originate from Will Rogers Coliseum Coliseum in Ft. Worth and Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston.
Here are the highlights from WCCW TV:
3/4- Tony Atlas wrestled and, once again, the mystery man was at ringside. Mark Lowrance spoke with Atlas' stalker who calls himself the Snowman. Snowman says he has good reasons to run Atlas out of the sport of wrestling! Al Perez made his return and beat Superstar Bill Dundee convincingly. Ron Bass debuted and looked unbeatable. Chris Adams successfully defended the American Title against Dory Funk, Jr. in a completely scientific match. In a prematch interview, Terry Funk said he was through teaming with his brother and predicted he was the only Funk who would be American Champion!
3/11- J&H International came out in full force for an interview. Gary Hart cited Paul Jones' failure to sign Ron Garvin and claimed Jones was incompetent. At Hart's instruction, the wrestlers gave Jones a horrendous beating and Hart said the organization was now Hart International! On this program, it was a mixed bag for Hart's men: Ron Garvin defeated Iron Sheik with Hart at ringside while Kabuki & Missing Link scored a convincing win over Bill Dundee & Brian Adias. A contract signing was held for an American Title match the next week between Chris Adams and Austin Idol. Terry Funk came out and claimed that since he was a former World Champion, he should get any title matches available. Funk and Idol traded insults before Austin and Adams finally signed. The Killer Bees/New Breed rivalry continued as a Brian Blair-Chris Champion match ended in a no contest when Jim Brunzell and Sean Royal both got involved.
3/18- Austin Idol regained the American Title from Chris Adams in an outstanding match. Terry Funk came to ringside during the match and put the title belt around his waist. After the match, there was an altercation between Funk and Idol. Funk gave Idol four piledrivers: two in the ring, one on the floor, and one through a ringside table. Chris Adams ran Funk off, but the damage was done-Idol was carted out of the arena on a gurney! Also, on the show, Ron Garvin scored a convincing win over Dutch Mantel. Garvin has looked awesome thus far. The cameras spotted Sunshine in the audience and Bill Mercer specualted about her presence. Tito Santanna & Tony Atlas took on Manny Fernandez & the Snowman. The match was a wild, Memphis type brawl and showed that A) the Tito/Fernandez feud is far from over and B) the Atalas/Snowman feud will be quite intense.
3/25- Bill Mercer announces that Austin Idol suffered a serious neck injury at the hands of Terry Funk and that Idol's doctor says that it's questionable whether Idol will be able to defend the American Title within the next 30 days! Sid Vicious defeated three men in a handicap match. Doug Sommers appeared via VTR and talked about how he'd spent most of his career on the wrong side of the fence, but now he's ready to come to WCCW and do the right thing by helping wrestlers like Lance Von Erich, Steve Simpson, and Chris Adams clean up wrestling! The Snowman made his single debut and scores a convincing win against Bill Dundee. Later the Snowman interfered and cost Tony Atlas a loss against the Great Kabuki.
4/1- Austin Idol was interviewed from his home. Idol was wearing a neck brace and said he wasn't sure when he was coming back. Idol thanked the fans who had sent him get well cards and said that when he made it back that he'd be fighting for the fans! Idol also thanked Chris Adams for being a stand up guy. Doug Somers made a successful World Class debut and looked really good. Texas Champion Eric Embry made a successful title defense by pinning Mando Guerrero cleanly. After the match, Steve Simpson brought his younger brother Shaun out and said Shaun was back in Texas. Steve also announced that he had a shot at Embry's Texas title next week on TV! The Fabulous Blondes came out in full force(Embry, Ken Timbs, and Buddy Roberts) and challenged the Simpson boys to a tag team match on TV next week. Shaun pointed out that Steve already had the Texas Title match signed with Embry. Doug Somers came out and offered to team with Shaun against Buddy Roberts & Ken Timbs! Shaun agreed. The Blondes claimed they would take care of business next week! On another front, Gary Hart offered Ronnie Garvin a big money contract with his organization. Just like he had done when Paul Jones made the offer, Garvin turned it down flat! Hart didn't take it well and he called out Kabuki, Iron Sheik, & Ron Bass to beat Garvin down! Chavo & Hector Guerrero defended the American Tag Titles against the Killer Bees. Chavo & Hector wrestled as subtle heels and retained the title as the Bees were counted out after the New Breed came to ringside and lured them into a brawl.
4/8- Terry Funk made what he called an “American Title defense” against Dutch Mantel.Funk wore the belt to the ring and won a hard fought match with the spinning toehold.Chris Adams did color commentary on the match and confronted Funk after the bout, saying the belt belonged to Austin Idol, not Funk! Sid Vicious(w/Fritz Von Erich) won an impressive victory over veteran Ron Bass (w/Gary Hart). Afterwards, Bass claimed it was a fluke and demanded that Hart get a rematch signed! It turned out to be a bad day overall for Hart International as Ron Garvin pins the Iron Sheik to gain a measure of revenge for last week's beatdown. Also, Steve Simpson defeats Eric Embry to win the Texas Title in a thrilling match! It's not all sunshine and roses for the Simpson brothers, though... The tag match with Shaun Simpson and Doug Somers against Fabulous Blondes Ken Timbs and Buddy Roberts turns out to be a trap as Somers turns on Shaun and is revealed to be the newest Blonde!
4/15- After Ron Bass destroys an opponent in a squash, he gets on the mic and demands a rematch with Sid Vicious. Sid is interviewed and says he will take on Bass anyplace and anytime! Fabulous Blondes Eric Embry & Ken Timbstake on Mark & Chris Youngblood. The Youngbloods give Embry & Timbs all they want. The newest Blonde, Doug Somers gets involved and gets Embry & Timbs DQ'd! After the match, Buddy Roberts joins in and the Blondes cut the Youngbloods' hair and destroy their Indian headresses! The Simpsons and Lance Von Erich make the save or it might have been worse! Gary Hart leads the team of Kabuki & the Missing Link in to challenge Chavo & Hector Guerrero for the American Tag Title. Kabuki & Link win the titles as Kabuki blows the green mist into Hector's eyes and Link follows it up with a powerslam for the pin!
4/22- Ron Bass (w/Gary Hart) takes on Sid Vicious(w/Fritz Von Erich) in a rematch. Bass attacks Sid at the bell and delivers a vicious beating. Sid manages to get the win, but barely! After the match, Bass viciously attacks Sid with a spur and cuts Sid's forehead with the spur as Iron Sheik and Kabuki come out and help Hart hold Fritz back! The Simpsons and Youngbloods teamed up to win an 8 man tag match. Afterwards, the two sets of brothers vowed to get revenge on the Fabulous Blondes in a postmatch interview.
4/29: A cold opening shows Sid Vicious in a blackened studiowith his head bandaged. Sid swears that he will run Ron Bass out of WCCW for what Ron did last week!
Tony Atlas overwhelms Dr. X in a singles match, finishing the masked man with the sleeperhold.
A VTR shows the Snowman standing in front of a large box. The words “DANGER!” and “TOXIC MATERIAL!” are painted on the box. Snowman says that Tony Atlas might be “the Black Superman”, but Snowman has Atlas' Kryptonite in the box! Snowman also claims that he is stronger than Atlas and challenges Tony to an arm wrestling match!
Bill Mercer informs the fans of several rulings from the WCCW Board of Directors:
1. Due to his inability to defend the American Title, Austin Idol has been stripped of the championship. On 5/14/88, in San Antonio, at the Hemisfair Arena, a tournament will be held to determine a new champion. If Idol is cleared by his physician, he will be given a slot in the tourney.
2. Terry Funk is not the American Champion and he is oredered to turn the title belt over to a WCCW official immediately!
3. Next week's program will be dedicated to a round robin tournament between the Killer Bees, the New Breed, & the Guerrero Brothers where the winner gets ana American Tag Team Title match against the new champs Kabuki & Missing Link the following week!
4. A conflict of interest exists with Fritz Von Erich acting as bothe WCCW president and Sid Vicious' advisor. Effectively immediately, Fritz will not be allowed to advise Sid!
Terry Funk takes on Brian Adias in an “American Title match”. Big John Studd accompanies Funk to the ring, carrying a Haliburton briefcase. Before the match, Funk deposits the title belt in the briefcase and Studd locks it for safekeeping! During the match, several WCCW oficials try to confiscate the belt from Studd, but he refuses to open the briefcase! Funk wins the match via the spinning toehold.
5/6/88: The Killer Bees win a three team round robin tournament over the New Breed and the Guerrero Brothers to determine who gets a title match against Kabuki & Missing Link next week. 5/13/88: At the top of the program, Bill Mercer says he has great news for the fans and friends of Kerry & Kevin Von Erich! The tape is shown of the Von Erich boys winning the WWF Tag Team Titles on the 5/6/88 edition of Saturday Night's Main Event. Afterwards, a video is shown of Kerry & Kevin in their dressing room afterwards. They say that the WWF has given them special permission to be at the Parade of Champions on May 28th to defend their newly won titles! They say they will take on any worthy challengers!
Chavo & Hector Guerrero score a convincing win over Jerry Allen & Joe Savoldi. In a post match interview with Mark Lowrance, the Guerreros say that ever since they came to WCCW, all they have heard from fans was how great Kerry & Kevin are and they are sick of it! They challenge the Von Erichs for the Parade of Champions. Chavo says they will win the WWF Tag Titles and go to New York to defend them and the fans around here can have their precious Von Erichs back!
A music video set to “Hysteria” by Def Leppard is shown that focuses on the wrestlers in the American Title tournament tomorrow at HemisFair Arena in San Antonio. Mark Lowrance interviews Al Perez & Gary Hart. Lowrance points out that he didn't see Perez in the preceding video. Hart says that the powers that be don't want Perez as champion, but Al will be a champion! Hart says that he has signed for Perez to wrestle Steve Simpson for the Texas Title on the card in San Antonio! Al Perez then wrestles Manny Vialobos and scores a convincing win.
Fabulous Blondes Eric Embry, Ken Timbs, & Buddy Roberts(w/ Doug Somers) take on Chris & Mark Youngblood & Shaun Simpson. The Blondes win primarily due to Somers interfering. After the match, Steve Simpson & Lance Von Erich come to ringside and say that next week, they'll have a surprise fro the Blondes! Buddy Roberts says the Blondes have a surprise of their own. They show a video of “Mr. Magnificent” Kevin Kelly posing and flexing. Kelly says that he is the newest Fabulous Blonde! A video is hown of the Snowman and his Kryptonite box. Snowman says that he will take on Tony Atlas in an arm wrestling match at HemisFair Arena tomorrow night and he might just unleash Kryptonite!
The Missing Link & Kabuki (w/Gary Hart) defend the American Tag Team Titles against the Killer Bees! The Bees use their “mask confusion” strategy(which Bill Mercer marks out for) for the first time in World Class and it leads to Kabuki being pinned and the Bees winning the American Tag Team Titles! After the match, Hart & Kabuki blame the Link for the loss of the title for some reason! Link stands up to Hart and Kabuki spews the green mist into Link's eyes! Kabuki, Hart, & Al Perez beat the Link down until Ron Garvin charges in for the save! Afterwards, Garvin leaves the ring with Link following him like a lost puppy!
